I was born in 1980. I had an Atari 2600. Got it around 1986. A friend in in 1987 had a 5200. I remember being in awe of the graphics for Ms. Pac-Man with the cut scenes. @ginormousaurus83943 жыл бұрын
Gremlins was reportedly produced in 1984, but was shelved because the Atari 5200 was discontinued. The Gremlins cartridges sat in a warehouse for a couple of years before Atari decided to clear out the stock and release them for sale. It's too bad, because the 5200 version of Gremlins looks like an interesting game for its time. It makes me wonder what might have been if there were more innovative games for the 5200 instead of rehashes of Atari 2600 releases.

@@bast01 the detail is that you notice that it is inferior, the Atari despite being a less new console and that handles fewer pixels on the screen exceeds Nes in 2.5D games, this gives us to understand that in many aspects the consoles did not surpass 8-bit computers in their entirety, they stand out in many aspects.

Great video! I started slightly after this with the Nes in 1985 and Sega Master System in 1986. Even though I was really young and very casual, I always liked video games. It wasn't until 1989 that I truly became a diehard gamer with the Sega Genesis. That Christmas changed me in a big way. I continued onward and got an Snes in 1991 and Sega CD in 1992. I have never stopped and I won't ever look back. My only issue with this machine Atari 5200 is the sound. My God, it's the single most unpleasant thing I have ever heard. I'd love an Atari 5200 Mini. That's an under appreciated console. There are some amazing arcade ports on the 5200. Centipede, Moon Patrol, Berzerk & Robotron 2084 to name a few. It would also give Atari a chance to redeem themselves by actually making the controller work well.

I read Atari got the price down for the 2600 and after selling 10 million through 1981, sold 2-5 million more 2600 Consoles in 1982-3, mainly through Pac-Man Fever and its port. This was just before ColecoVision and the 5200 launched so the 2600 actually hurt sales of both, though it captured 70% market share. Maybe if someone else got exclusive rights to Pac-Man?

@ginormousaurus83943 жыл бұрын
Reasons why the Atari 5200 failed: -Poor controller. -Pack-in game Super Breakout failed to show off the console's capabilities. -Initial 5200 model was unable to play Atari 2600 games. -Lack of original games. Most 5200 games were rehashes of games that had been released on other systems. -The 5200 had to compete in a crowded market against the Atari 2600, Odyssey 2, Intellivision, ColecoVision, Vectrex, and home computers. -The 5200 was more expensive than the ColecoVision, which also launched in 1982.
@daviniarobbins92983 жыл бұрын
I think the problem with the 5200(apart from the awful joysticks that is) is that it wasn't backwards compatible with 2600 games(well not without an adapter or something). What Atari should have done was make it backwards compatible and faded out production of 2600 consoles. Instead they diluted the market with two consoles. At least Commodore withdrew the Vic-20 computer when the 64 was released.
@JohnyTheWizKid2 жыл бұрын
Have you checked out Angry Video game nerd's episode on this console? I think it wasn't explored well but that was back in 2007 before we could modify them.
@sandal_thong86312 жыл бұрын
Wrong. The SNES didn't fail because you couldn't play NES games! Every sale of the 2600 adapter for ColecoVision was the loss of at least one game sale, plus money spent on any 2600 games for it. Atari should have retired the 2600 in January 1982, and launched the 5200 with Pac-Man. Pac-Man Fever would have sold the console. I don't know that that's correct about the VIC-20 either. I never got the idea that it wasn't supported just because the C-64 was on the market. I still bought cartridges and game magazines and games on tape.

NO WAY! The SNES didn't play NES games and that did just fine. People wanted the better SNES when it came out to play its games. Atari sabotaged its own system by releasing Pac-Man in 1982 for the 2600 before its 5200 was launched. Had they retired it after Christmas 1981 and released Pac-Man only on the 5200 then the Crash of 1983 might not have happened. Instead they sold 2-5 million more 2600s, and disappointment and oversaturation killed the console market that the 2600 had 70% share of, so they released no new 2600 games in 1985!
