In 1990, Ice-T released a song called “You Played Yourself,” in which each verse is devoted to a cautionary tale of the phenomenon. A rapper boasts about his money to make himself seem richer, and then his fans see through it and abandon him, leaving him broke. A man thinks that he can buy his date’s affections; she empties his pockets and disconnects her phone. In the two-line chorus, over a James Brown sample, Ice-T spits, contemptuously, “You played yourself / Yo, yo, you played yourself.”

Just because you can't explain an occurrence, it doesn't mean that supernatural elements are behind it. You are not very intellectually curious, are you? It's just easier to let others think for you. @Jim Merrilees Well, in theory you can have lots of evidence that don’t exclusively point to one conclusion each taken individually, but collectively point exclusively or almost exclusively to one thing. This is priceless........... The Presbyterian church called a meeting to decide what to do about their squirrel infestation. After much prayer and consideration, they concluded that the squirrels were predestined to be there, and they should not interfere with God’s divine will. At the Baptist church, the squirrels had taken an interest in the baptistry. The deacons met and decided to put a water-slide on the baptistry and let the squirrels drown themselves. The squirrels liked the slide and, unfortunately, knew instinctively how to swim, so twice as many squirrels showed up the following week. The Lutheran church decided that they were not in a position to harm any of God’s creatures. So, they humanely trapped their squirrels and set them free near the Baptist church. Two weeks later, the squirrels were back when the Baptists took down the water-slide. The Episcopalians tried a much more unique path by setting out pans of whiskey around their church in an effort to kill the squirrels with alcohol poisoning. They sadly learned how much damage a band of drunk squirrels can do. But the Catholic church came up with a more creative strategy! They baptized all the squirrels and made them members of the church. Now they only see them at Christmas and Easter. Not much was heard from the Jewish synagogue. They took the first squirrel and circumcised him. They haven’t seen a squirrel since.

@@jackvalance3775 We are not skeptical of our claim of skepticism ? I mean, if we’re honest when we say we’re skeptical of something, then there isn’t much reason to be skeptical of the fact that we are skeptical, is there ? In theory I suppose it’s still possible that subconsciously we don’t want it to be true which biases us against evidence that there is a god, but 1) that’s why we’re trying our best to be proper skeptics, meaning having a clear and consistent methodology that we can apply equally, 2) it’d have to be proven that we’re biased in such a manner. Also, theists aren’t burdened with our claims, you’re burdened with your claim that god exists, and you have to prove it just like within theism Christians have to demonstrate the Christian god to the non christian, Hindus have to demonstrate their god/gods to non Hindus, etc.

@@dyvel you say it, NON-......... it´s not the same in regards to athe-ism. The definition of "ism" is like I said. I´m a atheist and I believe there is not enough evidence for a god, therefore I reject his existence. It does, per definition, not play a role that atheism is tied to theism. If Matt thinks that way, ok, me not. I think that he want avoid the discussion if atheism is a religion or not, because it´s a whole different topic. Wow, it's so weird to me being from Canada, especially from South-eastern, ON, where we have four definite seasons that can swing from almost 40 celsius with the humidex (which I HATE) in the summer, to so-cold-your-face-freezes in winter, or snows until you can't find your car. I don't mind the snow that much. But I can't imagine not having to get ready for each season. We have to put away each season's clothes and accessories and take out the next. Snow tires go on, or summer tires. Anti-freeze, all our outdoor clothes have to come out of downstairs dressers and trunks, summer clothes come out. Wow, my Mum worked her ass off at that living in a 100+ year-old house and 5 kids, no closets in those old houses, we had tons of dressers and trunks tucked everywhere. We're always getting ready for the next season. Lawn furniture comes out, snow shovels put away....kind of a pain now that I think about it. But I LOVE it at the same time. Snow at Christmas, I love it. Christmas against the snow and big flakes coming down. Wow.

@Jim Merrilees kind of begs the question, an atheist isn't going to claim a spiritual encounter, they would have a different view. I can speak to both sides on this. I grew up in the church, and understand first hand the compelling narrative of the spiritual experience. I now understand that experience to be explained materially. But at the time, in the middle of it, no rational argument could break through that emotional barrier.

If I hear the words, “I had an experience,” one more time, I’m going to spew. Dreams result from what is on your mind a lot. Miracles are the incredible amazing coincidences that the world has a habit of throwing up constantly. One important prayer that has been answered cuts no ice up against the thousands of prayers that believers make, that were not answered. Any other so-called experiences also come under the banner of coincidences. How people can fall for those things is totally beyond me.
