HEΛRTS OF SPΛCE prank or not, his logic was about as sound as every serious caller. They all call in with some argument, which they feel uses rationality to stump the host's rationality. Usually, you can tell that they feel that their argument is some profound epiphany, when really, it's been heard a million times, like Pascal's wager, attempts to reverse burden of proof, or arguing, "how do you know your rationality isn't fallible, without faith?". When these arguments fail they'll either be too confused to realize it, or they'll argue in circles for a bit. When they finally give up their argument, they either resort to, "I know, because the bible tells me so.", or, "I know, because I've had a personal revelation from god." That's literally how almost every Christian argument I've heard has ended, and I've watched way too many of these episodes. On the rare occasion that the host asks them what their personal revelation from god was, it

HEΛRTS OF SPΛCE (accidentally bumped the send button early) Their personal revelation is usually something unremarkable. One I remember was a lady saying she didn't believe in god, but she was sick, and, in an act of desperation, turned to prayer. Then, over the course of several years, she got better. It's a miracle! Another caller said her personal sign from god happened when she was in her basement. She was moving a shelf, and a bible, which her mother or grandmother had given her, fell out from behind the shelf. She said it was a miracle and sign from god, because she has no idea what compelled her to move the shelf, and she hadn't seen that bible for many years. Anyway, my point is, at least this prank caller gets straight to the point of saying, "It's in the bible, so it must be true." He sounds no dumber than many of the callers who argue against evolution, or those who try to use the bits and pieces of the bible that they memorized specifically for the show, only to be stomped by Matt's bible knowledge

My grandpa died from an allergic reaction to a vaccine (back in the early 80s or mid 70s, before I was born) and not only that, I fall in the autism spectrum and have been vaccinated....so what? Vaccines have saved countless lives and there is no causation/correlation link to me being in the spectrum, as for my gramps? Well it sucks, I would really have liked to have known him, but it was an unfortunate-yet-rare occurrence. Being mad at a vaccines won't bring him back.

my 12 year old daughter is severely autistic. She doesn't speak or has never used the toilet. I do suspect the shots have something to do with it because I hear the same story over and over from other parents at her school as with her that she started developing at a normal age and even talking but everything stopped around 2 years old right after getting the shots you get as a young child. I suspect that maybe because it saves so many lives and enormous amount of lawsuits that would follow that maybe they hide it but I actually feel the same way as you when I think of all the people that do not die every year from getting them shots I guess you have to look at the greater good

Sorry, as a confirmed Catholic, I can tell you that it is the parent's decision. I went through the motions, and answered all the priest's questions as I had been taught to, and never questioned that I should succeed in being confirmed because my parents wanted that. The church makes a pretense of caring about whether your acceptance is your own choice, but it is bullshit.

I type this in 2024, but it’s just as valid. As a confirmed Spanish Catholic who left religion right after confirmation, I can tell that in our schools all the students that reached the age of 14 were confirmed to follow the customs. No need for interrogations or parent’s permission. Of course, that happened in 1975, the last year of Franco’s dictatorship, and only those that really wish to be confirmed do so these days.

Around 29:40 I would have pointed out that there's no such thing as 'violation' of Occam's Razor. It's a probabilistic tool, not even a descriptive one. Occam's Razor isn't a law of anything, it simply states that the most elegant and naturally uncomplicated (often erroneously changed to 'simple') hypothesis to explain something is generally worth examination first, as it has the best chance of containing some portion of the truth or at least will provide the greatest quantity of useful data for updating the potential answer space if it turns out to be entirely false. Occam's Razor is a tool for promoting untested hypothesis on the basis of possibility drawn from prior knowledge and evidence, it has absolutely no ruling power over whether a known quantity is or is not 'in line' with it. So yeah, Occam's Razor is a tool that you can either use or not use, but you can't 'violate' it as if it was a law.

Although I have never believed in a god I have been forced to go through a church system. Including certain ceremonies such as the confirmation which my family decided for me. I went to classes but never met with a priest that judged 'whether I would truly commit to the faith' or not. Rather, they just accepted anyone (everyone) in the class who could remember what was taught and their lines during the ceremony. I, personally, never submitted to this. Rather, it was a choice forced upon me which I continuously tried to get out of, up until the point of the actual ceremony. My family was aware that I never held their beliefs, that I've disagreed with them since they were introduced to me and often disputed them with other religions I would read about, and tried to force me on the path of their religion anyway. So there are some situations where it is 'the choice of the parent'.

@Zentz29 Whether or not people are held accountable for their speech is irrelevant to this discussion. I never claimed people aren`t held accountable. I said they shouldnt be held accountable. You are ultimately responsible for yourself. You are responsible for your emotions/feelings and how you react to or deal with them. Even if someone evokes emotions from you, even if they present you with false information it is your choice how you react and what you believe and investigate as a result.

@xxFortunadoxx Actually, that example does not disconfirm my claim. For it is possible though undesirable and unlikely for an individual NOT to obey despite the threat of and use of violence against them. That being said, we can understand and empathize with individuals who are coerced with violence into committing violence. A threat of violence is not 'words alone' for the will to use that violence is presented in the words and thus creates a violent, amoral situation/environment.

I have to disagree with Jen about confirmation. I was confirmed as a Catholic at 12, as were all my Catholic friends - it was not really our decision, and I never saw a priest decide any kid was not ready. It is just one more religious ritual you are forced to go through. You are told it's your choice, but I would love to see what happens to the kid who says no. Don't kid yourself, maybe YOU had a choice, but for the most part the idea that it is a free choice is just another religious lie.

@xxFortunadoxx But in this case, the person is not holding a gun or using the threat of violence. They cannot be held liable for spreading the misinformation. It is the responsibility of individuals to seek out the legitimate medical experts and become informed to make an informed decision. Whether or not they can be held legally responsible is irrelevant. I said they SHOULDN`T be held liable for their their words/writing. They are NOT forcing or threatening to use force on others.

There exists no limit to freedom of speech. Even if I die, my words may remain in writing. You cannot hold someone responsible for their words that others act upon same as you cannot hold a book responsible. It would serve no purpose even if your purpose is censorship. @vegetta00 The fact that you can choose not to obey a command despite the threat of violence against them is irrelevant. The fact is is that it happens once is all that is needed. If it were even the case that one time words were used to force a person to act or that the person believed that he was being forced, your claim is wrong. A threat of violence can be entirely toothless without any ramifications. Like threatening to shoot someone if they don't do something and not even having a gun.

@Zentz29 Actually, in the case of Hitler. He did much more than just speak words. That was actually a bad example on your part but I understood what you were trying to say. Hitler aside. Millions of people have died b/c there were those that 'chose' to follow the orders of others. But as we have already determined, "just following orders" is not an excuse. Those orders mean nothing without the will of others to follow them. The commands by a few did not FORCE others to act.

I was under the impression that almonds were notable for cyanide content, not arsenic. True that the preservatives, at those levels are virtually harmless. Though some are now saying that vaccines can cause an immune over-reaction in some cases, especially if multiple vaccines are taken in a short time frame.

@vegetta00 so you will not agree, that people can incite hatred or convince others through wordplay? You did not address any of the examples i set forth, please do. Until then I can't really see any more value in this discussion.

Sorry, Matt. But you should not be held responsible for spreading false or dangerous information. It may be morally wrong, but ultimately you are not initiating for upon anyone. Ultimately, responsibility lies with those who make the choice.

Well sure it's genetic, but having a child with an autoimmune disease that's genetic doesn't ensure passing on that disease. For instance, my family on my father's side has a history of diabetes type 1, but I don't have it. Insulin allows those who suffer from Type 1 diabetes to live more comfortable lives. so I must ask...what's the problem?

@Zentz29 To speak is an action, but not an action of force that can push someone over an edge or pull them towards you. The sound of a voice alone cannot cause death to another. I don`t know if I would hold someone responsible for the death of another simply for offering someone else to commit that murder. But I do know that the action of that murderer is where the responsibility ultimately lies. You seem to have no concept of the principle lf self-ownership. I recommend studying.

I might have worded that in a confusing manner; The incidence of autoimmune type I diabetes mellitus has increased because it is genetic, and since insulin has become available, it has allowed people that have the genetic predisposition to have children; previously, the complications of the diabetes reduced reproductive fitness of the individuals who had type I and therefore they did not have as many children.

Why can't you be a nihilist while decreeing the superiority of secular morality? The metrics by which we can gauge the results of things like secular morality are objective, but that doesn't make the precepts themselves objective. Nihilism and moral superiority aren't mutually exclusive ideas.

@TheMightyPatapon Where did I object to vaccinations in any general sense? Matt said we could avoid what he called suffering from chicken pox. The problem becomes whether not there is a danger to not being vaccinated against chicken pox, which is an individual decision to be made and there is no danger to most children in the appropriate age range, otherwise, a week off of school and some Calamine Lotion is not dangerous.

It makes perfect sense to me that children are old enough to be proclaim their faith but too young to think for themselves. Because theism is childish and has nothing to do with thinking for yourself.

@xxFortunadoxx (Cont`d) Furthermore, the burden of proof lies in the positive statement. How am I liable for the actions taken by another if I myself took no action but rather merely spoke/wrote words? Is it possible to hold someone liable if they are dead, and what if my words were in writing? Can you hold a book liable?

@Silentsam7532 Nihilism is merely the rejection of objective morality. Subjective morality clearly exists. The question then becomes moral relativism or moral superiority. Based on the template provided by philosophers like Sam Harris its simple to do a cost-benefit analysis on specific ideas considered "moral" ideas and determine which have a greater effect on overall societal health. This doesn't make morality any less subjective. I'm a nihilist and believe my morals are superior.

About the First Amendment... Congress shall make no law respecting an establishment of religion, or prohibiting the free exercise thereof; or abridging the freedom of speech, or of the press; or the right of the people peaceably to assemble, and to petition the Government for a redress of grievances. It only applies to the government making laws against these things. It has nothing to do with someone calling you an idiot for saying idiotic things.
