In this video, we go into detail as to why the auction price of a collectible does NOT equal the market price. Case study on a(n) 1885-CC Morgan Dollar Coin graded by PCGS in MS 66+ CAC stickered, is also provided...

Not saying I do it perfectly in my own estimations on my collectibles but, it made sense to never just note the highest paid price/recent price and instead go for an average in between a certain number of sales to find a estimated price I could expect for my own stuff. Glad to know I am at least thinking about it correctly in some way, also that appearance on karl's video was wonderful and goes to show no matter where you appear you are consistent always with your messages you try to pass on to others. Thanks

It is actually amazing how accurate this video is. You would think people spending thousands (or more) in the collectibles world would know this - that this would be common sense. Far from it, I’m afraid. Great video as usual!

Money is relative at the end of the day. Someone whose worth a few million might not do the research compared to the average person watching this video. Before dropping a few thousand on a collectible.

Sean, I had been a skeptic of your content in different veins throughout the year. I sometimes viewed you as overly pessimistic and focused on negatives. After watching Karl video, I took a spoonful of humble soup. Luckily I never invested in graded games. Your takes on lack of pop report was dead on. Manipulation dead on. All this gold free of charge. A true head bow to you.

I'm actually surprised you didn't cover hammer price vs. price with buyers premium vs. price to seller. That $4,800 had a $1,200 buyers premium on it with a hammer price of $3,600, meaning the seller got somewhere around $2,880... which means your purchase could have been cheaper if done through a private sale . I would also say that established/stable markets are okay to average, but you shouldn't average when markets swing up or down. I see lots of comments about something being a high or low anomaly as a one off, and at that point one can speculate on the swing being up or down, but a good example would be looking at the Banksy signed and unsigned print market over the past 18 months.

I love the idea of an aggregate value, and I try to use a similar position when I value items I want to add to my collection. There’s a lot of online databases that are over valuing, and I’d argue sometimes those same ones under value some, as well. I would love to get a better understanding of rarity of these newer pop culture collectibles that most of my collection is made up of and would love to have something similar to a population report for how many were sold.

My method for gaging price is to take the most recent sales and subtract the top and bottom 10% and then average the rest out. Only problem is when you're dealing with something that is genuinely rare and highly sought after, then you know you're going to likely go above what the market might suggest. Possibly paying a record setting price for that particular collectible.

As always i agree. Only thing is, if an item is overvalued like 1000 dollars on 3500 i think is anyway a great evaluation. I mean, if a x product worths 4000 and estimate now for the timmy point is 5000 well...is ok. I mean the value is there. Biggest problem is that if that item values for the market now 3000 (which is crazy) and i paid 50 3 years ago...that is the nonsense. Correct me if i'm wrong, but the point is that the delta is too huge nowadays from the real price and the actual "market" value

Great information as always. Personally, I am not buying anything in this market. I believe that coin prices are in a bubble. Whoever paid $4,800 + for that coin is either crazy or playing the grading game. Probably thinks they can get it re-graded at 67 and CAC it again. Thanks!

IMO if you are a collector and you buy to keep, pay what you want, but don't pay more just because you think you should. When you acquire something just by clicking a button, overpaying will rarely feel satisfying further down the road.

I’m not triggered by this video. I know from experience that getting the highest price for an item every time is easier said than done. It’s possible if you can afford to be patient but even then it’s not guaranteed. If a person insists on using highest recorded sold prices as a way to value their collection then they could at least qualify the statement by say something like “at auction this item/collection could potentially fetch upwards of .....”

This is FACTS!! It makes no sense the last auction price is the person who wants it THE MOST so there for they paid HIGHER than anyone else was WILLING to! So how is that the new price?? I look at Buy It Now prices and see how much MANY people are paying for an item that is closer to the market price. Not the person who HAS to have it and will pay the most for it.

Why in the heck are you looking to put money into CC, or any for that matter, Morgan dollars? You're smarter than this. Have you not been paying attention to the numismatic market?
@WondyCoin
@WondyCoin 2 жыл бұрын
I mean, seriously, the very fact you were so easily able to find another doesn't tell you something? It's just not rare. You Morgan Maniacs are crazy, and you're totally missing out on a lot of coins which are just as eye-appealing, just as collectible, MUCH more rare, and can be had for less money, if you take the time to actually find them.
@Ontario100

I agree, $3,600 is still too much. An 85-CC 66+ with a CAC sticker sold at Legend in May for less than $2,500. I will wait for prices to come back to earth and yes there are very nice and much rarer coins out there.

Probably we all try to get a good price, but as a collector my favorite holding period is forever. It’s nice to be in sufficiently liquid collectibles that my children will easily be able to sell them. High grade Morgan dollars are a little hard to understand price wise, but as a collector I don’t care that much. A 63 or a 64 will be just fine for me. Maybe I’ll buy a few of them if the ratio is 10 63s to one 67, buy something else with the rest of the money.
