Whenever I see this video, I feel like he is actually forgiving his parents for making his childhood so hard. I think his dad thought so too. It's a really great performance full of heart and reminds me of Ella Henderson (?) taking Cher's song "Believe" and making people notice the lyrics in the best way possible. Except they knew they had a packageable talent in her and James was no Harry Styles in the obvious cachet department. Good for James.

My favorite books as a kid were "The Great Brain" and "Me and My Little Brain" by John D. Fitzgerald. They are about two brothers and set in about 1895 in Utah. I found one of them in a used bookstore 10 years ago. I had to laugh when I saw on the first page that their last resort go-to pass-time as Catholics was "whipping Mormon kids". In Utah. I think this is a very disingenuous audition and you got played a bit by the producers. Real bullying wouldn't have already stopped by the time that the short kid got on a talent show. Simon and them were just looking for their next cute boys to hawk to the little girls.

Almost All acts are not auditions. Scouts recruit from KZbin and word of mouth. Producers then ask them to be on show. Many Simon has seen on other shows he hosted prior to got talent. Totally lacking if you don't have Jonathan and Charlotte. Their UK audition combined with the international versions makes it the most viewed audition ever. Charlotte is now a successful actress in musical theater at the West End in London which was her dream! And Jonathan just released his 7th album (5th solo), plus he tours the world. He totally rocked an audience of 30 thousand at "Carols in the Domain" in Sydney, Australia last December with his rendition of "Oh Holy Night."

Actually, the only One Direction member who gave a good audition was Liam Payne, and I was surprised that they all made it through, but I'm very happy that the judges (mostly Simon) saw their potential because I sure grew to love their music. So sorry for the loss of Liam in October of this year ( 2024). He will be missed very much.

This show birthed 3 of my favorite singers. I am a massive fan of James Arthur and Olly Muirs. They are unbelievable. James' voice is so beautiful and raw. Olly is a great singer and performer. They definitely got that statement correct and he hasn't changed one bit. I also loved One Direction. When they separated I really watched and supported Harry Styles. He has an amazing voice. I'd say the golden voice of 1D after he had vocal coaching. I just love these 3 guys. Enormous talents for sure ❤

Generally speaking, most child stars struggle with mental health hence looking for an escape in addiction. Even if he made it on his own, I believe his fate wouldn't be much different. In the band, he had other guys at least so the understanding for the burden was there. Have a look at some of the most famous child stars and where are they now and you will see a clear pattern. Stardom is not for kids without adequate support. The biggest issue is people working within the showbiz don't see them as kids/teens but rather piggy banks and money makers.
