Robert Caro has spent the last 40 years writing a five volume series about President Lyndon Johnson. He's been working on the fifth and final volume for over a decade. I set out to try to figure out when the fifth book will be released.

I am in the last couple hundred pages of Power Broker. I started it less than a month ago and cannot wait to dig into it every day. Absolute monument of literature. And 99% Invisible is doing one podcast a month through 2024 on the book.

Thank you. And yes leave Mr Caro alone :) These books are masterpieces and will be referenced 200 years from now ( if someone wants to know what the Senate was like in the 1950s for example). But although they are serious books, when you read about about LBJ's personal habits (eating, smoking, scratching, adjusting, toilet, naming his member) I dare anyone to not bust out laughing!

I've read the four books on LBJ. My favourite is Master of the Senate. I've read it twice. Currently reading The Power Broker. I understand 350,000 words were cut out due to the size of the paperback. Does anyone know if the 350K words are available somewhere to read? Thanks. Best biographies, Truman by David McCullough. Eisenhower Soldier and President by Stephen Ambrose.

Well, I don't know if it was life changing but, the biography of Grant, "Grant" by McFeely provided me with a resonate hero. I did also read the "Memoirs" the original best seller, and a real best seller of the times. Grant was a national hero for many people, and he is as well for myself. I have worked on Transcendia for 40 years, or since 1978 to the point of inventing Political Engineering as opposed to Political Science. It will take serious Political Engineering for humanity as a civilization world wide to advance and survive. One day I read of space ships gone from the solar system and the next ruptures of the food chain as the Chinese catch all the fish from one fishery to the next which is moving towards an end to fish to eat.

@@deanpeterson_ How so? Grants' way of writing orders out according to the situation on the battlefield as it existed, without wasting time on searching for blame, impressed me and was something I moved to confirm whenever I was in a position of giving orders. "Be co-operative with the co-operative, and just tell the uncooperative what to do." Figuring out how not to do things is how many people approach their jobs and lives. "We are not here to figure out how Not to do it." -Captain James Boy Pilot President of Florida Aircraft Leasing. When the quote was printed out nicely for his desk it came back as "We are here to figure out how not to do it." You must question people about how they have read what you wrote. Reading comprehension is not great.

For the sake of the algorithm, I'll be honest - I found Path to Power a bit overwritten and couldn't go on (long passages about grass waving, stuff like that). I don't ask you to defend it though, as I know I am on the wrong side of history. Per your prompt, at first I was gonna say "The Politician" by John Edwards' lackey Andrew Young, but "The New New Thing" is so so good, I'll stick with it.

His writing is enthralling and thoroughly researched. I read path to power, means of ascent and am 90% through master of the Senate. I truly hope we get the 5th volume finished.

Robert Cairo isn't writing about Lyndon Johnson.. If you knew anything about Robert Cairo and his writing, you would know that he is using the life of Lyndon Johnson to highlight power, specifically national power. Within the series of books he writes about several historical figures of that time, not just Lyndon Johnson.

Exactly, it’s the “Years of Lyndon Johnson.” It’s a kaleidoscope of the 40’s, 50’s, and 60’s through the lens of Lyndon Johnson. It’s amazing how many moments of history and imposing figures Johnson brushed shoulders with. In the house during the The Great Depression and World War II (although his involvement is tenuous) and a prominent role in the Civil Rights Movement, the Cuban Missile Crisis, the Kennedy Assassination, and so much more. It really is the life and times of the man, equally a biography of Johnson as it is a study of the culture when he was serving in office.

He´s interested in political power thats why he wrote about Robert Moses. And LBJ is an even better example of explaining how power works in a democracy. He´s not interested in narrating the life of famous people or politicians. Its about power.
@beachmom2001

@@firgasz2920 Exactly! He used the life of Robert Moses to highlight urban power, power on a city level. He is using the life of Lyndon Johnson to highlight national power. He has someone in mind to highlight world power but because hes superstitious he doesn't want to mention who it is.

Don’t listen to the leave him alone crowd. Mr Caro is perhaps intentionally stalling to complete this like George Martin and Game of Thrones. The world can’t wait anymore. Please go back to his home and wait him out and encourage him to finish. He will be happy to hear from a fan. You will not be pepper sprayed or dragged away for stalking either.
