@@shonenbois yeah ik. It definitely didnt hit me hard, the first time was so shocking. I had a feeling he was gonna die all along since episode 1, but I didnt expect it to be then, so sudden. I expected Dio to do it. I think replacing Avdols return with Hol Horse woukdve worked much better. Either that or replacing Kakyoins death with Avdol, cz at the beginning he feared Dio but his final moments would be him showing What Dios power really was and overcoming his fear Smthn I kinda hate is when multiole characters in a show escape all kinds of danger which appear Impossible only to die at the end, as if the writer was saving their deaths to when they've fulfilled their uses. However, at the same time I like it cz we spend as much possible time with these characters.

I actually really like the vanilla ice death, but it was certainly harmed by it being his 2nd death. Just watching someone vanish from existence was so unlike any other death in Jojo so when it happened it was unbelievable that he was dead. It wasn’t until and episode or two later as the fight continued and avdols death truly sunk in

Poolturtle thing was that Iggy already had the role to die mid battle. Avdol dying at the mid too would have not had the same effect it did with the fear factor from the start. It might have been cool to see at least some action before he died, but the way it played out wasn't bad to begin with. Just unfortunate that Avdol already went through the dying and also reviving process before, which was weird enough for the most part.

I agree. I remember when Avdol was brought back, and Polnareff was all happy and joyful (as was I), and then the other members of the group were like "duh, ofc he was alive. You're such an idiot." I felt so offended lol. Like.. NO! it was not obvious because no one ever mentioned him again after his "death". And poor Pol has been psychologically torturing himself for a long time, adding the guilt of him losing his younger sister too, having suicidal thoughts, letting himself being devored alive because he just couldn't keep living with his guilt anymore 😭 and the group never ever told him that Avdol was alive? Despite them knowing how depressed and guilted Polnareff felt??!! Unacceptable. I was so angry at all of them. You just don't disregard psychological issues, Araki! 😭😭😭🔪🔪🔪

The ONLY time I've seen a character death "fake out" work well was "Full Metal Alchemist". Every other series failed horribly. What makes Avdol's situation worse is that he died, just to die again. Killing Polnareff instead of Avdol against Vanilla Ice would have been way better, because I feel like watching Polnareff die after surviving so many times before would have made a greater impact than Avdol dying. Honestly, I have a way bigger problem with another crusader, that being Kakyoin. I don't find him interesting at all, because I feel like I din't even got to know him. All he did way stay in the background, and I feel like Araki intended to make him stoic like Jotaro, but it just didn't work , in the case of Jotaro we got to know him well and how he thinks, and he gets in action a lot of times, while kakyoin just appeared, fought Jotaro, fought some 2 guys and disappeared for half of the series in a super unsatisfying way. I guess Araki wanted to give a sense of danger by one of the crusaders being taken down by the first Egyptian God, but choose to trow kakyoin away, when we didn't even got to know his personality, motivations and even how he felt. And the flashback at the Dio fight just made me lose it, it felt like a last minute excuse of a character because Araki forgot to actually make kakyoin a character

I feel like the story would have taken a very interesting turn if Avdol died in the Hol Horse fight. As you said, Pol and Joseph are the comedic relief and Jotaro and Kakyoin are very serious. With Avdol gone, these sides would have likely crashed and caused rifts between all the crusaders. Maybe it would be through personality differences or how they dealt with the enemies or even disagreements on how to finish off Dio. This might cause them to break up and go their own separate ways and have their own character development independent of each other, which culminates in the ending fight with Dio, where they go back to working together and finish him off.

@@guildmasterri5995 You understand that a review is a subjective interpretation of a piece of media, right? I'm free to respond to it in literally any way I want. If those videos were an objective analysis then I'd understand your problem but reviews are a personal response to the stimulus presented. And here's something very important: Just because an idea is well fleshed out, does not necessarily make it interesting. I understand the widespread motif of fate. Does that mean I have to like how it's implemented or reject how I felt in response to a particular part? Absolutely not. That's a review.

@@NewWorldReview I get that thing but you should still do some research before making videos like this, there are a lot scenes which were anime only like narancia death flag wasn't as big, fugo disappeared because of a reason which got covered in interview and purple haze feedback was made after that, I don't have problem with your review but some of your details are wrong like stardust crusaders wasn't long in manga, david production stretched it way too much and made it boring.

@@guildmasterri5995 You're still missing the point of a review. My opinion should be based on what I saw and nothing more. I should not need to research or dive into extended media to form a response to how I felt to the original piece. Once again, for a more analysis based discussion then yes, yes I would. However those videos were subjective reviews that do not require such a thing. And as for Stardust Crusaders being long, it was 152 chapters. That is an incredibly long time to tell such a simple story and quite frankly, the fact that it was all able to be condensed into 48 episodes is miraculous and very well paced. It's the actual content of Part 3 that makes it feel dragged out.

It seems like I have a slightly different take on Avdol’s death. Sure for a while I was sad, it was surprising that Avdol was out the game so soon, but this being jojo I fully expect he might come back. Same with Stroheim, dude blew up and still cane back. Of course then knowing that Avdol came back once I kind hoped that kakyoin might come back too, and when he didn’t it hurts way more. Idk if it was intentional but damn if it was Araki is a genius.

I think the one good thing that came with Avdols "resurrection" was the fact that Polnateff had to live through losing him TWICE. The context of this tragedy really amplified the power of Cream introduction, making it one of the most intense scenes in jojo for me.

I thought Avdol's deaths fed more into the post-modern/post-structuralist side of JoJo and was kind of a meta commentary on the resurrection trope. I do think it's weird that almost as soon as Avdol comes back, Kakyoin gets knocked out of the narrative for most of Egypt, as if Araki can only deal with so many Crusaders at a time.

I think that the point behind Avdol's actual death was shock value first of all, like "Oh he can't be dead again" but then you slowly realize that he IS dead. Not only that but he was killed by an incredibly powerful stand, Cream. It's also mainly a set up for how dangerous Vanilla Ice is.

In defense of Buffy, when she is resurrected, the entirety of season 6 has her dealing with the weird sort of PTSD of being ripped out of heaven (and peace). She does rash things like alienate friends and hook up with spike (who unlike angel had no soul and was by contrast still evil). There was so much more narrative follow through with her resurrection.

I also kinda feel the same way as the thoughts you present in this video, but I do have a counter argument. The blank confused shocked feeling we get when Avdol dies a second time, caused by the abrupt nature of his death, and the fact that he “died” before, puts us in the same shoes as Polnareff narratively. We can’t believe that would just happen. We’re confused and it scares us, just like Polnareff in that situation. At least that’s my 2 cents

Personally I found the way that Avdol kinda just vanished really unsettling. The way he just disappears without a proper send off was existentially horrifying. One moment he’s with hanging out with Polnareff and the next he’s gone forever. I don’t think every character send off has to involve a full funeral procession and military honors. I think the horror of Avdols death builds up a sense of danger while Joseph, Jotaro, and Kakoyin play video games downstairs. The Cream fight is probably the most high stakes fight in the series. It killed the most crusaders out of any fight and left polareff within an inch of his life. Defeating Vanilla Ice seemed more out of reach than defeating Dio ever did.

Nice review, Avdol is my fav of the crusaders, and I mostly agree with you, but a point I think you missed is that Avdol is very important to introduce Iggy, also being the only local from Egypt when the crusaders arrive there, but both points could have been developed better with more focus on him, instead Avdol is mostly a development tool for Polnareff
@IsaacKuo

Even though it wasn't really planned well, I end up liking how Avdol was handled because it fits in with this general recurring theme of tone whiplash in Stardust Crusaders. Like with the bizarrely humorous coda to Anubis ... you just never know what's coming. So. I first experienced JoJo from the six 1990s OVAs, and it was puzzling to me why Polnareff was so confused about Avdol dying. But I lacked the context that he thought Avdol had died before, but was wrong about that. In the manga story, the Stardust Crusaders have gone through a long and grueling gauntlet of deadly fights ... yet ultimately NONE of them have died yet. They always managed to somehow survive. So, basically, it's a long setup to expect that surely any sort of main character death would be amazing and long drawn out ... like Kakyoin's ... or Iggy's ... or even Polnareff's almost sacrifice. And yet, Avdol just DIES. Polnareff, of course, can't believe it. He can't believe it at all, after all they've been through and all he's experienced so far. So, Avdol's death tells us, the readers, that no one is safe. This story isn't fair. It adds real weight to Polnareff's situation when he realizes that there's no way out for him - that life isn't fair. Polnareff and Iggy really could just die without accomplishing anything to help protect the others from Vanilla Ice. But Polnareff comes to accept that possibility, and peacefully bids Iggy farewell. Polnareff is at peace because he knows he can't take being the one saved by someone else's sacrifice ... he dies saving Iggy instead, and he's okay with that. He can accept that sort of fairness. He can make some sort of fairness, even if it doesn't mean much (obviously, Iggy's in no state to be able to help the others ... he probably won't even be able to run away from Vanilla Ice). And it adds more weight to Iggy's determination that he can't just accept that. Iggy understands why Polnareff is at peace sacrificing himself to save him, but Iggy can't accept that sort of "fairness". He just can't. So sure ... taken on its own, Avdol's death and resurrection is pretty sloppy story telling. But viewed in a context of what it was able to contribute to the Polnareff's and Iggy's stories, I think it was pretty okay.

I was even excited for the fight between silver chariot and him when he was revived because i thought it would be a bitter fight where the man that once saved chariots life had to be killed again by him, but no he's just alive and the fake avdol is like a shadow demon or something, really ruined it for me

I'm surprised you didn't mention Dragon Ball at all. Probably my first experience of botched everything. I stopped watching it after the Cell Saga and even by then I think most characters had died two or three times yet everyone still absolutely freaked out every time anyone was hurt.

Dragon Ball was my chilhood, one of the series that got me into anime and manga and as such it has a special place among pleasant memories my mind but there is a reason why I have not seen it again in over a decade and why I would not touch Super even with a stick, I think it would not hold-up for me and would partially ruin what it made that series special, funnny enough I think Hokuto no Ken and Saint Seiya resisted the pass of time better for me, so I either find them less flawed than DB or I was simply not as attached to those series as I was with DB, not sure yet about it.

One of the biggest issues I had with Avdol's revival was HOW we learned he was revived - the whole plot about tricking Polnareff with Avdol's "father" was something I found as an act of cruelty to Polnareff. Part 3, in general, is something I feel had a thing about being needlessly making Polnareff the butt of jokes. Hiding it for a bit I can sort of get, but revealing it the way they did like some petty revenge plot was honestly awful. It was like they were playing some cruel joke behind Polnareff's back for getting Avdol killed and that they all honestly believed and felt that way, and I just couldn't get behind that. It was an awful thing to do, and an awful thing to play around with. It's also something I think would normally be out of character for them - I would think Avdol would have found it cruel along with Kakyoin, and Jotaro would also find it pointlessly cruel - if they felt that way, I think he'd find more benefit in just telling him point-blank, but he also understood that Polnareff had grown past that and that he's definitely someone worth working past such emotions with. And it'd be a joke that Joseph would find taken too far, you know? It's definitely one of the worst done revival plots I've ever seen for these reasons. It doesn't help that his actual death was something so incredibly lame that I, too, couldn't' take it seriously and that his death AND Iggy's left Polnareff feeling so inadequate and alone - again, something needlessly cruel. Avdol and Iggy just ended up as a foil to Polnareff, and usually by making fun of him in some way - and it's awful. They don't really end up having value of their own, and there is so much I have to say about Iggy as I honestly don't like him, but his death was needlessly cruel and ridiculous. Avdol's death reminds me of Loki's in Infinity War - dead "from a bit of Chokeplay" that left you in denial from how poorly done it was is honestly an insult to their character.

I agree with most of these points but I feel the exact opposite about vanilla ice. You really can't undersell the impact of a sudden, meaningless death. You don't get the visceral "there's his corpse there" sure, but the lack of it only serves to intensify the feeling where you stop and blink and have to realize the reality of the situation. Admittedly it's been done way better but a loss where your primary question is Why It Had To Happen can be really devastating when the frank answer is that it didn't.

I cant believe you wouldnt disrespect his sacrifice at the end like that. I think it was supereyelatchwolf that made a video on this but he had to instantly make the decision to save his friends just after saying that this was no time to olay hero since the crusaders were in the endgame in dio's mansion. It was a hugely impactful death since it meant that this was a serious enemy and would push polnaref to take things seriously at the end with the additional sacrifice of iggy

The Falcon dude talking a literal gigabomb to the face only to be kinda injured after a couple of weeks was so atrocious that it made me forget the name of the Falcon dude. And it was a really cool dude up until it was unkillable. In complete opposite of the topic of this video, i have a love / hate relationship with Bucciarati "surviving" in Part 5. I remember watching the anime (im not a manga reader, feel free to insult me) i was so damn sure Buciarati was able to cling to life thanks to Trish's Stand Power until... Spice Girl was revealed and i wasn't. That was a huge miss IMO, for Thrish to have a reality bending Stand would've been fine since she's Diavolo's blood and That leaves the whole Bucciarati situation unanswered. That being said it's a pretty neat use of the "resurrection" trope: instead of letting us suffer and than bring him back because we were suffering Araki left him there for us to belive things were fine, but in fact he was dead several days ago and there was nothing we could've done. I dont hate the Avdol problem that much because Araki managed to kill him in a very meaningful way instead of just toying with us, but even more wit Bucciarati it was like he died twice AND ALSO we knew for half the time he was gonna die inevitably. It doesn't make sense, but it works in the narrative flow of te story IMO. Plus i have my own personal interpretation on how Bucciarati didn't die thanks to his own destiny being modified by Mista in the Rolling Stone arc and that comehow plaing into him surviving the deadly encounter. Also, non JoJo related, it made sense in the story and actually was turning point for the story and for many characters but... the Nagato's Rinne Tensei to bring back the Leaf Village citizens he killed was pretty ass, ESPECIALLY cause Kakashi DIED in that moment. I remember dropping genuine tears of sadness when Kakashi died and to just bring him back was a slap to my emotions.

I actually think his death to Vanilla Ice was really effective. Within the first few minutes of the fight, he’s gone. It shows how dangerous Vanilla Ice is and how people can just die to these powers. It really makes you consider how dangerous he is, and that’s he not just another disposable goon. If they removed Avdol’s fake death, then it would have an even bigger impact.

im okay with his deaths. of course partially because im biased towards wanting to see more of him, but he became more of a fun character after his death. he was pretty bland before and I only liked him because he looked like me. after he came back he developed his catchphrases and sense of humour, and ultimately both his deaths were him sacrificing for his friends(even after lying to iggy and pol that he wouldn't) and that to be made him even more heroic. I'd like to have believed that he didn't die by Vanilla Ice, but he got transported to another universe, just with no arms.

I agree, I felt the same as you when Avdol died the second time, and I hate the fact that everyone knew that Avdol was alife except Polnareff, And lead me to think that gimmick of "Avdol's dad" was just a cheap way of Araki to give Polnareff more remorse before he faced Hail2 you guy. In the case of Pell at least he wasn't part of the main cast, but it hindered the narrative of One Piece making the readers doubt every single death, for example, most of OP fans weren't sure about the deaths of P and P characters in the whole cake ark, Those deaths were supposed to be heavy and sad but, as readers, we can't be sure, because "if Pell survived a nuke on his face, this character could surly survive this" some fans argue that "he survived because he had awakened his fruit, granting his super regen" but come on how an awaken zoan user would lose to Robin pre-timeskip

I can at least respect how Araki gives concrete reasons for the actions taken. In this case, keeping Avdol hidden while he recovered. (Many resurrections happen ‘just because’ or for reasons that, if explained and should’ve been explained, would make this comeback expected.) At the same time, I can’t name a single later instance where a good guy character death is caused by someone other than the main antagonist.
