My ma died two weeks ago. I'm sitting in the car tonight, driving into work, crying -- needing a piece of who she was, and knowing it was gone forever. I turned on the radio to get my shit together before work, and I hear the opening to the first refrain of 'Ain't No Man Can Save Me' -- My mom would have loved this song -- I don't know these guys, but yeah, I'm a fan now. Thanks.

@Michael Williams Hey. Ministering to the mourning isn't predatory. I'm a Christian already, Michael. But I get why it seems like in times of personal crisis Christians seem to be on a recruitment drive. It's how most are taught to love others. Provide the comfort of their beliefs to others. Thanks for looking out for vulnerable people. Honestly. I hope you can see that you and Patricia are going for the same goal from opposite ends. Forgive each other and move on. You'll feel better.

They are grown men, Mary Kelly, and I’m sure they don’t need any sort of protection from us. I’m wondering what your proposed “protection” would even look like. I’m picturing you finding out where they live, and showing up there and saying something like “I’m here to protect you!!!”... Well, I’m pretty sure they’d be like, “But we don’t need protection sweet thang, and how would lil ol’ you do that anyways?” One of them would be saying that, while the other one dials 911 to get the stalker... aka you, off their land. So, imho, I think it’s best if we all just continue to enjoy their performances and not get involved in their personal lives.

That might be one of the creepiest things I've ever read, not just on KZbin, but anywhere. They are not helpless children, they are grown men & fathers. If they do need protection from anyone, it's from creepy fans that want to protect them.

I don't understand why people think that this song will completely change the Avett Brothers. This is only one song, some people like it, some people don't and that's fine. But they still rock and write banjo tunes and stuff like that. This song is not changing the Avett Brothers, it is just another song to add to their collection of songs to play live.

I love old school Avett, but I also like growing up. This album makes me feel like I'm ready for love again, and I'm willing to bet the majority of people who don't like it aren't prepared for that next step. As our perspective in life changes so does our appreciation and understanding of art. One day I will probably be liberated by something that I have no appreciation for right now. It's a scary task, to surrender to uncertainty. My aim isn't to belittle those who didn't enjoy this album, rather just to say that you may grow to like it in another stage of your life. :) music to grow old to

Some of you are acting like this is the first time the Avetts have done something out of their usual genre. They've experimented before. Sometimes it's worked really well, other times not so much. I'd say it worked well for them here. It's different, but it doesn't seem too unlike them. Besides, this very same album has "Divorce Separation Blues," which just BREATHS country/folk. Hell, they even yodel in it lol. They're just broadening their horizons and playing what they want, calm down people.

There ain't no man can save me There ain't no man can enslave me Ain't no man, a man that can change the shape my soul is in There ain't nobody here Who can cause me pain or raise my fears 'Cause I got only love to share If you're looking for a truth, I'm proof you'll find it there You got to serve something, ain't that right? I know it gets dark, but there's always a light You don't have to buy in to get into the club Trade your worries You gotta show up if you wanna be seen If it matters to you, Ma, it matters to me I'm gonna fall hard, yeah, I know I am When the crowds crack up, I laugh with them There ain't no man can save me There ain't no man can enslave me Ain't no man, a man that can change the shape my soul is in There ain't nobody here Who can cause me pain or raise my fear 'Cause I got only love to share If you're looking for a truth, I'm proof you'll find it there You say you look funny, I say you're a star I say you're whatever you think you are Watch the naysayers fall right in line If we believe it they'll say, "She is so pretty, he is so fine!" There ain't no man can save me There ain't no man can enslave me There ain't no man, a man that can change the shape my soul is in There ain't nobody here Who can cause me pain or raise my fear 'Cause I got only love to share If you're looking for a truth, I'm proof you'll find it there You got to go somewhere, ain't that true? Not a whole lot of time for me or you Got a whole lot of reasons to be mad Let's not pick one I live in a room at the top of the stairs I got my windows wide open and nobody cares And I got no choice but to get right up When the sun comes through Ain't no man can save me There ain't no man can enslave me There ain't no man, a man that can change the shape my soul is in (my soul is in) There ain't nobody here Who can cause me pain or raise my fear 'Cause I got only love to share If you're looking for a truth, I'm proof you'll find it there If you're looking for a truth, I'm proof you'll find it there If you're looking for a truth, I'm proof you'll find it

I’m going to go out on a limb and say this is the new anthem of North Carolina’s struggles. This is the perfect time. This gospel of love and self confidence and fight against the man (whoever you think "the man" is) is a perfect statement to address what is happening in our great state with the #WEARENOTTHIS movement and fight for equality and rights to petition our government when discrimination happens to employees. We got only love to share, y'all. If you’re looking for truth, you’ll find it there. We are this. Say love.

North Carolina is pretty moderate. Not to mention it has some of the best places to raise a family in the country or go to college, so we have a huge amount of relocates in our area. It's a melting pot w/ a history that matters. Makes people sound silly when they judge a very progressive state, that they know nothing about. As for recent events, w/ the whole transgender issue, I can honestly say that does not represent many parts of the state. Our cities are primarily liberal, but we have a strong economy that attracts people from all walks of life and motivations.

Saw them live in Minneapolis a couple weeks ago with Brandi Carlile. They were brilliant and their live version of this was excellent. If you ever get a chance to see them perform live, TAKE IT.
