I've visited that museum but not for many years. I believe that the Shay on display there came from Cass after the museum sent the much more impressive Western Maryland #6 to be run there and Cass sent back one of theirs so that the museum would have something to display. The MARC 7100 was used as a head end power generator with the axles not driven. MARC now has enough equipment and does not need it. I have read that the 2-6-6-6 Allegheny's could possibly have outdone a Big Boy if given a chance. They were stronger in terms of tractive effort, but the C&O did not use them for speed.

8:11 and actually 490 was originally a 4-6-2 pacific that was converted into a 4-6-4 hudson when it got the streamlining.

That I didn’t know. Locomotive 2102 in my Reading, Blue Mountain, and Northern video was also built as a Pacific in the 1920s and converted to a Northern in the 1940s. Was that a common thing?

@@jayeibner974 ok first of all, the T-1s like 2102 were 2-8-0 consolidations that were converted into 4-8-4 northerns. Second, yeah it was common to rebuild locomotives, but there was a scale as to how "rebuilt" you wanted them. The T-1s are pretty much brand new locomotives with next to nothing left from their original 2-8-0 forms

4-4-0's are "american" types, not atlantics. atlantics are 4-4-2's
