My dad ran a homeless shelter in the city and commuted from the suburbs. One day he opened the car door at the train station without looking and a teen driver hit it and took it off. It took awhile to get another so he drove around like that. We kids told him he couldn't so he said, the law says you have to wear a seatbelt not have a door

They're called "Mormon crickets" because it's the specific type of cricket that created an infestation when the pioneers had been in the Salt Lake Valley for just a few years and the crickets were eating all the crops. That's when the "Miracle of the Seagulls" happened when the seagulls came in and ate up the crickets, would throw them up over the Great Salt Lake, and go back for more.

Our sons’ troop leaves for summer camp on Father’s Day. This really upset my wife because we couldn’t celebrate the day the way she wanted to. I felt bad missing her festivities while I spent the evening lakeside jigging for bass with the boys. Now my kids are grown and I’m still shipping out with the troop on Sunday.

There was a movie back in the 50s; I do not remember its name. A female character, I believe it may have been Judy Holliday who played her, said something that was memorable to many girls and women, and I'd bet there were a handful of men who liked it, too. Two women were discussing this guy that the Judy Holliday-ish character had met. "He has a sense of humor, but he has a sense of serious, too!" This deeply touched our hearts, and we completely understood it in other people. People with a sense of serious were seriously lacking in our 1950's times, which were not really the godly good old days they are said to have been. Guys, believing Christians, those who really believe in Jesus, as if He is actually real, and our judge AND Savior, have a sense of serious, or they'd never have gotten saved. And with a sense of serious, there are things that believing Christians will not do, or at least they will repent from it if they do, otherwise, they don't have, and probably never have had, a fear of God. So they will lack the benefits of a fear of God, which is wisdom, as defined by God. I don't really believe I am humorless, but I have been called a "humorless * * * * * " by a leading Calvinist on CARM Forum, the Dead Zone, but that was because I called him on calling Jesus, "Jeebus", which he loved to do. (See, it was because he was supposed to be a Christian, and shouldn't be mocking Jesus, even though his theology mocks the character of God). And years ago, I got banned by the Babylon Bee, for questioning some "humor" they descended to, in as gentle and respectful a manner as I could. But yeah, "serious" truth is actually important,, even more important than humor.

Job is also my pick for best father in the Bible, and that’s for all 20 of his children. In the first chapter, we find that he continually besought the Lord for the sake of his children. Consider his words about his lost children: Job 29:5 “When the Almighty was yet with me, when my children were about me;” But beyond him being a great father to his natural children, read Job chapter 29, and see his heart as a father of the fatherless! Job 29:12-17 “Because I delivered the poor that cried, and the fatherless, and him that had none to help him. 13 The blessing of him that was ready to perish came upon me: and I caused the widow's heart to sing for joy. 14 I put on righteousness, and it clothed me: my judgment was as a robe and a diadem. 15 I was eyes to the blind, and feet was I to the lame. 16 I was a father to the poor: and the cause which I knew not I searched out. 17 And I brake the jaws of the wicked, and plucked the spoil out of his teeth.” O, to be such a dad as that! If you guys just want to live without working at your current lifestyle, just multiply your yearly costs by 25. That will get you close using the generic 4% FIRE rule, and then if you want to be more in depth you can do other calculations. Say you wanted to be more conservative by living on 3% of your net worth per year, then you could divide your annual costs by 3% and get that number.

There was no "real Indiana Jones" but there was a "real Belloq". Apparently there was a French archaeologies forced to search for antiquities in Egypt for the Naxis, because his wife and kids were in occupied France. When you think about how little effect Jones really had on the plot of Raiders, it's plain to see that he's just an American self-insert character into what would otherwise have been a depressing tragic French movie with subtitles. True story.

What do you mean? Samuel had no children? That’s not what the Bible says. I Chronicles 6:28 “And the sons of Samuel; the firstborn Vashni, and Abiah.” I Samuel 8:1-5 “And it came to pass, when Samuel was old, that he made his sons judges over Israel. 2 Now the name of his firstborn was Joel; and the name of his second, Abiah: they were judges in Beersheba. 3 And his sons walked not in his ways, but turned aside after lucre, and took bribes, and perverted judgment. 4 Then all the elders of Israel gathered themselves together, and came to Samuel unto Ramah, 5 And said unto him, Behold, thou art old, and thy sons walk not in thy ways: now make us a king to judge us like all the nations.” Not the best things to be said about his sons. Joel, also known as Vashni, had a son named Heman, who became one of David’s chief musicians and worship leaders. AMBA

Over Easter some cable channel was airing the original Indiana Jones movie. As I had never seen it I thought it was a good time to finally watch it. I popped some corn and eagerly sat down to watch. After about 20 minutes I was so utterly bored I changed the channel to My Little Pony or something. How did it ever become so popular? Total let down.
