The Leading Straight Punch is a critical part of Jeet Kune Do. It's the core of scientific self-defense and if we don't master it we're putting our safety in jeopardy. That said, there are a few critical mistakes many students make with the straight lead and in this video Sifu Jason details them for you.

It always seemed to me that the reason JKD spends so much time on the straight lead is because its the best punch for interception. Because its lead hand and its straight, it gets to target faster than any other punch except the jab...but the jab is not apt to do enough damage to make the most of an interception. Tactically, its sort of like a check hook in boxing...but with Wing Chun-inspired mechanics.

Great video as always. Very interesting separation between the quick jab and straight lead. I've been guilty of thinking about it in the way you showed in the video. Really liked the outro too, you working on that punching bag. Some nice moves there.

Yes the Lead Punch has to be integrated & one has to know when to use it as well as how.

Great put it all together lesson. Without footwork, evasion and parries the effectiveness (and safety) of all lead strikes less effective (more dangerous to boot).

Exactly! Guys are going out there and using it “raw” - then they get nailed over the top or around the corner and figure it doesn’t work at all. The problem is, as you said, the lack of integration/tactics and not the punch. Thanks for the input. 🙏😎

Very little difference between doing the lead straight in a completely straight way or doing the lead straight with an arc. In the first case or the second case what is going to stop the forward motion when snapping the punch are the ligaments. No slowdown just a snap....
