I think one reason that makes the backrooms so "delightfully creepy" is this feeling of being lost and desperately trying to find an exit under time pressure. Everybody knows this kind of bad dream that often occurs when you are under stress over a long time: You hectically walk through some kind of labyrinth and try to find a way out because you have to for some reason (because of an appointment or something else) but everything seems to block you from finding your destination. The backrooms make this bad feeling tangible and even give you a chance to reach your destination.

I had a bad dream when I was overwhelmed with stress, but instead of a labyrinth, it's an endless flight of spiral stairs in an abandoned apartment. I ran down as fast as I could because I know something was chasing me fast. I was terrified and desperately trying to find a way out, but it's feels like I'm running down on a flight of stair towards the abyss. Before whatever that thing is caught me, I woke up. I dreamed about this a few times and I clearly know what that dream is all about.

I used to work the night shift at a correctional facility with small dorms scattered around. This is how it felt when our washing machine didn't work and I had to take the laundry to the vacant dorm across from ours. You're so used to knowing there's people in those rooms and a coworker somewhere going into one and knowing you're completely alone except for some wolf spiders is so creepy.

@@Iron_Wolf_365 I worked at rikers island (NYC Dept. of Corrections) , and when it was lights out for the inmates I'd have to do a headcount every hour on the hour. All I remember was being more paranoid and alert as the night progressed, because you literally have rows of beds full of potentially hostile inmates that may lunge out of their beds to get at you. And it got worse the deeper in you got towards the back of the bay, because every step you took closer to that back wall, was another step you'd have to fight for if things went sideways and you needed to get out. Crazy shit man.

I remember playing a demo fps parkour game that had a backrooms level, and I didn’t think much of it. When I shot out a light to hide I saw a shadow emerge. When I came to the shadow and took damage, I thought it was first a bug/glitch. But then the more I played, the weirder it got and then I got into a loop room. I still didn’t think it was that weird tough. Once I got out of the loops exit I clipped through the fabric of reality and then the game crashed. A year later I installed a map on gmod called: “The backrooms” I didn’t think this was anything similar with what I played a year ago. When I played the horror map with my and friends, one had pussied out and one was bored and left me alone, but I wanted to complete the level. Yet still today I don’t know what to do when in the backrooms. But now I think I know how too beat it.

To enter: You must noclip by either the floor or an wall that seems out of place. To exit: Find your way through the entire place, by random means.

Its so creepy because there are no windows, at every corner you don’t know if someone or somethings going to be behind it, and the fact that everything feels random, the walls are random, the lights are random and not symmetrical. And just the walls with the print and the carpet make it feel so scary, also the dark spots when there are no lights.

The way I see the utter fear of the backrooms is as such: we all literally work until we retire and at that point we tend to slow down, not really enjoy our lives to the fullest because we're older and then we die. Like the symbolism I see is that you're stuck in an endless loop of empty office spaces which to me represent the dull repetition of going to a job that doesn't fulfill you, being forced to check your watch wanting to escape your proverbial cubicle you're forced to be in whilst trying not to go crazy with boredom. The walls are oppressive and dull, the carpet is cheap and something you'd see in any office space and the color clashes horribly with the walls to make you feel like they're closing in on you even though a room can be large, kinda like the stresses of work that many people may feel while being stuck in a job they hate. Moreso you're stuck at said job just to barely make ends meet, trying to navigate your way out, but sadly very few people do. Crazy shit man.

Actually, those aren’t bloodstains. The red stains on the ceiling and walls are a substance called “carpet fluid”. It is said to be highly toxic to anyone in the backrooms, so don’t drink it :’) Also, bodies in level 1 disappear almost immediately after death, so unless they died right on the ceiling, it’s probably just carpet fluid.

This could be such a great concept for a complex game, with realistcal walking and running speed, also the feeling of stepping into moisty carpet with every step, the game could give your character head wobbles that would really get the player sick and dizzy (even though this is politcally incorrect), wouldn't this be the closest backroom's experience?

In the backrooms you don't have any senses especially hunger and thirst. Even you sense of time is relevantly distorted. I'm pretty sure the only level you feel the need to eat and sleep is level 994, the only level that allows it

I played this game essentially blind because my old abused pc loaded complete darkness for the walls and the only things I could see were the lights and my watch. It was an even more terrifying game than playing it properly sometimes, makes you rely on sound and just the feeling that you're walking into a wall

pretty much, your goal is to keep going as long as you can or find a exit. You have a sanity bar that decreases on multiple ways, like if you don't check your watch every 30 seconds

Thats a common theme in the backrooms It's more psychological horror for a main reason You are trapped outside or reality with monstrosities that hunt you down always watching in an endless maze most don't make it out of If you Survive or wander far enough eventually you'll end up somewhere else in the backrooms or eventually you'll find another spot to no clip through You'll either fall into the void get back to reality or end up back at the start of the backrooms It's pretty danm scary when you realize how inescapable it is

I feel that the character speed is way too fast. It feels more like a shooter. Nobody would be able to walk/run that fast all the time without running out of breath. Add a sprint, but make the player run out of breath pretty quickly. It would also add to the suspense if the character was slower. Also more variation in the room design would be good. Wide open halls, rooms with just pillars, narrow and wide hallways, pits, a vent here and there, some furniture or objects. Oh and less stains.
