@@CichlidBros Very interesting, Heisei Nishiki are the metallic version of Doitsu Taisho Sanke. A result from a crossing of Sanke and Platinum Ogon! Info from NextDayKoi.

@@CichlidBros Btw lily pads won't do. You need a nice tight netting tent over the whole pond. Those koi are too beautiful to be taken away by a herons or raccoons. I really want to see them grow.

How many gallons is your pond? Looking to find a cheap de icer for my new pond, its 2250g one place i read said gallons didnt matter its surface area that matters. Other places say it's the gallons.. if its gallons, im screwed because then id need high wattage and that would bump my electric bill 100+ more a month
@CichlidBros3 жыл бұрын
My pond is roughly 1000 gallons or so. My one de icer worked well last winter. I’m planning to do the same this winter with some slightly larger koi a year later

So I am in the Midwest (Indiana) moved here in May 2020 from Chicago...i built my Koi pond but opted to keep the koi inside the first year as they were small and i was not certain they would survive the winter. QUESTION: since you opened your pond and fish are okay....what happens now that since a COLD SPELL came in today 04/20 and its snowing again! AGGHH how did the fish react to this? Weekend of 04/10 gave me hopes that i could put them out there but now weather is 29 & 39F for lows so i kept them inside.
@CichlidBros3 жыл бұрын
Ah I know, can’t believe it snowed today. Overall the koi are doing fine. As long as the pond doesn’t ice over, they adapt to the temps pretty well. For moving koi outdoors, I’d maybe wait a few weeks until it’s not so up and down in temps for them right away
@sirtubemaster3 жыл бұрын
@@CichlidBros okay thanks! my plan is that when pond temps hit 60's ill move them out.....right now its at 48! inside pond is at 67 so quite the difference but i did get 5" of growth through the winter as they are pushing 8" now from 3" when i bought them. OH & BTW I bought my Koi from same place you did :)
@thurston383 Жыл бұрын
No where near deep enough, needs to be at least 4ft deep for us in the uk, and Chicago is colder, should leave the pump running too, running water shouldn’t freeze, mine was fine this winter even tho my pond mostly froze apart from where the water entered the pond
@CichlidBros Жыл бұрын
It’s just fine and they’ve been good in 3 winters now
@thurston383 Жыл бұрын
@@CichlidBros how cold does it get there? Water temp of 1°c can kill koi, depth helps prevent rapid temp fluctuations, can go from 14°c to below freezing here overnight
@CichlidBros Жыл бұрын
@@thurston383 it doesn’t matter how cold it gets, if it’s below freezing and ices over, the water below is not going to freeze solid. And the pond is over 4 ft deep in the middle
