The Balance Between Savoring and Devouring Games

The worst is when you want to savor a game, but the mechanics or story are so engaging that you have to use every ounce of willpower in your body not to go too fast. That happened to me with Yakuza Ishin, where I wanted to savor each section, but then something so crazy would keep happening in the story that I didn't want to stop lol.

I basically played rdr2 and gta5 at breakneck speed cause rdr2 was trying to beat KZbin spoilers and gta5 was rental time at Redbox lol

I really wish I could savor more games. I’m an emulation person so I have a lot of games I find interesting that I hope to play, but I’m so occupied finding business in the game I mod that I rarely find myself able to really enjoy a game. I watch KZbin on the side of most things because of ADHD, but I feel bad doing that with any gameplay experience because of how much I enjoy the behind the scenes of games. I’d argue the first game I remember genuinely ‘savoring’ to be recently “Star Fox Adventures” as it’s one of the first games I remember loving so much to keep going back to it at any time I could. I’m glad I did because I never got past Krazoa Palace on my legitimate copy, and I’m so glad I really did enjoy it. Hopefully there are more games I can find that grip me like SFA did that I can really enjoy like I hope to.

I just beat final fantasy 16 and the main game itself is so long that I skipped practically all the side quests and some of the cut scenes (there's a million of those) but yeah it can be tough when a bunch of games get released at the same time and you've got work to deal with as well

Hey Shan, first video I ever see of you, but since there aren't a metric fuckton of comments, I was eager to leave my opinion here. I think when it comes to either devouring or savoring a game, that most of the time, for me, it depends on the game. There are games that I've wanted to devour that I end up savoring, or viceversa. One example of that has to be Hyrule Warriors AoC. I really enjoy these types of games, and I was planning on fully 100%ing AoC, but when I reached the end of the story, I just couldn't play it anymore. I took that as my brain telling me that I've had already had my fill. Another example of this is Nier Automata, a game I fully intended to savor, but ended up feeling like I was devouring it and I just ended up dropping it because I felt I wasn't enjoying it the way I ideally intended to. Of course, it's also worth noting that whether you devour or savor a game depends on what's going on in your life. I came to the conclusion that it's fully impossible to savor Elden Ring if you're a regular adult who has a job, there's just simply not enough time to go through all of Elden Ring's content, have a normal healthy life and simply just ignore any other game that comes out that picks your interest. My latest savor game is Resi 4 Remake. I'm playing through it with my sister since we saw my dad play the original when it came out. Sometimes she would like to binge but I know it would be best to take it bit by bit, lmao.

Loved reading it! I relate to a lot of what you're saying and I definitely can attest to my preference of savor/devour varying based on what's going on in my life - something I wish I would have touched on in the vid. Plus, you never really know how your experience is going to pan out in terms of play sessions, especially if it's a game you've never played before. A game like Elden Ring for myself I was more keen on what the experience was going to be like in that fact we knew it was going to be similar to past soulsbornes. I'm slowly making my way through resi4 remake as well - cheers!

just had this experience with re4 remake. stretched it out till sunday ultimately but as ive gotten older ive been less inclined to blow through games and tend to slow down a bit and enjoy the experience.

Neither one is for me, as, unfortunatley, I am cursed with The Curse of Completionist. I can not drop a game unless I 100% it. That, or if I burn out on it on the way to Completion. There's a lot of games I've dropped like that and never returned to, and a lot that I perfected… And also haven't come back to because it's still a burnout, just a post-completion one. Etiher way, I… I guess I _burn_ through the games?
