I love walking on the South Downs. I visited the Long Man brewery when I walking to Wilmington.

A very nicely put together and presented channel. I cant understand why it has so few views.

Probably because he stopped loading content a few years ago. You gotta consistently produce new content to get a following on YT, generally. Unless you luck out and go viral with one of your first few vids

Arthur Watkins, the author of "The Old Straight Track" put forward the idea the man is a dodder man. The two dodder poles we used to line up with skyline landmarks to navigate across England before roads were reliable and the packhorse was the most common mode of shipping goods. The dodder man was a navigator, a surveyor and a property conveyancer. A wise man with integrity. Arthur Watkins noticed the landscape was criss crossed with landmarks strung along straight lines. Each line would connect points with a particular colour attached to them. Red house, red camp, red hill for brick or clay Whitemanswicke, whittlesham, for salt Blackhut, Blackton for coal And so on. He supposed the lines were important trade and navigation routes for these commodities. He named the lines "Ley Lines". The idea has grown legs and acquired an accretion of new age supernatural mysticism.

Know the area well having stayed in Alfriston on many occassions and walked across to Wilmington, lovely area of the country. The Long Man is interesting but the beer is absolutly wonderful well worth a tipple or two.

DELIVERANCE Arise chalk man of Wilmington Take up thy staves and stand Then lead us back to ages past From these Corona lands Transport us to our hallowed past When Southdown chalk was new An honest more enlightened age Where human beings were few Just us and ours forever In a place for which we yearned Depicted there on grassy slopes Never to return

nice poem, I thought the poles were to represent someone pushing back the doors of darkness. I don't know if that is true or not, kind of irrelevant in that we should all constantly look to push back the doors of darkness, or remind people of who we are and the opportunity for a more enlightened age.

Whoa this is epic! And is very different when compared to the content created as The Bald Explorer for KZbin. I’m guessing this was scripted for a broadcast programme… (I haven’t got to the end yet so not seen the credits) great presentation style! 🤟

I have always believed the Old Man of Wilmington to be Nordic and the two Staves he walks with to be one of the earliest known signs of the sport of Nordic Walking.
