In a village by the fjord, there lived a Viking named Sven,
He was fierce with a sword, and the bravest of men.
But alas, there was trouble in Sven’s mighty domain,
For his wife, Helga, ruled with a voice like a hurricane.
"Oh, Sven, my dear, put down that axe,
No raiding today, ‘til you scrub and you wax.
The dishes are dirty, the floor’s in a mess,

Sven sighed a deep sigh, as he glanced at his ship,
His heart yearned for battle, for a mighty sea trip.
But with Helga’s stern gaze, he knew he must stay,
And wash all the dishes ‘fore he could sail away.
"Oh, Sven, my dear, put down that axe,

His comrades all laughed as they drank their strong ale,
“Poor Sven’s stuck at home, he’s no wind in his sail.”

For a happy Helga meant he might raid again.
With plates shining bright and the floor spick and span,

“Go, raid now, my warrior, our house is well-fed.”

The dishes are clean, the floor’s in its prime,
Go plunder the lands, and return home in time!"
So Sven sailed away, to the horizon’s bright gleam,
A Viking of legend, with a housewife’s dream.
For he knew every raid, every battle, each fight,
Would end with more dishes, come the very next night.

That is funny and relatable. However I think we should consider this more before we leave the topic. Specifically let's consider Helga's right to demand Sven clean before going to provide for her. First we can infer that Sven is risking his life, working hard to sail a ship, and eating poor travel rations, all for the purpose of providing for her, and also let's be honest, wealth. Ultimately however despite being able to condemn Sven for greed, we should also understand that the wealth he obtains will completely change Helga's lifestyle. Her life will be transformed in a way that it could never have if he did not go out to obtain wealth. So though in hindsight we can probably condemn Sven for greed, this is no reason for Helga to be ungrateful because ultimately all the wealth he obtains goes on to benefit her. Considering the massive impact Sven will have on her life if he is successful, we should now consider what she is doing to deserve it. Suppose she is cleaning house and dishes all the while he is gone, does this make it right for her to demand he do the same when he is home? Well consider this, Sven maintains his ship while in port he provides food, and money, he already cooks while on campaign. Is the housekeeping, and the dishwashing benefiting Sven while he is gone? It is not, it is simply Helga maintaining a habit and taking care of herself, something they both do while apart. So when Sven comes back from a campaign, he brings riches, he brings food, he brings protection. And at this time, while he is home after he has already provided and done his work, she then demands he do her work as well at the only time she could meaningfully do something to repay him? And no making babies is not a repayment for what he has done, it is mutually benefiting, and it is something both owe to each other regardless of any other factors. Unless Sven is lazy and does not even try to do his job or is incapable of doing it, I can see no reason why Helga can demand such action from him. The point is that in relationships things need to be fair, without fairness there is no reason for it to continue in the eyes of the one getting the worse end of the deal. If Helga does not want to do her job, she should not marry a man who wants to do his job, because she will make him do her job, before he has the privilege of doing his. A most unprofitable arrangement. I understand some scenarios in the modern day do not allow traditional roles to work out so simply. If both the husband and the wife have to work to make ends meet, they will both have to work together to get these jobs done. In that case household jobs should be clearly outlined, and assigned to avoid confusion, and both should have to live up to the terms in the video, if any terms are in place. Remember fairness in all relationships.

Otherwise, In any relationship, fairness and mutual respect are crucial. Whether roles are traditional or adapted to modern circumstances, clear communication about expectations is key. It’s important to recognize and appreciate each other’s contributions, whether they involve providing materially or maintaining the household. Ultimately, a relationship thrives when both partners feel valued and their efforts are acknowledged, fostering a sense of mutual support and equity. He loved his wife enough, he'd rather do the dishes and floors before raiding. Happy wife, happy life! :)
