The proudest day of my life was becoming a Green Beret. Nothing in world can ever shake me! I went in as a kid from the streets of Newark and Irvington NJ and came out a man who takes nothing but looks for no trouble, but if I am faced with it I will deal with it the best way I can. Trained as one of America’s Finest Fighting Machine I will always stand for the Honor of this Great country and fight for all our freedoms. God bless America

My father was the Chief Medical Officer for the Royal Australian Regiment in Viet Nam. He was from Bendigo, AU. He met my mother who was a Dutch nurse from Apeldoorn, NL. They met as she was was working at the orphanage in Vung Tau. He was visiting to see that the medical treatments were satisfactory. My father was visiting at FSPB, Fire Support Patrol Base Coral. There was a fierce engagement with the NVA. At the time there was a group of 6 Green Beret that were there to advise on NVA movements. When the NVA attacked, my father was near them and they swore to protect him. Two died when a RPG exploded, but the other 4 fought with all they had. My father survived with a little shrapnel in his leg. In no small measure to the fearless men of the Green Beret.

My dad volunteered for the Navy at the age of 17, in 1942 with his widowed mother’s permission. He fought in the South Pacific during WWII and was at the Battle of Midway. He was a radioman, a skill he maintained his whole life and had a ham radio license. He died in 2017 at the age of 93, I miss him very much. He loved his country and his family. God bless all veterans, thank you for your sacrifices.

Now our son is in the riverines, navy, our daughter is Air Force. We are so proud of all our soldiers, but I would like to say thank you to all the wife's, fathers mothers and dads, who wait at home and pray they don't get that knock on the door. Or listen to some smart ass, setting at Starbucks, who has no idea about honor or sacrifice, they just believe because they showed up they should get a trophy. God bless you! I was in the Army Reserves and in 1971 I served the two weeks of training at Ft. Devens, MA. Ft. Devens was the first stop for the Green Berets returning from Viet Nam. In the mess hall one day a group of Berets entered and all at my table (reserves) stood up and saluted them (the were not officers but we did not care). They were so young and I confess I was in awe of them. That night we were at a local bar and several of them were also there. I approached them and showed my respect and told them I actually felt guilty being in the reserves while they were on the front lines. Their response was "you are in the service and if and when you are called you will do what we do and there's nothing to feel guilty about. Now drag your chairs over and let's drink as comrades in arms." You can add class and style to tough as nails. They earned and deserve the ultimate respect.

I knew one man who was a green beret. He grew up friends with my older brother and did things to me that scared me to death, like hang me over the local bridge holding me by only my belt. Some other things to tell but won't bother. As a young kid, I thought he hated me and I thought he was crazy. Then he left for the military and I didn't see him again until he came back from Vietnam after serving two tours. The change in him was incredible and he treated me like I was his long lost best friend. Some years went by and he died on a graveled road rollover 3 miles from where he grew up. Since that happened, I have become friends with his sister and her stories about him could fill a book. RIP Jerry, I think of you often.

It's a great heart warming song. The Green Beret in my country is worn by the Royal Marine Commandos. Formed in ww2 they are 1 serious bunch of tough people. But all unit's and regiment's are proud of their history. I thank all men and women who put on their countries uniforms to keep there countries safe, and as far as pay goes far less than they truly deserve.

I was a Hospital Corpsman in 67 -69. The Green Beret Airborne Medics trained in Ft Sam Houston where I was stationed. I'm pretty sure some of the men I hung out with on base didn't come back and they were all good guy. Some were probably not as old as I was (and I was only 19 when I went in the Army). Too young to see the type of combat they were sent to the middle of. I saw men almost fresh from the battlefield (a day or so after) that I was sure wouldn't make it but they did and they all wanted to go back again. I prayed every single night and day and still think of those who didn't come home at all - the POWs, etc etc.

I lived my teens during the Vietnam War. Watched my brother go off to serve in Vietnam. Watched my mom age over that year he spent at war. Fortunately he was able to come home and continue his life. This song is one I played over and over while he was in Vietnam. It still brings a tear to my eye and an ache to my heart every time I hear it. Thank you to all that have served AND their families they left behind. You deserved a much much better reception when you returned than you faced. I was ashamed of our young citizens - those that should have stood with you rather than against you. Some (J. Fonda) I can never forgive. God bless you all. And God bless all who have served before and since.

@@DavidSmith-nk2rc I am doing well, thank you for asking. My feelings about the soldiers our country sends to war have not changed. Each war brings new heartache. I continue to stand behind those that serve. They are the heart and soul of our country and we all owe them so much. My brother has finally - after all these years- begun to talk a bit about Vietnam. He is doing well - enjoying his retirement. I hope our country remembers what it truly stands for in all the current turmoil going on in the USA today.

I was in 3 Corp, Vietnam, I flew hurts with the 162 Assault Helicopter Company. We supported the Green Berets looking for a NVA Brigade around Phuoc Vinh and Thanksgiving Day, 1967. A team consisting of 2 Americans and 4 Mercinaries was outside the perimeter setting up listening posts. Contact was made and the Company CO went out on the rescue chopper and had to climb down a rope ladder to rescue the troops, he was shot off the ladder and died. He was an excellent Commander. I still think about him. He was from Texas, San Antonio.. and too many brave ones die young.

I am not sure how anyone could give a thumbs down. My Grandfather was in the navy for the Korean war, he later succumbed to dementia. I stayed with him and my grandma due to this, and he would have horrible nightmares. Saddens me that citizens do not understand. I thank everyone! I live across the street from a Barracks, and no matter the chance, I will always salute and give thanks. May not seem like much. i read somewhere tho that soldiers actually do not like being thanked. maybe since it is North Dakota, soldiers, officers, EMT's, I try to always say thank you. even school janitors! thank you, for protecting us and giving the United States a piece of mind!

This song was brought out during an era in which we of Vietnam were literally spit upon when returning home. The song made me feel great when there were not a lot of things that the American public did to make me feel good. I will always owe a debt to Barry Sadler for this and for the song "Okie From Muskogie" which also was patriotic. Times have changed and I wear a Combat Veteran Vietnam hat and never a day goes by when I am not thanked for my service.
