Hi Niall. Thanks for those kind comments. I wrote the song. My name is David Lawlor & I'm from Kilruane which is in the same parish as Cloughjordan. I wrote the song to commemorative your grandfathers brave & heroic actions at Easter 1916. I will publish the words below now for you.

The Ballad of Thomas MacDonagh From the streets of Cloughjordan where I grew as a boy, To the Knocknacree Woods which filled me with joy, At those fields around Rockwell where Kings held their throne, How I long for you now my Tipperary Home My young life up to now has been that of the bard As I stare from this cell to the Stone Breakers Yard, And with Pearse in Rathfarnam up at St. Enda's School, We dreamed of a vision to end British rule Chorus So farewell my young family, to Muriel my wife For the love of my country I lay down my life. As I'm brought from this cell in Kilmainham to die, 'Til we meet in the next life for now it's goodbye

So when Ireland came calling at Easter '16 We had volunteers ready, loyal and keen To lay down their lives as we took Dublin town To scatter an empire and break from the crown. For a week we held strong up at Jacobs old mill, A republic established and working until, From the General Post Office, orders came slow That we must surrender to General Lowe Chorus So I sit in this jail now alone and fatigued, As my fingers caress my mothers prayers beads. Oh this battle's been lost yet my heart skips with glee I know others will follow and make Ireland free. It's a glorious thing to die for ones land But I pray now my darling that you'll understand. Court martialled in secret now I'm walking to die Farewell my young family, God bless and goodbye Chorus x 2

As a grandson of Thomas MacDonagh I would love to know more about this song. Who wrote it. Also I am hearing challenged and would love if someone sent me the words.

Niall MacDonagh your Grandfather was a hero Sir! I know of him through Yeats' Easter 1916. May all the martyrs rest in peace.

john Mc donagh who cares, he was born a Mc and changed to Mac due to Gaelic overtones. He was executed and buried in quicklime for Ireland, my countryman decry us but Thomas deserves due respect, Uncle Niall the fella is an eejit as I’m sure you’ve gleaned.
