i was at this show - just 16 at the time. they were opening for the grateful dead, and I got a ride to San Francisco from l.a. i only had a vague notion who the Band was at the time, but this started my long road of fandom. so amazing to revisit the show 40 years later. I would see them again a few months later at the Palamino club in l.a. at that gig, I saw Rick Danko at the bar, sat right next to him and ordered a beer. my fake id worked, and I got to hang with Danko for about a half hour and pepper him with dumb questions. he was nice and funny, and told stories of hanging with Garcia this very evening.

A few days ago Robbie joined his brothers in Rock n Roll heaven where there are no differences just love and some great music! RIP boys and thank you for the great music you left us! My mother and Robbie were good friends back in the early 60’s, then with Ronnie when they lived on The Six Nations on the Grand River in “Caledonia” Ontario, Canada, otherwise known as the Reserve in “Caledonia”, then with the Hawks when their lives were just beginning in Rock n Roll! I hope she’s up there rocking with them! I go to the Reserve in “Caledonia” once a month and always think of the Band when I go. The song “Caledonia” is definitely a tribute to their beginning! What I love most about The Band is their concerts were all about the music, no flashy stage or gimmicks, just the guys their instruments and voices, they were that great! They will always be my favourite band! Not many bands can make you “feel” their music to your very core! Say what you want about Robbie, he held The Band together for as long as he could but you can’t compete with drugs and drugs are what destroyed The Band not Robbie! And his ego so many speak of was well earned, just look at his catalog of music!

Sorry for the delay in responding, I came close to joining everyone up there Rocking & Rolling! Thank you for the kind wishes about my mother, I know she’s up there Rocking her heart out! I meant to say “partied together” on the Reserve/Six Nations in Caledonia, and from there they became very good friends until their lives went in different directions! I get goose bumples when I drive up to the Reserve thinking about all of the great stories she told me about when they were good friends! Funny thing about her was for 74 great years, ONLY ROCK MUSIC was allowed to be played in her house!! I remember as a young teen I started to become a little more versatile in music. I liked Madonna, and a few others, she laughed and said, “Madonna will be forgotten in a couple years,” and I was NEVER allowed to play anything but Rock while living under her roof 🤣

Thanks so much for the set list, I think it makes it easier to promote The Band, I'm often trying to turn young and old onto their unique sonic energy which was not only influential trailblazing, but an evolving concept of musical collaboration and love, through several linups. A setlist and dates make it easier to cross reference different renderings of songs over time, as with the Byrds, the Grateful Dead, the Allman Brothers, and many others from James Taylor to Chuck berry, to the Cure and the Stones.

Plus, he stated in Once Were Brothers that they were going to take a hiatus and work on individual projects...perhaps reforming after a couple of years. One thing that I never quite understood about Levon’s anger about The Last Waltz is his assertion that Robbie was shutting The Band down without an avenue of recourse for the others. Ok...then what are we doing watching this video? Don’t get me wrong: I love Levon, and I don’t take “sides” on the feud. All I know is that they DID reform, and if Levon was truly that angry at RR about The Last Waltz, why did he join Robbie onstage at a Rick Danko concert roughly a year after TLW?

Interesting how Robbie Robertson has been demonized and minimized from the Band in the dispute with Levon Helm. Let me state that I love Levon Helm, and that I saw him many times in concert, I met him personally and saw his 70th birthday party concert shortly before he died. He was a wonderful person. But, let's go back. In the Big Pink days with Bob Dylan, Levon Helm had left the Band and was touring without them. If you look at the Basement Tapes, you will not see Levon Helm. This was the Band's most fruitful time, as well as Dylan's. The groundbreaking "Music From Big Pink" album had eleven songs .Four were written by Robertson, four were written by Manuel. None was written by Helm. Manuel sang six songs, Danko sang four. Helm sang only one song, although it was "The Weight." Otherwise he acted as drummer, and nothing else. On the second album, "The Band" all twelve songs were written by Robertson. with help on two songs by Danko and Manuel. Manuel was considered the principal singer for the Band and sang on more songs than either Danko or Helm. Even on his grammy award winning album from 2008, "Dirt Farmer" Levon Helm wrote no songs. Why is Robertson demonized, why is Manuel diminished, and why is Levon Helm canonized. I thought this was ....'The Band'....

Have you ever been in a band? Robbie Robertson lip synced most of richard manuels parts live. He planned their "break-up", edited the last waltz with his buddy scorsese to give the final word as Robertson the maestro, and did nothing to help his old friends when they needed it most. He fancied himself the genius and them his "band" who played "his" music. I dont care who wrote the chords or the words to "the weight" or "the night they drove old dixie down", but I can tell you that those songs are what they are because of Levon Helm. And everytime that shit is played, Robbie Robertson collects a check. The band loved music. They just wanted to play. They didnt care about the business end and they should have, but Robbie Robertson is a terrrible human being. Levon cared about the music more than the money, which is why he left during the dylan era. He didnt like the vibes. He went to earn less money on an oil rig.

***** Robbie was a very skilled prolific writer, he had a system I learned too, but he was also a great lyricist, though the song that earned The Band the most money The Night They Drove Old Dixie Down the later 2/3rds of it were written by Levon, not Robbie though he never got any writing credits..for it as Robbie's version was to sympathetic to the North.. Robbie betrayed all the members of The Band with the Last Waltz Contract, as it was actually with the labels and studio and Last Waltz Productions and not the Band as they were lead to believe which was only Robbie and Martin Scorsese..the Band members signed where it said, "Wereas it pertains to you.." when I saw that, among other sections I knew what went down...who decides what pertains to Them... Also remember Rick Danko and Richard Manuel were also great writers and both had written with Dylan, Robbie learned song writing from Dylan but also if you are really familiar with his genius John Simon.. I know all too much of all this to go into great detail, they were my friends but also I handled a lot of intricate personal details for a number of them as did a very few trusted others...but with any one of them all five The Bad would not have been the same they were a true unique ensemble that's one of the things that made them so great..any one of them could have been a band leader on their own it was like having five generals or in Garth's case 4 Generals and a High Admiral...who they all paid attention and respect too..!

Just watched this today and oh my goodness!!!! This band had so much talent it is ridiculous!!! I too am a Levon lover!!! But you can't a damn thing away from Rick Danko!!! His vocals were awesome and his playing speaks for itself!!! They ALL had their own way to shine for sure!!! As far as Robbie Robertson people don't realize that's who put this band in motion!!! This is actually his band!!!! I loved it when they were Dylan's band way back when!!! The Last Waltz is a must see concert!!!! First time I saw this it was in the movie theater and IT JUST DONT GET BETTER THAN THIS!!!! One of my favorite bands of all time!!!! Love and miss these guys!!!!! Love for Levon and The Last Waltz are absolute must See's!!!! Danko singing It Makes No Difference is by far my very favorite song by The Band!!!!

Actually Hawkins was at the base. He started with Levon and brought a 16 year old R.R. to ARK where Levon gave the thumps up (per RR). Eric Clapton said he originally believed RR was leader until he saw Levon led the band.

Levon and Robbie never spoke after that farewell performance because they wanted to keep playing.... until Levon was on his death bed... Robbie came to his room and held his hand but they never spoke again!!! The four went on to make music together without Robbie, until Richard took his life!!!! I LOVE THE BAND!!!! ❤️✌️🎶🎶

Robert, as a life-long fan I have decided to pass on Robbie's attempt to clear his own conscience regarding how he claimed to be "one" with his brothers in what was a clear collaboration of all of the amazing music they joined together in creating. He collected all the publishing rights (money) in a time when his band-mates were well under the influence and didn't know any better as they were in it for the joy of the music....... not just for the money!

The blend ever of telling historic event through rock and roll.I only seen them once at Watkins Glen.I was 14 and my sister and ex bro in law took me and told my folk we were camping in Letchworh St park.Of the Dead,Alman Bros. and the Band,the Band got me going the best. Never heard of them before but the wow factor was real,plus I seen things a catholic school boy could not even imagine that weekend. Bigger than Woodstock!

@@madsjuul1350 The other side to that is Robbie holding The Band together while 3 of the others were whacked out on various chemicals (a view that none other than Ronnie Hawkins holds: his commentary about the drugging is that chemicals ruined what could have been the best band in the world). I don’t deny that Robbie has an incredible ego, but I suppose that writing some of the most classic songs of the Rock and Roll era might give it some validity. I highly recommend reading Sandra Tooze’s excellent biography of Levon for clarification of the legalities of assigning songwriting credits. It’s an impartial take, and one worth reading. I love ALL the guys, but facts are facts.

@@reneaellis9466 My initial reaction was going to have been a snarky response regarding the plethora of great classics that the others wrote after they reformed, and what did Robbie ever write? However, my response is actually to implore you (and others with that “what did Robbie ever do” or “Robbie screwed the others” mentality) to read Sandra Tooze’s excellent biography of Levon. She touches on the feud over songwriting credits and provides an excellent explanation regarding the legalities of assigning songwriting credits. It’s very well done and, most important, she does it as impartially as possible. There’s a difference between songwriting credits and performance/arrangement credits. And the fact that the others...with the exception of Levon...sold their performance credits back to Robbie is not Robbie’s fault. I used to take Levon’s side on all this, after reading his autobiography, but something just didn’t sit right about it. Turns out that the slightest bit of research turns up commentary from insiders like Ronnie Hawkins, John Simon, and Johnathan Taplin, who all agree that Robbie wrote the songs that he was credited for and, most important, that Richard/Rick/Levon were too whacked out to be helpful in this regard. Robbie, correctly, pointed out that it was the others’ JOBS to be helping with arrangements...which they were properly credited for. Now, I will say that I think that Jim Weider is every bit as good of a guitarist as Robbie. But that’s not criticism of RR. That’s praise.

However, he also said several years after The Band broke up, he was supporting a few charities, and it was nice to be able to give back. I feel like you do, I love them I especially love Rick and Robbie. I have made mistakes with money (although I did not waste in on drugs) so I'm not being judgemental. Hoskyns in his book, although plenty critical of Robbie, also call him the adult in the room and smart about business.

I've never watched a post "The Last Waltz" show. It's great to see Danko getting some six string time, and who doesn't love Levin on Mandolin with Richard on drums? A great showcase for talents which maybe in earlier shows were less obvious.

Robbie Robertson was supposed to be such a major part of the Band, and yet this tour was done without him, and The Band was still great! This tour used The Cate Brothers Band as a backing band. The Cates were twins Earl (lead guitar), Ernie Cate (keyboard), Ron Eoff (bass) and Terry Cagle (drums) who was Levon's nephew.

seen the band a few times at the ontario place forum in toronto in the mid 80's great shows! didn't give a flying f**k if robbie wasn't there.. that was his choice to take off.. plenty guitarists as good if not better than robbie out there to choose from I first discovered rick and levon in a tiny coffeehouse doing an awesome acoustic show! that was first time i seen those 2 and had no idea who or what group they were from. i reasearched around and discovered they were from The Band and after listening to several songs on the 1st dvd I bought (it was a box set of their best work) after picking my jaw off the floor I bought more cd's and collected almost all their albums and got so hooked on these guys.. so sad and disheaartened they are not around anymore.. rest in peace Richard Rick and Levon.. may god carry your souls to a better place where you guys can rock it out in the heavens ;-)

Robbie wrote most of the songs but was by far the least important musically to the group. The songs he wrote would have never been as well known without the 3 incredible voices that sang them and the musical genius of Garth Hudson.

I came home from high school one day, and my dad had left his copy of the Brown Album out. I took a look at the songs...I’d never listened to them before...and recognized “Dixie” (probably from Joan Baez’s crappy remake) from my early childhood. So...I gave Dixie a listen, then decided to start the album from the beginning. My dad got home from work, and I...blown away by what I had just listened to...asked him if that was their Greatest Hits album (being simply named “The Band”). He laughed and said “No”; it was merely their second album and that he wore out 4 vinyl copies when it first came out. It’s been a 40 year love affair between myself and their music since. I have bought every book written about them, and I HIGHLY recommend Sandra Tooze’s excellent biography of Levon. Once Were Brothers is a GREAT watch as well. I got to see them in Chicago in April of 96. One of the greatest nights of my life.

@@grant5603 Richard had a very soulful voice, but so did Rick. I have a problem when someone points out that Levon, Richard etc. was the soul of The Band. They were ALL the soul of The Band. Without Robbie songwriting there would not be all the wonderful songs, and without Rick, Richard and Levon singing those lyrics, it would not be the same, and it would not be the same without Garth's musical genius.

Levon Helm pulled out of the 1966 tour with Bob Dylan to go work on an oil rig. Robbie was the one to invite him to Woodstock after that gig. Enough said!
