The Banded Woodpecker | WILDLIFE SINGAPORE BIRDING | 4K

The Banded Woodpecker (Chrysophlegma miniaceum), formerly known as Picus miniaceus, is a medium-sized woodpecker species found in various parts of Southeast Asia, including countries such as Malaysia, Indonesia, Thailand, and the Philippines. Belonging to the woodpecker family, Picidae, this bird is known for its distinctive plumage and drumming behavior.
Adult Banded Woodpeckers typically measure around 20 to 25 centimeters in length. They have a striking black and white plumage pattern with bold black and white bands across their back and wings. Additionally, they feature a bright red crown and nape, which contrasts with their black face and white underparts.
Banded Woodpeckers primarily inhabit forests, woodlands, and mangrove swamps, where they forage for insects, larvae, and other invertebrates by pecking and probing tree trunks, branches, and bark. They are also known to feed on fruits and seeds, particularly during the non-breeding season.
During the breeding season, male Banded Woodpeckers may engage in territorial drumming displays, which involve rapid and repetitive pecking on resonant surfaces such as dead branches or hollow trees. This drumming behavior serves to advertise their territory and attract mates.
Nests are typically constructed in tree cavities or crevices, where the female lays a clutch of eggs and both parents share incubation and chick-rearing duties. Banded Woodpeckers are cavity-nesting birds and may excavate their own nesting holes or reuse existing ones.
While the Banded Woodpecker is not considered globally threatened, it may face localized threats from habitat loss and degradation due to deforestation, logging, and agricultural expansion. Conservation efforts aimed at preserving and restoring suitable habitats are essential for ensuring the continued survival of this charismatic woodpecker species, which contributes to the ecological balance of its ecosystems through its foraging behavior and role as a cavity-nester.
