on pc barcodes mean the same thing as 'Anonymous' usernames, aka hard/impossible to identify & being recognized, or they're modders with a few alt accounts with similar names. on console I'm pretty sure it means they're tryhards that also try to hide their identity because they have alt accounts. They could just use random ass names but people like barcodes more because you come over as a tryhard / higher chance people will pvp against you, atleast that was on console

This also allows for the player to distance themselves from their actions in-game, which means they can act like shxtheads and take the fun out of the game, and still pretend like they're not doing anything wrong.
