I’m having a lot of trouble doing this with a German Bow. How do I prevent the bow from bouncing when trying to chop?

My guess would be that you may need to have the direction of the attack be more in towards the bass and keep the weight in the string for longer. You may also need to be closer to the frog of the bow where the hair tension is higher. Hope this helps!

Hello! Jacob definitely knows more about chopping then I do. However, a bouncy German bow is a common problem. The camber (curvature) of the bow causes the bounce. If you have the stick of the bow directly over your point of contact when landing, the bow can be very bouncy. I would try angling the stick towards the fingerboard or bridge (but I think towards fingerboard will be more comfortable). This angle disengages the spring of the bow. I do this all the time with French or German, especially when I need to set the bow quickly and quietly at the tip. The angling of the stick is just for the point of contact- you can smoothly transition to the stick directly above the string after landing (or not! Whatever works). I think if you combine this with a good amount of arm weight and Jacob’s advice to play closer to the frog (the bow is also more prone to bounce at the balance point compared to the frog), you may have some success.

For the "basic" stroke I try to chop on both of the highest two strings of the instrument. I find this helps get the clearest loudest sound possible!
