You are right, Bulgaria is one of the most important Slavic nations, but not for the exact reasons you mentioned. If it weren't for the Ottoman conquests, I would go as far as to say Bulgaria to be indeed the most important Slavic nation, but oh well. Anyways. Often is Russia seen as the big brother of all Slavic nations, which is only partially true. The only two things that make Russia a relevant Slavic nation are her military and her prestigeous title she formed since 1700, mainly as a big mad bear that ought neither be disturbed nor have her siblings be enslaved. Russia, as beautiful as she may be, remains otherwise merely a foresty wasteland barren and broad. Bulgaria on the other hand, well... let me tell you what Bulgaria has done for the Slavic peoples. -Helped the Romans (Byzantines) spread the Orthodox faith to the pagan Slavic lands -Created the first written Slavic language (Old Church Slavonic, of which Russian is the closest decendant), and TWO scripts for the Slavic peoples (first was Glagolitic (could be made by Greeks too however), second was Cyrillic -Constructed the literary school of Preslav, turned Ohrid from an irrelevant town to the literal center of Slavic Orthodoxy and generally developed the Bulgarian lands into the cultural center of all of slavdom -Challenged the Romans (Byzantines) multiple times and kept them at bay; before the establishment of the First Bulgarian Empire in 681 the Romans often conquered, demanded tributary of and generally subjugated Slavs in northern lands, the same however also applied to other tribes And other, more concrete events that basically add up to constitute both the defense and the creation of advanced Slavic culture, from just tribal paganist disunited clans to great cultural kingdoms of Christian faith Bulgaria is the cradle of Slavic civilization.

I feel like it is possible easily to start the same route of evolving of our nation. I'm not sure if this is often told but as to work ethic in 1880s to 1940s Bulgaria was taken with high regard with other nations. It was compared to that of the japanese people, the isolation made them very refined socially, we had similar more of less. The wars we felt were righteous but bled us dry as a small nation, it took many great people and resources, we recieved the worst outcome possible trying to gamble with it. The Soviets finished any intellectual elite that we had in any sphere ( political, army, scientific , industrial etc.) while most bulgarian ones knew personally many famous intellectual people of the era from the west. The result today for me is, the feeling that there is no point in trying on large scale as a nation anymore and the feeling of betrayal for people believe we did great things and nobody knows. Many would blame "the West" but thats lazy and its Soviet stupidity. You recieved a random view of what might it be like today compared to the past, hope it is helpful and not too random.

@Polak First I wont comment for who was who as to who made the slavs. Origin lands of the slavs were in the area of Western Ukraine, Belarus and Eastern Poland, technically the decendants of that area can claim the title of creators not just the poles even if you had Poland & Lithuania thing in the past and then Commonwealth. I dont try to spew theories of who the bulgarians are now, recently they finished a study on DNA in Bulgaria, the biggest until now with the help of British scientist I think. The result is that we have the biggest part genetically is of local people like thracians and greeks as in ancient times the Thracians were told to be the second numerous group known to ancient greeks after indians, so this is logical. The second part around 30% was slavic and asian and turkic were split. They checked specifically turkic and was around 1% or 1.5% History deal with facts and science. The first presumption of the turkic origins comes from German historians in 18th century about us beucase they knew someone came from Asia and bared the name we know now. Even today is hard to know as to what is the origin, the largest origin group in Asia at the times were either iranic or turkic. The debate is which was the first to influence the tribes and traditions from both can be seen. As history of the country demands conclusivity, turkic was picked as more likely. That was solidified as a fact in communist times with the help of SSSR. There are a lot of more theries that a simple bulgarian might believe but they are more likely to be wrong. Again that doesn't change the fact the Cyrillic comes to existence because we wanted to in 9th century and its the only script that has an exact origin. We might bear the name of a "probably" turkic tribe whos desire was to create a new nation an state, which is another topic, and chose the majority language picked at the time which was slavic, inproved it and recently started to look more into genes and seeing a bigger picture.

A few corrections though regarding the lyrics' translation: 0:29 - We are no longer a submissive Raya The Raya was a type of administrative region of the Ottoman Empire. Certain rural areas in the Balkans populated by Christians were known as Rayas in Ottoman times. 0:34 - The enemy breed It implies an insult; the Ottoman Turks are portrayed as sub human by the lyrics since the word breed usually is used for animals. No offence meant to anyone of course, this song was a product of its times. 1:08 - Let us proudly prove, brothers 1:13 - That we have broken the dirty shackles 1:16 - That we are free and not slaves You might say I'm nitpicking when it comes to these three but I would disagree, there are slight nuances in there
