About the numbers again: how did Pontus support an army of 120,000? It was not even all of Anatolia, and I can't but suspect that the 10 to 1 figures are exaggerated.
@Leo-ok3uj
@Leo-ok3uj Жыл бұрын
Not even all of Anatolia???? That would have been even less than the population of Pergamon Where are you getting your data? Cause is wrong Anatolia had around 9 million people in that era (we know it had 10 million around the 1 AC)
@shamsishraq6831
@shamsishraq6831 Жыл бұрын
@@Leo-ok3uj "Not even all of Anatolia????" What part did you not understand? Pontus in a kingdom in Northern Anatolia, and does not encompass all of Anatolia. Did you even watch the video? "Where are you getting your data? Cause is wrong" My source is just fine, thank you. "Two Thousand Years Economic Statistics: Population, GDP at PPP, and GDP Per Capita; Years 1 to 2012 Volume 1: by Rank" by Alexander V.Avakov estimates the population residing within the borders of modern Turkey to be 6.866 million. Now keep in mind that Pontus was one kingdom in Anatolia. Moreover, keep in mind that Pontus is not a tribe. Sedentary kingdoms usually do not and can not mobilize every fighting man. Finally, keep In mind that 120,000 troops don't come out of thin air. They need to be recruited, fed, and supplied. Do you see Parthians raising 120,000 men for a single battle during this period? What about the Romans? Are these states less capable in manpower and logistics compared to mighty Pontus? To keep things in perspective, 120,000 is the maximum modern estimate made for the Persian army at Gaugamela. This was the maximum amount of men the ACHAEMENID Empire could throw. The fertile Mespotamian plains supported this army. Where would Pontus pull so many people out of?

@@shamsishraq6831 From Armenia, the full half of Anatolia that joined him against Roma, the Bosphorus, Colchis, the city states in Thracia, he easily had around 4 million people at his disposal, 120’000 is even less than a 1/30 of all his population in an era when it was possible to mobilize even 1/10 (not recomendable but hypothetically possible). And the Achaemenid comparation is dumb, there has been almost 300 years since Gualgamela, there was a lot of advancements and developments in logistics since then
@shamsishraq6831
@shamsishraq6831 Жыл бұрын
@@Leo-ok3uj I've never seen someone so confidently ignorant. "From Armenia, ... hypothetically possible." Even if I assume that all those estimations are correct, even if I assume that Mithridates can carry off this extraordinary mobilization, do you really want to believe that his allies will do the same? If mobilizing 1/30th of the population was so easy, Parthia (a contemporary power, btw) would raise 150,000 soldiers for their crucial battles with Rome, no? Ptolemaic Egypt should have been able to raise 120,000 soldiers in this estimation (yes, you assumed that the Mithridatic coalition had the same population as EGYPT). Show me where those armies were when they were literally fighting for the survival of the dynasty. Your 1/10th figure is applicable for tribes. You forget that Pontus is not like the Marcomanni or Cantabrians. "And the Achaemenid...logistics since then" No no, go ahead, delight me. Tell me what logistical improvements had been made in those 300 years. Don't forget to inform me about all the contemporary battles where the Romans and the Parthians (massive juggernauts compared to Pontus) raised 120,000 soldiers in ONE battle. This number only became somewhat common in the region (Persia, the Middle East, and the Mediterranean) after the 18th century but go on, have a try. I know you're pissed because I merely questioned the 69th Roman victory with 10-to-1 odds but maybe you should not believe all Roman records.

Is that Cotta related to Lucius Aurunculeius Cotta who died in the attack of Ambiorix of the Eburones in Belgica in 54 bc? I know same Gens, but perhaps his father or uncle or even brother? Only 20 years apart.

10:00 but why were all those soldiers OUTSIDE the walls? were they somehow unaware that a 120 000+ strong army is moving towards them? That's what I call terrible (0) situational awareness.

Harsh, blunt and yet useful bit of advice - hire a narrator and stop flashing yourself in vids if you want to get to the league of History Marche or K&G)

Thanks for the suggestion. I'm not a large company so hiring a narrator is not possible. And I think the in-person segments add a personal touch. I've done it since I started this channel. It's just me doing all the writing, recording, editing and animation.

I have a question and I hope you will se my comment. Wikipedia says that “Having made his way to Nicomedia, Cotta watched in frustration as Mithridates marched on taking Nicaea, Lampsacus, Nicomedia and Apameia, all major cities in the region. But I don’t understand the following thing: Having made his way to Nicomedia refers to Cotta, but after the battle of Chalcedon he was still under siege until Lucullus came to rescue him, so how could he be in Nicomedia?
