as long as the Teutonic Order loses the "whole" affair should be well covered here on yt oddly enough the same doesn't apply to teutonic victories and no videos whatsoever about for instance the Battle of Streva, 1348, Battle of Rudau 1370, Battle of Siritza 1501 or the Battle of Lake Smolina 1502 and just 1 for the Battle of Konitz 1454 .....a gaming video.....and, toootally unexpected, it lets the Teutons lose.....

Honestly it just illustrates how important proper discipline is with an army, despite the terrain what should have been an easy victory was lost due to poor discipline and morale You could have the best soldiers and equipment in the world, but if they all care significantly more about themselves than the army as a whole, you’re gonna have some big problems
@Acid_Viking

I'm imagining that the native levies had very different reasons for being on the battlefield, and were less invested in the conflict, than the crusaders were. There may have been limits on how much discipline the crusaders could realistically have expected from that unit type.
@PudgyFat

Not even just discipline, but just having sound tactics makes all the difference. I’m no medieval warfare expert, but anyone who opens with charging all their cavalry before even letting the foot soldiers set the line deserves to lose. Amazing video! One thing to point out is at 2:25 you said "kunigas" which translates to priest, what Mindaugas actually was was a "kunigaikštis" which translates to chieftain, duke or something similar to a warlord, later on he bacame a king or "karalius".
@baltulielkungsgunarsmiezis9714
@baltulielkungsgunarsmiezis9714 Жыл бұрын
Traditionally kungas means lord/king in latviešu language. Karalis originally meant something more like emporor since Karl- is the name of the grate frankish Emporor (you might know him as Charlemagne). Ou the titules are so messed up...
@flamingas
@flamingas Жыл бұрын
Kunigas means priest in modern Lithuanian, however this only came to be after the christianization of the country. Before that the position of the chieftain and the head priest was the same and thus shared a name - kunigas. Kunigaikštis was introduced later around the 19th century in order to distinguish between the past pagan chieftains and contemporary christian priests. You can even see it in the etymology of the word, as kunigas comes from old german kuni(n)g meaning king - a political position.

Well, few reasons for that. 1. Crusaders are exaggerated these days by political and ethnic bias. 2. A large portion of the Livonian army were equally armored since they were tribesmen as well. So while the Crusaders had the advantage when it came to equipment and training, they were still heavily outnumbered and outflanked when their auxillaries fled the battle. And when panic strikes it spreads like a disease.

They didn't have leather for armour. Its not mentioned in the sources. The only armour they are confirmed to have in 13th century is maille and lamellar or scale, call it however you want. Balts are confirmed to use leather armour only in late 14th century onwards when they became christian for the most part. The german order, on the other hand, could have used leather. It was often worn by wealthier individuals on top of maille. It was treated in a way it would be rigid and protective. It wasn't light and had the same role as plate armour parts which were starting to become popular on some parts of the body. Hell, even when plate armour reached its meaningful existence in late 14th century, leather versions of it were still being worn.

@@shrekas2966 Hold your horses, the balts didnt become cristian in the 14. century. The peace treaties concluded that they had to go to church but that doesnt make you cristian especially when all the clergy speak latin and german and thus you have no idea what the hell the churches doctrine even is. A majority of baltic people where cristian only in the 16. century when the protestands in their reformation and the chatolics in their counter reformation finally realized that it would be a good idea to preach to the people in a language they can actually understand.
