It's been years since we were there as part of the 125th series. So cool to see that the Park has allowed the restoration of some of the original entrenchments. A big Thank You to the Yella Hammers that hosted these few boys from Washington State.

It’d be really cool if more state parks could have reenactors film something like this to help people understand the battle better

My wife's Great, Great Grandfather Captain Jacob Ruger fought in this battle. He was with the Illinois 76th Regiment, Co H. His unit was mostly men from Kankakee Co, IL. He also participated in the battles of Vickburg and Jackson. Apparently, at some point after this battle his unit was sent to Galveston, TX and was involved in the freeing of the last of the slaves. He was mustered out on July 22, 1865 in Galveston a little more than a month after Juneteenth.

@@johnhorne2012 Very Cute. But the information is readily available in the Regimental History and in his Obituary. My only supposition was their last engagement was in Alabama. Why was the unit mustered out in July of 1865 in Galvaston unless there would have been a reason for them being sent there. One other thing to note is at that time lower ranking officers were voted for by the men in their unit. He became their Captain very early on in the units history after joining as a private.

When (month, day, year) and where (what state and nearest town/city)This is something that should be in this video! (early April 1865, but this battle probably happened on the 9th) (Near Mobile, Alabama; part of the Campaign to Take Mobile) Historical context: > 09April,1865 was also the same day Lee surrendered to Grant!!! In fact from my understanding that if this charge was on the 9th, it was AFTER Lee Surrendered! >> 12April,1865 Mobile Finally Fell (it had been isolated by the Battle of Mobile Bay from the sea, and slowly encircled). >>> President Lincoln was killed 15April, 1865.........

It's in Spanish Fort, Alabama. I just went there last night. For the first time. Got lost for over an hour at night, saw some weird orangeish red flashes of lights in the sky, and had coyotes steadily getting closer to our position., not to mention that place looks surreal at sunset with light fog covering the ground. 10/10 would recommend.

Despite what some people say the South needed the slaves for labor. For many in power this was the main reason they decided to break away, economics. The North despite what many think did not fight for freeing of the slaves. They fought to maintain the union of states. Lincoln said if he could keep the union he would allow slavery, but if he could keep the union and free the slaves he would. In fact several states that stayed in the union were allowed to keep slaves even after the Emancipation proclamation which affected only confederate states.

They don't tell you about the atrocities committed there by black Union troops against unarmed Confederate soldiers who had already surrendered. I know for a fact that this happened because a black Union soldier was going to shoot my great-great-grandfather who had been taken prisoner. However, as luck would have it, a white Union officer from Ohio whacked the black Union soldier over the head with the butt of his revolver and saved my great-great-grandfather's life. My great-great-grandfather, Benjamin H. Bounds, was with the 4th Mississippi Infantry Company F "Sons of the South". He was born in Calhoun County Mississippi in 1840 and died in Texas in 1911.

Atrocities? That just seems a little extreme, considering the circumstances overall. How many unarmed slaves were tortured?
@Marcfj

@@blakesutton6371- So, if I understand you correctly, you're implying that because a certain group of people were tortured, it justifies the atrocities committed by them against another group of people. Sorry, but you're simply leaping to a wild inexplicable conclusion without establishing any legal or moral justification for it.

Most of our understanding of this conflict has been deliberately obscured or outright falsified. It's sad.

@@seamusmoran4776 - The argument that the North went to war against the South to free the slaves is sheer bunk. Did the nations of the world unite and put an end to the butchery that took place in Rwanda?
