the roman flag is not the one the romans had at that time . the flag in the video belongs to Paleologus which consisted the last dynasty in the eastern Roman Empire until the fall of Konstantinopole in 1453.

Nice video! I'm just afraid displaying the battle as a fight between largely Byzantine infantry force and Seljuk horse archers is incorrect. The formation of 3 divisions to the front and 1 to the rear was a classic textbook formation for cavalry! The source seem to be silent about the Byzantine infantry. We just know they did play a role in the siege and in the defense of the camp before the battle. In battle the Byzantine infantry was supposed to form a large square in order to defend against cavalry! The cavalry would either be deployed in front of the infantry square when on the offensive or inside the square when acting defensive. For all that we know from the narrative of Attaliates the second Byzantine battle line left the field without much fighting and casualties. They would amount of about a third of the cavalry force. Another point is that the Tagmata or Allagia (as Attaliates called them) were said to be with the second army and not with the Emperor. Another point is that the formation described in the sources would be a formation of up to 5000 cavalry. Larger armies would have a second battle line with two or four divisions or even a third battle line!

Byzantine should have won this battle, Romanos had been abandonned by his troops who though he was dead, and betrayed by his generals who fleed the battlefield.

The actual army mastered by Romanos IV was between 80,000-100,000. He left 20,000 in the Balkans in case the Norman attacked and took 60,000 with him to Armenia.
