I can see many ordinary military incompetence being covered by excuses, but if what really happened was a normal battlefield defeat, it would be difficult to turn this into a story of an entire cohort switching sides without some guy trying to defend his honor. That and the fact that Jugurtha's quote about Rome seems to have been recorded by a contemporary (as opposed to a writer generations down the line) makes me believe the events played out similar to the story.

makes you wonder if the Romans decided to settle Germania into a province after Germanicus' "revenge", would Teutoburg have been revered as much?
@krankarvolund7771 Жыл бұрын
Probably yes, first, they were all killed, it's a bigger impact than bribing several cohorts and letting the rest escape. Second, Teutoburg happened during the reign of Augustus, one of the most well-known roman emperors, Suthul happened in the period that is often ignored between the Second Punic War and Ilius Caesar, so it had been forgotten with the rest.

I'm not a conspiracy theorist or into 'alternative history' nonsense but the 'revenge' of Germanicus always seemed like a Pyrrhic victory to me and i'm really not sure that those victories against Arminius were all that decisive considering Arminius was able to field full armies against the Macromani shortly after his defeats by Rome.

I think it would be not. Much of the today fame of the battle comes out of nationalist propaganda in the 19th and 20th century (and bevor) and of course "anti-imperialistic" sentiments in newer times. Arminius is a good tool to sell your own agenda, so to speak (whil ignoring mostly the very nasty aspects of his actions). That the "freedom" of Germania Magna was "safed" was a big selling point to make this battle big (which was by far not the worst defeat of a Roman army, not even against a Germanic foe). Take away all this "freedom" and "savior of Germany" stuff, and Arminius would surely be praised by some, but to a much lower degree. So the battle would be remembered, too - but I think less than lets say Cannae.

In my opinion Arminius was far better general who got better results despite being in a worse situation, he managed to unite the scattered Germanic into an organized fighting force, compared to Jugurtha who had the luxury of working with a strong, unified kingdom. He fought the Empire under Augustus, while Jugurtha fought a decaying republic. Yet still Arminius destroyed three entire legions at Teutoburg, and then carried out a seven year long campaign against the Romans, ultimately if not winning, then at least surviving the war; compared to Jugurtha who had a far less impressive initial victory, and exploited Rome's weakness to avoid trouble, then got crushed in a much shorter time when the senate finally got their act together. Not diminishing Jugurtha's achievements here, but while he may be the better politician, his Germanic counterpart was arguably the better military man. Edit: Jugurtha was far more comparable to Mithradates in my opinion, being just a few decades apart and in a similar situation of expertly exploiting Rome's political weakness while losing most field battles against the Republic.
@Zakariya3603 Жыл бұрын
Jugurtha would have nearly crushed Marius and Metellus at the Muthul river were it not for his bad infantry which couldn't cope with the Roman one, the same Marius later easily defeated the Cimbri and Tetutons at Aquae Sextiae and Vercellae. Arminius's Tetutoburg was a classic forest ambush done a million times before him by everyone from the Sumerians to the Boii tribe in Silva Litana, the moment he faced a competant general like Germanicus on an open field he was absolutely destroyed and his army easily scattered despite having a numerical and technical advantage.

Performing hit-and-run tactics in a dense forest that limits Roman maneuverability has advantages over the terrain Jugurtha fought on.

Haha, good god no. Arminius won an ambush, then lost every battle and got assassinated. He didn't destry three entire legions, of the ~13000 Romans at Teutoberg over 5,000 made it back. MANY became evocati in the coming wars, re-enlisting to get revenge. He then got his people, and the allied tribes, beaten to shit so badly they wouldn't revolt again until the Marcomanic Wars, remaining client states of Rome for over 150 years.

Wait ?? You are a channel promoting History, and I enjoyed your videos until now. But did you just depicted Jugurtha as a sub-saharan black ? Because if it is so, it’s entirely wrong, the People of North Africa, were not, and Are not blacks, there are black sub saharan minorities whose ancestors came and were brought up, but we never were black. Whether we are from Berber (the autochton people speaking an afri asiatic language loosely related to semitic languages such as Hebrew, Arabic, Aramaic etc), Arab or other origins. The vast majority of North Africans have Middle Eastern-Mediterranean facial features, with a minority of blacks and a minority of very white. I write this because even if I am not a Berber originally, I am tired of Black washing and people trying to steal our History, know that between North Africa, and the lands inhabited by Black African, there is a 2000 km desert, very difficult to cross before the invention of modern means of transportation, bearing any mass migrations, mass demographics that sub-saharan Africa never had, due to its tropical, equatorial climate, adding the 2000km of arid, dry, hostile desert. I am tired to read articles and people telling me that I don’t belong to my country Tunisia, which by the way was called Africa until the 17th century, when people used to refer to « Africans » or « Africa » before that time, they meant Tunisia and our forefathers. In a way as a Tunisian, if I was a douche, I could say that I am even more African than all Africans. Wake up people, Africa isn’t just Black, and Black peoples in Africa have there own great History. Black skin is not an identity, there are no « Blacks » or Africans, there is different countries, Nations, Peoples, Cultures, Languages, Ethnicities who differ greatly with one another. As for North Africa, our History is mostly Mediterranean-Eastern. I am sorry if I may seems a bit salty, but I am sick, of reading things and people telling me that in the order of things I shouldn’t be in my country, that I don’t belong here, while I was born there, lived in it, love it, by all ways possible, and strongly identify with its Land, Light, Sea, Air, Beauty, Sun, History, Greatness. And seeing a black Jugurtha, in fact implies and support the pseudo afrocentric racist thesis of a Black North Africa. Now know, Carthaginians were not black, Hannibal was not Black, Ancient Egypt was not black except for the 25th dynasty, Cleopatra was not Black, Jugurtha was not black, Berbers were not and are not Black, Arabs were not and are not Black, Ottomans were not Black, Romans were not Black, Andalusians, Moors, Greek, Italian, Balkanic renegates brought to North Africa were not black. I've been watching your videos for quite some time now and I really do enjoy them! I'd like to make a suggestion about audio, specifically your voice overs- I would recommond investing on some acoustic sound isolation and a condenser mic (which will be set up pretty much right in front of your face), a pop filter and decent audio interface with preamps & phantom power to complement the micropone. Your voicing work is great with good use of voice inflections, pauses and so fourth, but the fact that the audio sounds very "roomy" (ambient plate reverb) detracts from your otherwise clear and concise speech. If you are living in a temporary living space, the sound isolation panels can be attached to poster boards which are subsequently attached with 3m tape (or something similar) which can be easily removed and provide a non permanent flexible soultion. Free resources are avaible for best practices for isolating reverb, but a good practice is any large flat surfaces should have sound deadening, such as large open walls and ceilings, and sound traps placed in corners to prevent sound reflecting around the room. Just my two cents on the subject and I hope it is something you may consider in the future. Again, thanks for all the quality content.

By this point in history, decimation was almost completely gone. It was extremely rare by the Late Republic.
@Archangelm127 Жыл бұрын
@@Nick-hi9gx I didn't realize. One could see that as a parallel to the moral decline on display here. Not to advocate for mass murder, mind.
@Nick-hi9gx Жыл бұрын
@@Archangelm127 Well, it was more that they had figured out that more often than energizing the troops by shaming them, it broke their loyalty to their commander. For instance, during the Marian-Sullan Civil War, Cinna (Marius' successor of sorts) was about to order a decimation of one of his legions because they refused to fight against Sullan forces, so they killed Cinna. Many then joined Sulla. When Lucius Licinius Lucullus almost decimated his forces in Anatolia for losing to Tigranes' men and then turning a bit mutinous, he realized that would sap their morale, so instead he had a fustuarium, like a mini-decimation of the leaders of the mutinous sentiment. Basically, people being beaten to death by their colleagues, but not at random, not every 10 people, but targeted at ringleaders. A much more effective practice in most cases.
@krankarvolund7771 Жыл бұрын
I was also expecting each time he said that the army was taken back in hand "and ordered a decimation" XD But now that I think about it, it's true that when Crassus did it during the Servile Wars, everyone was shocked that he would reinstate such a dated punishment ^^

Great content. BUT...no offence, the video's title makes a poor analogy. The Roman disaster at Teutoburg precipitated a complete change in military policy for the Early Principate. The Battle of Suthul was a setback, but the territory was eventually turned into a province and would be a stalwart part of the Empire for 400 years. But I get it, more "clickable."
@alex_zetsu9 ай бұрын
But number of Romans killed, assuming you take the face value of the Roman writers, it was basically the same as Teutoburg. I mean none of the contemporaries called it that (obviously) but just in the casualties they report vs what Varus is said to have lost it's basically the same. Of course after losing between 20K to 30K depending on which Roman historian you asked (probably on the lower end of that estimate), the Romans wouldn't give up Africa. Africa. Sicily, Campania, and Egypt were the breadbaskets of the Roman Empire so letting it go would be foolish, they needed either direct control or at least a client kingdom there.

i like your vids but i don't understand why you depict jugurtha and the other numidians as black , even though there are clear depictions of him from taht time that invalid your depiction of him. even depicting him as deeply dark skinned is innacurate , as he was no moor (in other words a western berber , the ones that their name translates to black) or a gaetuli. can i know the reason why you do this ?

Moor doesn't mean black, moor is taken from the original word "maure/mauri", the mauri people are the people of the kingdom of Mauretania in nowadays Morocco, it is said that the name Mauretania has punic roots and it means the western land, just like the name of Morocco today in arabic, arabs call Morocco "Al-maghreb" which literally means the west.
