Exactly. He is American. Quite different from what Gu is doing. Quite different from the other athletes mentioned in this segment because China doesn't allow dual citizenship. You're missing some key points. People aren't upset about any of the athletes mentioned, except for Eileen Gu. China does not allow dual citizenship, so although she always evades the question, she had to have renounced her American citizenship in order to represent China. Also, China is involved in things the rest of the world does not approve of, ex. human rights issues. People see Eileen Gu as a traitor for those reasons. It was a lucrative decision for her and people don't buy the "I wanted to represent my heritage". The other important point is that other athletes who have represented other countries did so when the either didn't make the U.S team or when they were allowed dual citizenship. The Dutch and Italian governments allow dual citizenship and the athletes didn't have to swear allegiance to a country flawed with many human rights concerns.

this is politics at its worst, as usual. I was at the 84 Olympics all the athletes were very kind and respectful and had a great time of it. sitting at a table with all people from different cultures sharing we had interrupters to keep the communication and interaction going, and it was fantastic. when it was time to compete the energy changed to focus and perform and do their best. never was it hostile. I learn from speaking to these world class athletes that they were competing with others that many times were sharing the same track or in the case of kayaking same technical river etc. A gal from Romania asking if this was my first Olympics I said yes she goes We are human beings first and all the rest is politics. Seamus, who qualifies for Ireland through his paternal grandparents, competes in the snowboard halfpipe and was the flag bearer for Ireland at the closing ceremony in Sochi, and at the opening ceremony in Pyeongchang. Born in New York, Sarah Escobar is competing in the women's alpine skiing event at this year's games on behalf of Ecuador, making her the first female Winter Olympian in the country's history. Ireland is free, who cares if an Irish-American switches. Though if I'm being completely honest I think its a little messed up to live, work, train and use the incredible resources in the US only to switch teams at the last second. I bet if athletes who switched weren't allowed to reenter the US after switching then very few if any would be willing to do it. And hey, if you think you can represent China instead of the US then maybe go ahead and live, work, and train there instead. Same with any athlete of other countries.

Then they work in the USA and make contributions mainly to the US economy. Does that count as switching at the last second? I think that as long as the laws allow, the talents should be free to move. Eileen will definitely make the freestyle ski more popular among the Chinese youth. It will be good for the sports and the sports brands, among which most are the US brand. Jenise Spiteri was also born in San Francisco and she represented Malta, a country where her paternal grandfather immigrated from... Yet, there are no backlash against her decision. In fact, there are many athletes that do the same thing and the media doesn’t criticize them. Are people criticizing Eileen because of her decision or simply because she is representing China - a country that Americans don’t like? Athletes have to decide which country they want to represent three years prior to the Olympic. At age 15, I don’t think Eileen knew how good she would be three years later. So just like the others, she decided to increase her chances by representing China. So what’s the difference between her and the others that did the same thing? This girl trained for years and at the end of the day, she is just trying to compete and do her best. It’s her choice and not everything has to be about politics.

Well it’s the motivation. Other athletes representing other country for an opportunity to compete, as they may not be selected for the American team. Eileen, or whatever she changed her name to, received millions being spokesperson for loads of Chinese brands. China, a country sees Olympic as an tournament to show of its social prowess, and see its athletes as soldiers of the nation more than individual sportsman, is a weak winter sports team. She’s well aware that she is going to represent a national assertiveness, by joining. Other athletes may join non-American teams, but first of all, they don’t need to quit American citizenship, and second of all they represent themselves before the country, and third of all, they don’t get this amount of privilege and cash. She made deal with the government -I know this because China doesn’t recognize dual citizenship and there is NO path to become Chinese citizen for foreign nationals. It was her competition, but her competition has become a propaganda for a power that is at odds with her country. She allowed an adversary of our ideology to use her to advocate their ideology. This is what’s wrong about it. Many Chinese-Americans have faced similar situations, but many didn’t cross this line. If she competes for America, she won’t get this much media attention or contracts. Once someone receives this profit and privilege, and the entity that offered conditions for this profit benefits from this person, it’s a collusion with mutual benefits. Normally there’s no issue for Americans to represent other nations, but this is an exception to get our heads around.

@@danielx40 How do you know that her decision was motivated by the endorsement deals and not the opportunity to compete? She would've received many endorsement deals regardless of the country she represents. She was receiving endorsement deals even prior to her olympic appearance. There are literally 3 white American on the Chinese hockey team, yet no one is criticizing their decision to represent China for money. Why is there a double standard? Even if her decision was motivated by money, what's wrong with that? Isn't that what capitalist America taught us? Tom Brady left the Patriots to play for the Buccaneers, because he wanted more money. Everyone thought he betrayed the Patriot; however, can we blame him? The career lifespan of an athlete is very short, they should make money while they can. Chinese Americans are always told to go back to China; however, when they do, they receive backlash. Also, I'm not sure if there are many Chinese Americans that faced this dilemma, because not every Chinese American is connected to their Chinese identity/culture. Unlike many Chinese Americans, Eileen was raised by her Chinese grandma, she speaks fluent Mandarin, and she spends 1/3 of her time in China. She is obviously very connected to her Chinese roots. On the other hand, Nathan Chen doesn't even speak Chinese. He may not feel connected to his Chinese heritage and that's okay. It makes sense that he never considered competing for China. At the end of the day, this girl is just trying to compete in the sport that she loves. Does a country winning one more or one less medal really matter? I personally watch the Olympics to support the athletes that I like - not the countries. I am also happy that they receive millions of dollars in endorsements, because they worked hard for it. You can say China is using Eileen as propaganda, but isn't the U.S. also using American athletes as propaganda to foster patriotism?

@@christyk97 I was watching an American You Tube talk show called "Crouder Talks" or something like that where the host criticized Eileen Gu, as a "stupid dumb girl." It was an all male show and I was able to feel the extreme hate coming from these guys...not from patriotism for their country, but more like an extreme hatred for all young women who are smart, pretty, and can make more money than they do. I stopped watching it once the host started to mimick a fake Asian accent, assumed that Chinese women still have foot bindings and mixed up the Japanese Yen as the Chinese currency. But as a white Caucasian Canadian young woman (21 yr old) I really took offense at the male chauvinist PIG display of the all male participants. It also seems female athletes take more hate than male athletes who decide to do their own thing as a lot of these media outlets, even when externally hosted by a woman journalist, her script may still be prepared for her by a male dominated backroom. I hope Eileen Gu, gets to do her own thing. If she is trying to make China and the U.S. less adversarial towards each other through sport...then that is a good thing. The alternative is to become enemies all the way until we nuke each other off the face of the Earth...I feel sorry for people who refuse to accept that relations can change for the better. These are the same people who will wake up in the morning and assume today will be just as bad as yesterday. -Diane, Vancouver, Canada. SaFE19/22 12:45 am

Her story is wholesome heart-warming to me millions of times better than this ABC video. The same goes for Nathan Chen's amazing success and all other American Athletes in this Winter Olympics. Regardless of an individual's nationality, nothing takes away every athlete's hard work and undying family & friend's support & sacrifice. It is a boring story for a broadcaster such as ABC.
