It was always glaringly obvious that there is absolutely nothing to be gained from making trade more difficult with your no1 trade partner, especially if you already have a trade deficit with that partner. In the UK this simple argument didn't seem to sink in, whereas on the continent we all sat and watched this tragedy unfold, shaking our heads in disbelief at the sheer stupidity of the anti-Brussels arguments that did convince a majority (straight bananas, ban on doubledecker buses, bring back blue pasports...)

I'm working for companies that trade fruits and vegetables in large scale (mostly to supermarket chains). Time is everything here. There is stuff that is only fresh for a very limited amount of time like strawberries, raspberries, avocados, apricots, asparagus, ... There is stuff that only grows in southern Europe because of the weather condition and then is transported through Europe to the customers. Just a one day delay (or uncertainties in when the goods actually arrive) causes problems here, so the whole process is totally optimized. And yes, you might be able to produce all these fruits and vegetables locally as well in any season of the year when using green houses - but this will be more expensive to produce so it is more expensive for the customers. And even then there is the problem of labour shortage since the farmers don't find enough domestic workers.

She said stock waisted because of paperwork and delay, she said there is a certain type of fish she can't sell anymore, she said a shipment late a full day because of the lorry stuck at the border, she said it was the 4th call from customers on that day who didn't get their order in time, she said they need to do paperwork instead of business. Even if driver shortage would be the problem: you probably heard already that there are not enough drivers in the country because of Brexit, what caused the petrol shortage. @Zoltan Boros, yes, stock could be waisted but that is why no one is trying to export fish. She is not in that aspect of the fish selling business. She buys fish and sells to local restaurants and hotels. Because none are being exported she can now buy fish without competition from Portugese and Italian exporters that pay more. You say 'that there are not enough drivers in the country because of Brexit' as France and Germany are short of drivers is this because of Brexit also? As Poland need twice the number as the U.K. does this mean it is twice the Brexit effect in Poland?

@@jocelynstephens7058 She cannot export the fish, because she buys from the fishermen and sells on into the local market. To export she would basically have to open another business. Add in the fact that Portuguese and Italians are not exporters, they are importers and buying direct from the fishermen. So, there is no opportunity for her. The driver shortage across Europe is caused by less people joining due to poor wages and conditions. Britian used to get a lot of drivers from the EU, but now, because of Brexit, they are not allowed to enter.

@Martin Webb, correct, but did she say that she was dumping fish? Did she say that anyone was dumping fish? I think she was saying - if you don't get them to the consumer in time then they would have to be dumped and that is why no one wants to risk sending them into the EU because of possible delays. She also said that the Portugese and the Italians pay extra for the same fish but now no one wants to risk it she can buy at her lower prices - nothing is going to waste. Her problem is filling orders.

I admit, I had a morbid curiosity to see what would happen if a country left the EU, because I was tired of hearing people talking about leaving in many countries. But it’s so much worse than I imagined. Not a single party in the parliament in my country has leaving the EU on the agenda anymore. I also run a small business and used to buy most of my ingredients from the UK, because they were the most trustworthy vendors and cheapest for my particular branch business. It became unaffordable the instant Brexit became a reality. I now buy my ingredients from Germany, Spain and Romania.

The tide is slowly turning against the hard line Brexiteers. I am hearing more and more people who used to boast about how they voted to leave are now claiming the voted to stay, they seem to think that after seven years people will forget what they used to say. If as the lady says things start to get worse because of Brexit and shortages begin to increase the age old English characteristic of finding somebody to blame, except themselves, will begin to grow. They will look for a culprit and as immigrants can't be blamed for shortages they will focus on those they believe lied to them. As right wing media fear their readership and viewers turning (it will impact their advertising revenue) they will slowly look to throw the blame from themselves and onto others and those others will be those who led the Brexit campaign.

When we negotiated the Brexit deal we had no professional negotiators directly involved. Let that sink in. Brussels sent in some of the best veteran negotiators in the world. @A definitive Rant, I did hear her say about things being rejected because of the wrong colour paper or written in the wrong colour ink, but I think that you will find that she was talking about other companies that export to the EU and nothing to do with imports. So if 'entering the country' is you saying that you live somewhere in the EU then you are correct, but for importing anything into the U.K. there are no restrictions from the EU yet. In fact she did say how the Portuguese and Italians pay more for British fish and that she pays less and gets what they don't. For her, she is not complaining about sales, she has difficulty with having enough van drivers and is getting fish at a better price. I would call that a Brexit bonus.
