Lol bro, she’s BOTH of those things as the popular mean girl and the weird kid who can’t socialize. No one is “hEAdCAnoNiNg” ANYTHING about her AT ALL as Azula is both of those things because she was BORN vicious, cruel, and evil. They made a MASSIVE point of this that Azula was just born evil on the show. As she’s been trying to kill Zuko for the longest. Alongside her Father as well. It’s just that Azula realized that she can’t get out of it seeing how she’s so obsessed with war and suffering, but she was born naturally sadistic, unlike her brother Zuko. Zuko grew up in the same environment as Azula and he’s not a sadistic, he grew angry due to Ozai’s manipulation but he wasn’t born evil unlike Azula who loves seeing the pain and suffering of others. Azula was born pure evil and her surroundings made her worse OR arguably made her more control of her viciousness. Azula never is capable of loving anyone as she was just born a monster, her mother saw it, and Iroh saw it, and Ozai cherished it and valued her for evil monstrous side.

The party hosts are full of themselves as popular surfer bros, but they never did anything bad (besides through a party when their parents are away, and that's just teenage mischief). I always took the ending to show that those 4 aren't good people (yet). The good actions they do (even later in the series) are more due to their interpersonal relationships than overall morality. Even Zuko, Ty Lee and Mai still enjoy exerting power over people, which at its core is something you don't see in the Gaang. Just because they're sympathetic characters doesn't mean Zuko, Azula, and friends are good people.

This episode was influenced significantly by the film The Breakfast Club, which was used as reference material for the relationship-based plot of the Ember Island storyline. Joaquim Dos Santos humorously interjected the song "Don't You (Forget About Me)", popularly known for being played at the opening and closing of the aforementioned film, to the end of "The Beach" during the animatic phase of production. The A-Story of "The Beach", that is the plot that dealt with Zuko and the others on Ember Island, was originally intended to be the B-Story (secondary story). However, in order to flesh out some of the characters in Azula's team, the plans were changed in order to focus more on them than on Aang and his friends. The original swimsuit designs applied to Azula, Mai, and Ty Lee by series creator Bryan Konietzko stirred controversy in Nickelodeon's Standards and Practices Division, which said they were "too sexy for Nick" at an early point in production and had to be redrawn. The boat that the foursome travel on is similar to the ferry that Zuko and Iroh traveled on in "The Serpent's Pass"; the Fire Nation ferry, however, is much smaller and is drawn by a sea animal. This is the only episode where Azula shows genuine remorse. She does this when she apologizes to Ty Lee for insulting her. The torch behind Azula burns blue when she scares Chan. This is the only episode in which Ty Lee is seen crying. This is the second known time Ty Lee is labelled a "circus freak". Katara also called her that once in "The Drill". Azula's feelings about Ursa are very similar to Zuko's feelings about Ozai. Both of them believe that the parent they feel rejected by favored the other sibling more. The only difference is that Ursa never did anything to Azula even remotely similar to what Ozai did to Zuko. Katie Mattila was chosen to write this episode because of her prior experience with portraying Zuko's "angsty teen" personality while in romantic situations, as she had done in "The Tale of Zuko". This is the only episode from the entire series in which Azula kisses someone. Due to Azula being a "people person", she easily figured out the weakness of their enemy while playing kuai ball. The knocker on the door of Chan's house is in the shape of a lion turtle's head. When Zuko takes off his shirt to play kuai ball, several blushing girls start giggling over him. The exaggerated attractiveness of both Zuko and Ty Lee is typically known as "fanservice", a common facet of anime. According to the audio commentary, the beach's sand is gray due to volcanic ash, which is similar to the black sand beaches in volcanic regions around the world. The location for the volcano where Combustion Man attacked Team Avatar is based directly on a volcanic crater called Viti, which means hell, in Iceland that Bryan Konietzko visited a short time before creating the scene. A storyboard scene was shown at Anime Expo 2010 in which Combustion Man kills the two soldiers whose message to the Fire Lord he intercepted in order to prevent the news that Aang was still alive from spreading. This scene, however, was deleted from the final episode.

This is one of the most underrated episodes. We get the motivations of the behaviors of the villains, making them real people. In most cartoons there is a clear good and evil but here we as kids learned that people aren't just bad for the sake of it; they're not just stereotypes.

Yo, that campfire scene really shows how Azula lowkey cares for her crew. Like, she was the one pushing their buttons to get them to open up. Like her reactions to Ty Lee's soliloquy. You also think about how Azula knows that Zuko goes to see Iroh but Ozai doesn't say anything cuz Azula never told on him.

The game they played on the beach originated here in Brazil in the 60's as a mix of soccer and volleyball. Its called "foot volley" and we still play it a lot.

😂 Azula has not the slightest idea how to behave outside of a military setting. It's both hilarious and sad

Anyone else notice the similarities between the scenery and flow of the fight between Aang and Combustion Man in their first fight and the finale fight with Aang and Ozai. The environment is extremely similar. The fight flows very similar with Aang pulling similar tricks to block/redirect his opponents fire blasts. Using rocks as a defensive armor.

I related to Zuko so much. I felt his pain. I lived with a toxic abusive parent who I was trying to please. I was also angry at myself for the longest.

3:40 & 6:34 Fire Nation clothes are the best :) 4:10 What does a ghost say to bees? Boo bees! 10:00 I really like the part with Zuko and his past. The episode had been funny so far, so the change to the quiet/sad part is great. 11:05 The sound effect of Combustion Man's fire bending is amazing. It still gives me goose bumps. 12:58-15:25 I like Sheera's little facial expression in that end part 15:59 That last picture is wonderful :)

To be honest Zuko's group are basically military kids and have been in constant battle. So of course they would lack major social skills. I love this episode. Great reaction guys.

If the heart to heart to heart to heart at the end didn't happen, you'd just think that Azula, Zuko, Mai, and Ty Lee were a foursome of weird-ass teenagers who need to go out and hit the mall a little bit more. But it really showed that their parents have made them what they are and are the cause of their eccentricities and problems.

I cannot believe Azula's insane rizz nearly worked. This episode is so funny. The Squad ruins everyone's days at the beach, gets invited to a party, shows up to the party way too early, forces themselves in, then proceed to be absolute social menaces. And after all that, they have a group therapy session, then go back to the party to commit property destruction x4. Also, I guess I'm not the only one who thought it was kinda hot when Mai yelled "LEAVE ME ALONE!" at Azula
