Mike Meros on organ is an element to The Beach Boys live sound that has not been replicated. It seems like the current band leaders of both Brian and Mike’s bands try to stick close to the original arrangements as recorded (probably for the best), but I think Mike Meros’ added fills and improvising is really cool and keeps the songs from sounding stale.

What's weird is this is NOT the live feed, but it sounds like a tape of a live performance with perhaps Mike's vocal overdubbed and the backgrounds reinforced (very obvious 2:36 where Mike's low notes are louder than God and his mic is about five feet from his mouth, plus Dennis' fill doesn't match). I wonder what the story is with the source performance.

Almost all of their "live" performances are sweetened in post-production. The Queen Mary concert is a glaring example of what happens when you really do perform live, without proper sound production.

​@@MorningGlass55 Of course. Maybe I wasn't clear that what's odd is it appears we are hearing a live 1981 live recording with sweetening, but it's apparently not of *this* performance. So where did it come from? Maybe they did two or more takes for the show and used most of the audio from one performance but had better visuals from the other, I suppose.

Most of the instrumentation im seeing isn't even audible, yet oddly enough the organ solo seems replicated (though still not the source of what we're hearing). Vocal definitely cut in a studio, instrumentation could be live but mixed heavily in post-production. This all costs money though, and it doesnt look like they had much of a budget so, it's odd for sure

@@SeahorsesJay Well, the BBs live show having many of the instruments buried in the mix is standard operating procedure, particularly around this period. But yeah, it's odd. My best guess based on what I know of other BBs recordings is it's a live recording of a different performance (possibly the same day), with the vocals overdubbed or doubled after the fact. But who knows.

I’m pretty sure it’s live. Yeah it’s glaringly obvious that Dennis isn’t actually playing but if you pay closer attention you can see a secondary hidden drummer in the back under Dennis playing the part. They did that a lot during this era of the band since Dennis sadly was falling more and more out of his element. I get the mic thing to though but idk i feel like if it was all overdubbed then what would even be the point of the dennis stand it

Mike Loves got eye bags from bloomingdales in this, Denni's voice is shot from the partying and wild lifestyle ill always laugh at this moment in history, wish Dennis was still alive I know the band was probably tough to be in at this time but Dennis From Venice bit will always make me smile, even tho his voice is raspy and he probably was less jokey than it seems with his hurrying of bruce and waving bruce took everything in stride as always and Al's jacket is dope, I wish Dennis was still alive tho, boy what I'd give to read his memoirs had they ever been written, that man had a wild wild life. Stan said he bashed Dennis' head into a headboard. I thought either Stan or Rocky punched Dennis in the throat when they beat him up.

Which falls apart when you know that Mike was no abstainer. Back to the original question - I wonder if Dennis didn't consider Bruce a true beach boy, seeing him as an add-on that stuck.

How did Dennis's voice go downhill that fast from the year before?

In 1981 Brian's former bodyguards Stan Love (brother of Mike) and Rocky Pamplyn broke into Dennis's home and assaulted him. Stan Love took a telephone receiver and pushed it hard against Dennis' throat, crushing his larynx and nearly strangling him. Stan had heard that Dennis was giving Brian cocaine, and although he was no longer employed by Brian, he still apparently felt very protective of his cousin Brian (but apparently not his cousin Dennis), so he went to see his former co-worker Rocky and persuaded him to help him teach Dennis a lesson he wouldn't soon forget. Stan and Rocky were both arrested, tried and convicted of a misdemeanor and fined a very nominal fine. Dennis was reportedly extremely upset and the light sentences.

I’ve seen hate toward this sing elsewhere, I don’t get it… what is it, the lyrical theme that you guys hate? I think it must be nice to feel loyalty to your school (never having experienced that). I also connect to it as a metaphor… your “school” can be whatever community you do identify with… as to the music, it’s typical of early beach boys, which one would think a beach boys fan would like…
