A tribute to the brilliance of Brian Wilson....and the Wrecking Crew.

I recall seeing an interview with Hal, drummer of Wrecking Crew. He said everyone was astounded watching this 23 year old break down each piece to the musician. Hal said none of them had ANY IDEA what the finished song would sound like with the vocals and they were BLOWN AWAY when they first heard the finished song. He was amazed that B Wilson had all of this in his head ALREADY and was able to put it out there for everyone to enjoy. I thought that was a great story of how so many little pieces come together in the end to make a seamless and timeless song

He is certainly somebody extraordinary. Every person will have their own taste; their favourites and it would be very sad if everybody thought the same. For me, and it’s only my opinion, this song is amongst my top 5 songs. My choice is naturally affected by my age and also where I was; who I was; when I listened to the song or the artist. There are times; there are days when certain songs appeal to me more than others. I can say that this song affects me more when I need reminding of good times and good thoughts.

The Beach Boys had fewer hits than the Beatles, for sure. But a number of the Beach Boys hits (e.g., California Girls, Wouldn't It Be Nice, God Only Knows, Good Vibrations) individually had a much more profound impact. Brian Wilson is a genius beyond words.

This is arguably the greatest song of 60s, honestly. The fact that one song took over 200 takes before Brian thought it was perfect is amazing. Brian was like Beethoven at the peak of his career. Soaring higher and higher, then slowly cracking up due to his obsession with perfection. That mad cocktail of his talent, cracking up and his desire for perfection resulted in his 9th Symphony. Truly the best musical, vocal and overall arrangement in the history of rock in my book. A marvel really, that you can hear if you listen to it in pieces like this. I love the Beatles and they were the greatest writers and far more popular for sure, but really they sound like a garage band next to Brian's productions in 1965 and 1966. Gosh, the musical arrangement in California Girls is unbelievable and one of his many songs that remains untouched even to this day.

@Huawei is a criminal organization. : Agree -- there's no need to pit Brian Wilson and the Beach Boys against Jagger/Richards and the Rolling Stones. They're both extremely talented songwriters and groups. Yeah, the Stones are a little more "raw" and blues-oriented, but that doesn't mean their music isn't as good and worthy of recognition as the Beach Boys'.

@@utub1473 that's a literal definition you're quoting. The piece needs to be intended to be performed without instrument. The singers need to emulate the instruments themselves. In the following order: 1) Watch "The Wrecking Crew" documentary; 2) Watch "Love & Mercy" biopic; 3) Read "Musicianship of Brian Wilson" on Wikipedia, including playing the embedded musical snippets; and 4) Listen -- don't watch a video, just listen with your eyes closed -- to "Good Vibrations" which Brian Wilson cut from "Pet Sounds" so he could spend another six months perfecting it. Mind blown. Prior to the above, I knew about the Beach Boys and had heard of Brian Wilson in only the basic sense, but wanted to dig deeper with each of the above steps. Brian Wilson was famous, wealthy, apparently humble, yet he had barely scratched the surface of his musical genius at age 22 or 23. He knew there was so much more music in his head, and he felt compelled to explore and share. So he stopped touring with the Beach Boys to focus on creating what became “Pet Sounds”.

+david james my friend David leaf worked on this as well!! Denny is a great guy,his father and the wrecking crew were and are funny creative and loyal to the artists they had the pleasure to have worked with in the studio in the 1950's thru 1970's!!

+david james He sure did. Denny is a very nice guy. Had the pleasure to meet him at one of the special screenings before the official release of the film. All of the WC musicians are for sure legendary! The new coffee table book Sound Explosion is a great partner to the movie. Lots of amazing stories and history. Didn't mean to correct you on the name. Sure it was a simple error as I'm sure you know the key folks far more than I do!

When they released the Pet Sound Anniversary CD box set, I was working as off duty Cop at a brand new Rex Center. At night I had the whole thing to my self as they finished it. I went in the Gym and put on The Beach Boys doing background Vocals to Wouldn’t it Be Nice. It was like being in the studio as they made the song. Each track was incredibly done vocals music and background. Brian Wilson was able to create a songs that would last forever

Nearly 50 years later it still sounds fantastic. From one of the iconic albums in all of rock history and to showcase the Wrecking Crew makes it more special. And now many years later in life I'll sing the words a tad different, "Wouldn't it nice to be younger....." LOL!

Thanks so much for the mix...GREAT job! When I listen to the isolated vocal and instrumental tracks, not only on this song, but many other of Brian's songs, it reminds me what a true musical genius he was as a writer / producer during the "halcyon" years.

There's Larry Knechtel on keyboards. He later played keyboards on Simon and Garfunkel's "Bridge Over Troubled Water". Then during the 70s he played bass guitar and keyboards for the group Bread with David Gates, the lead singer and songwriter of the group. Also, Larry played and toured with the country group The Dixie Chicks.

When I see all of these talented session musicians involved in the recording of this song, I still wonder how the Beach Boys did it live when I saw them in the late 70's. I guess backing recordings were used during live performances back then too.

Can you imagine presiding over all of these musicians as these tracks are being laid down:knowing that you're making one of the greatest songs of all time? The fact that old man Wilson prevented Brian and the gang from giving the credit where it's due has probably eaten at Brian for a long time.

I feel totally blessed to have lived through the sixties with all of the beautiful music in the USA and England. Although I was really a Shadows and Beatles fan The Beach Boys music really was the soundtrack of my life. My all time favorites have to be good vibrations, Darlin and I can hear music.
