Back in the day the record companies paid the BBC to get their songs on in peak time and didn't want to know the rest. They gave Peel a show when the BBC thought nobody was listening. Out of step in 1980, the BBC are just out of step in 2023. The reason the BBC failed to change was the reason why Kiss, Capital went onto thrive. Thanks the BBC!

These were the years when every John Peel Show had something new and exciting in it. That opening music promised a couple of hours of musical education .. and when The Beat session began it felt like I was hearing the best music ever made. Impossible not to dance to these tracks.

So sad to hear about Ranking Roger. The Beat was always my favorite of the Brit ska revival bands cause on their debut album they were the closest to punk. That 12" e.p. with extended versions of Tears of a Clown/Hands Off...She's Mine/Twist & Crawl is truly great. And what to say about Save It For Later? A Monster. Thanks Vibracobra, as always.

The Beat were a Great Mod-Ska Band from the Very Early 1980's! I've seen them Live in Hollywood many times @ various gigs with The Specials! The Selecter! The Brat! The Vectors! The Targets! Chardon Square! The Question? & Even? The Go-Go's! & The B-52's Before They Were Famous? Back In The Day! Very few people know this Little Piece of Musical History? Except for Some of Us? On this comment page? The Original Beat from The U.K. we are all hearing & are familiar with? In this Excellent Peel Session! Had to change their Band Name when they first arrived? & Started going On Tour in The U.S! Only because there was another Incredibly Great! & Awesome Power-Pop! & Rock"N"Roll Band! Tearing It Up! In Hollywood! & Los Angeles! Called "The American Beat" Otherwise known as "The Beat" with Paul Collins & Peter Case! Two of the Original Band Members from The Nerves! With Jack Lee! This is when "The Beat" had to change their Band Name to "The English Beat"!!
@racketman2u4 жыл бұрын
@@stevehastings5161 They only changed their name in the USA; to many of us, there was only ever "The Beat"! as we'd never heard of their American impostors. (until, sadly, long after the original band had died, and the spirit had lived on brightly but briefly in the short-lived General Public, we were then treated to the revival of TWO zombie corpses. )

Thanks for uploading. Great to hear this Peel Session. I wonder if Bob Seargent engineered the session as he went on to produce their debut LP. It's great to hear these songs in a different studio setting. The Beat were a fantastic blend of Calypso Ska, Reggae, Power Pop with Punk sensibilities. thrown in for good measure.
