One of the lead vocalists of influential Birmingham 2 tone band The Beat has died at the age of fifty-six. Roger Charlery, known to fans as Ranking Roger, joined the band at the age of sixteen. Drummer Everett Morton reminisces.

One of the best! Grew up listening to him and the beat in the early 80’s. Opened for the police in 1982. Beat outshined then that day!

He had great energy on stage with his skank dance and toasting skills. He was like a spark plug at every show just energizing the crowd! And his singing was perfect for the ska sound! Really unique! Ranking Roger will be Missed But Never Forgotten! RIP

Wow. I am just hearing of this news from this video. I have enjoyed his music since 1980 and feel so privileged to have eventually had the chance to see him perform (live in Southend) in 2017 and 2018. RIP big man! You are deeply missed.

I love it Roger was in the Audience and you couldn't keep him away or off Stage!! I enjoy so much of their work. And Hilarious in some cases. Praise GOD for him and them THX THE WOLFE

shame they never made this furor when saxa died the sax man in the beat without his sax the beat would have never sounded as good ,, rogers death is a sad loss to the music scene and birmingham as a whole

Man I'm so sad to lose Ranking Roger. He was no Rudy, I am certain! Man he was amazing, rip, my friend! This hurts. Ah, why? It sucks! Roger is gone! No! I feel awful about this, I mourn with the fans, friends and family.

Roger had a stroke last year & further tests revealed a brain tumour. Sadly, the cancer had metastasised to other parts of his body too.
