The Beatles had their first hit in 1962, came to America in 1964 and broke up in 1970. They put out their first album in 1963 and their last in 1970. They put out 12 pretty amazing studio albums in 8 years. Their style and sound was constantly developing and pushing the limits of rock music - they are considered to be the most influential band in history - their list of innovations (things they did first) in music is a long one .. there are so many things (sounds and recording techniques) we hear and take for granted today in music that you can back track to the Beatles having done first. Anyway their sound went from "Love Me Do" in 1963 to the style of "Come Together" in seven short years .. to delve into the Beatles catalogue is literally a history lesson in how todays (Rock) music became what it is. They did it at the highest level and their music still stands out today 60 years later ...

Very good, I differ in one area, the start, "Love Me Do" may have been the 1st USA hit, however, I argue the sound began with "Some Other Guy" in the late 50s, Cavern Club days, now that started the phenom, that still burns today.

Blues, rhythm and blues and little richard huge but also Carl Perkins which is actually their biggest idol. he wrote some of elvis's biggest hits blue suede shoes and more, but in rockabilly style.

George Harrison was also the first Beatle to go No. 1 as a solo artist immediately following the band’s breakup. He had a stash of songs saved up b/c Lennon & McCartney were a firewall who rejected many of George’s songs until the last few albums (he was the youngest so they thought George wasn’t ready yet). George was VERY frustrated by this and released some songs on his album “All Things Must Pass” (which includes the classic “My Sweet Lord.” For The Beatles George also wrote “Here Comes the Sun”, “While My Guitar Gently Weeps” (with Eric Clapton guitar riffs), and “Something” which Frank Sinatra called his favorite song ever. Fifth Beatle skit was hilarious. Billy Preston was called the fifth Beatle b/c he provided those bluesy keyboard riffs on their later songs just before their 1970 breakup: like ”Get Back”, “Don’t Let Me Down”, and “The Long & Winding Road.”

The Beatles weren't just an iconic rock band, they also started a cultural revolution. Their music continued evolving over time. "Come Together" was on their last album "Abby Road", released in 1969. After the Beatles broke up in 1970, all four of them had successful solo careers, and yes, Ringo sang too! George was part of The Traveling Wilburys either during or after his solo career, and Dahni Harrison (George's Son) also played in that super group. When the Beatles first came to America, a reporter asked "what would you like to see now that your here" and they said "we want to see Muddy Waters" and the interviewer said in earnest "where is that". At the time, blues was not in the limelight of popularity. It was when the British (music) invasion happened, that made the masses sit up and take note. My favorite song by The traveling wilburys was end of the line. Before they were able to finish the song and the video Roy Orbison died. They finished the video with the little rocking chair with Roy orbison's guitar in it rocking back and forth throughout the video.

Chuck went easy on the Beatles and didn't ask for money. He knew Lennon who wrote the song was a huge Chuck Berry fan and he was paying homage. All he asked them to do was record two Chuck Berry songs because he knew how many records they sold and the royalties that came from them. They broke up in a few months, but John Lennon fulfilled the commitment on his 1976 album Shaved Fish which were all covers of some of his favorite songs from the 50's including two of Chuck's. Berry was still making royalties from two songs (Roll Over Beethoven and Rock & Roll Music) that the Beatles covered in their early days.

Timothy Leary was running for president and asked John to write a campaign song for him. So that's how it started out, with "Come Together" being the campaign theme of unity. But Leary got arrested for pot possession and had to drop out of the race, and John took the song in a different direction. He turned it into a funky dadaist word salad with a hypnotic bluesy groove.

The fifth Beatle was the great keyboardist Billy Preston. He joined them on the last two albums, which included this song. So, yes, a brother was the only musician that played with them (Clapton played guitar on one song). The producer George Martin is often called the fifth Beatle because of his incredible influence with orchestral arraignments and cutting edge recording techniques. THe band was very experimental. Within a very short time they moved from the "I want to Hold Your Hand " to multi-layered montages. But you are right about the influences. Their very earliest influences were American Rock-a Billy, but once they came to America, in 1965, they fell in love with Motown. Their album Rubber Soul showed those influences. As others have said, they simply are the greatest band. The odds of four musical genius's coming together (no pun intended) in the same city and time. I was so fortunate to grow up listening to them. Actually Chuck Berry did not sue them it was a label guy. It was one lyric where Chuck sings "Here come an old flat top (police car) cruising up slowly". John Lennon sings "Here comes old flat top grooving up slowly". He made an album and gave the label rep all royalities.

John Lennon formed The Beatles! He brought Paul in. Paul brought George in, and all of them asked Ringo to be the drummer! George wrote and sang at least two songs on each album starting around 1966. I think George wrote about 33 songs. Ringo would sing one song on each album. John and Paul switched lead vocals and wrote most of the songs. Any songs off Rubber Soul (1965), Revolver (1966), Sgt Pepper's Lonely Hearts Club Band (1967) and Abbey Road (1969) are amazing. I can't begin to list them here!

There were few bands specifically writing their own material [the Beach Boys did for sure], and no one was wearing long hair...so they were already innovators before changing from pop rock/touring to studio work, which was ever changing, and as you know they kicked down the door for everyone else. They saved rock and roll from dying on the vine [which was what the adults wanted...(why do you think Elvis was Drafted? Luck of the draw? Hell no... the paranoid government wanted to stop rock and roll, it was a "commie plot...").

i consider everything up to '65 "warm up" beatles. they were young and finding their ground. "i wanna hold your hand" was from that era. their best album, many, most(?), including me, say is "the white album" ('68). they've influenced almost everyone who came after them, it seems. every rock and roll artist knows many beatles songs. they're staples. funny watching you guys recognize the hook. haha. my 3 favorite albums are the white album, sgt pepper and magical mystery tour. as with many of their later, better albums, they're albums - meant to be heard start to finish.

Seeing as your interested in listening to more of the Beatles here are some more recommendations, split into specific sounds as their discography is so vast and genre-bending. ‘Don’t let me down’ is probably a good transition from come together as they’re quite similar and have that bluesy feel. If you want straight heavy rock music I’d recommend ‘I want you she’s so heavy’, ‘revolution’, ‘Hester skelter’, ‘hey bulldog’ Some soulful songs are ‘let it be’, ‘oh darling’, ‘hey Jude’ Trippy psychedelic I’d say ‘strawberry fields forever’, ‘a day in the life’, ‘Lucy in the sky’, ‘I am the walrus’, ‘blue jay way’ George has some amazing songs like ‘something’ and ‘while my guitar gently weeps’ Overall, I think the best idea is to listen to some of the songs that have music videos on their channel as they are the most accessible and popular ones

Yeah, right on about The Beatles' blues and R&B influence. The adored American B/R&B, covered songs, and met and worked with artists whenever they could. Little Richard bragged that he taught Paul the high "WOO". Yeah, the Beatles covered Twist And Shout on their debut album, which was recorded in one day. John sang it last because he knew he would blow out his voice, and the performance is classic. Matthew Broderick lip synced to it in Ferris Bueller's Day Off. And yes, they did cover Chuck, with Roll Over Beethoven--so fun hearing it sung with a Liverpool accent. Paul McCartney on bass, and Ringo Star on drums is IMO one of the most underrated rhythm sections in rock. Never flashy or attention getting, but always exactly supporting the song without getting in the way. I often spend entire songs just listening to McCartney's melodious, bouncing bass. I love it.

I'm 54 and I listen to everything. Saw the birth of rap like some rap artists jazz classical huge prog rock metal classic rock fan. The Beatles did get influenced by 50s and 60s black artists. But for me...the most important band of the last 100 years

"In late 1969, "Come Together" was the subject of a copyright infringement claim brought against Lennon by Big Seven Music, the publisher of Chuck Berry's "You Can't Catch Me". Morris Levy, the owner of Big Seven Music, contended that it sounded similar musically to Berry's original and shared some lyrics (Lennon sang: "Here come ol' flattop, he come groovin' up slowly", and Berry's had sung: "Here come a flattop, he was movin' up with me"). Before recording, Lennon and McCartney deliberately slowed the song down and added a heavy bass riff in order to make the song more original. The case was settled out of court in 1973, with Levy's lawyers agreeing that Lennon would compensate by recording three Big Seven songs for his next album. A brief version of "Ya Ya" with Lennon and his son Julian was released on the album Walls and Bridges in 1974. "You Can't Catch Me" and another version of "Ya Ya" were released on Lennon's 1975 album Rock 'n' Roll, but the third, "Angel Baby", remained unreleased until after Lennon's death. Levy again sued Lennon for breach of contract, and was eventually awarded $6,795.00. Lennon countersued after Levy released an album of Lennon material using tapes that were in his possession and was eventually awarded $84,912.96. The album was called Roots: John Lennon Sings the Great Rock & Roll Hits."

They did everything first to create the modern music industry. As for who sang - all of them did, each of them with Beatles hits to their credit, even Ringo (“Octopus’s Garden”, “Sgt Pepper’s Lonely Hearts Club Band” (as “Billy Shears” 😆), “Yellow Submarine”)! Generally speaking, each Beatle tended to take the vocal lead on tunes they particularly wrote, often with one or more of the others singing harmony parts or adding novelty voices.

There is something really special about the period of 1960-1980 in music , so much fantastic music that we are still listening to was produced. And not in just one genre but all over. Personally I think it was a time of experimentation before labels figured through computers how to format what makes a hit song.

Ringo was the lead singer several Beatles' songs. Yellow Submarine and With A Little Help From My Friends are the biggest hits where Ringo was the lead singer. There were 10+ songs where Ringo sang lead including Octopus's Garden.

Roy Orbison was not blind. He and his siblings did have sight issues, but thick corrective glasses helped with that. Roy Orbison wore shades because he left his regular glasses in a previous US flight before boarding the next flight to the UK. Loved how the Beatles broke the stranglehold on AM radio broadcast that required all songs to be under 4-minutes long; "Hey Jude" ran 7min 11sec. Their producer was concerned radio stations wouldn't play it due to length, but it's said Lennon responded with "They will if it's us".

The copyright infringement was about the lyric "Here come ole Flattop, he come groovin up slowly" - Lennon was paying tribute to Chuck Berry with the reference. Please go back and listen to You Cant Catch Me, it is iconic early rock and roll but does not resemble Get Back in any way. I would recommend I Want You (She's So Heavy} from the same album. I'll also mention that many people thought the Beatles track Good Day Sunshine was a Motown track on first hearing. Please explore the Beatles, what they did in less than 8 years is truly remarkable. You guys are great

Any other band could’ve retired after this tune alone. For the Beatles, this is just the opener for “Abbey Road”, one the greatest albums ever made. Oh, and let’s not forget they didn’t just record ONE of the greatest albums ever made, they hammered out at least FOUR of them, in rapid succession. All of this without even considering their individual careers after they broke up. The mind reels. These guys were on a whole other level.
