The one really salient point that I think is made abundantly clear in this video, a point that I think Warren has also made on other occasions, is that, it's not the gear of the engineer that makes the difference in the quality of a recording, it's the engineer of the gear that's really matters. It's wonderfull to have all these recreations of really great gear but it really comes down to the skill of the people using that gear that will really make an impact in the quality of our recordings. Hat's off to all that were a part of this video!

I have two WA19 mics. Its the only mic I've found that got me close to that woody, percussive acoustic guitar sound you hear on many 60s records (eg think Mrs Robinson). Its one of my fave mics on guitar speakers. I used the two on different speaker types to get a mild stereo sound. And you can also create a really nice soft pingpong effect with one at the neck of an acoustic and one at the bridge, delaying the bridge by a few hundred milliseconds, just pan it slightly.

It’s great to have a reproduction of the D19, but that’s hardly the only mic the Beatles used to record Day Tripper. The D19 was used on the drum kit with a D20 on the kick. Previously a 4038 was used as an overhead, though that had mostly been retired by 1965, and the D19 was used primarily. One of the many “secrets” to the snare sound was the use of KM56 underneath the snare, which was just starting to be used in the 65/66/67 period. Vocals and guitars were recorded with tube Neumann mics (U47, U48, U67). And bass guitar was being recorded with a D20, quite a different mic to a D19. But EMI Studio was filled with proprietary gear like compressors and high frequency presence boxes, and their own tube based recoding/mixing desks. The D19 was just part of the sound. Still, it’s nice to have a reproduction. I owned two vintage D19s and they sounded quite different from each other due to age-related deterioration.

Thanks for your great and detailed comment Andy! Absolutely! I know they used multiple different mics, as you may know I co-wrote a book with Jerry Hammack and did a history of Abbey Road in conjunction with the studio! Really like the vocalist. Nice to hear his voice shining through while still being faithful to the original. In this day and age of everyone having the potential for being recognized for the unique qualities they bring to the world - so many resort to trying to sound like everyone else. The Billie Holiday approach to vocals over the past 20 years is so tiresome and a great example of a style being overused (across genres too!). It is a perfect time for people to embrace the qualities that make them unique and start singing in their own voice! This singer featured in the video seems to have that quality. Refreshing.

I like the nicely simple & direct feel to this... of course, for that true authentic 1960’s production feel, Warren should be wearing a white lab coat. I wonder if there were discussions/arguments at Abbey Road back then, with folks wanting to use ‘vintage’ mics from the 1920/30s (for that classic 5k to 300hz vibe). Personally, I’ve never 'tried' not to be clever either... not being so just comes naturally.

Don't know who invented it but these are very much like Electro Voice PL11 and RE16 style mics. What sets this kind of mic apart from typical dynamic mics (Shure SM 57/58) is the extra venting along the handle helps mitigate the booming proximity effect. When I first plugged in an RE16 I was underwhelmed while speaking closely. My impression changed when I mic'd up some instruments. The sound is more natural and being a dynamic has better isolation than condenser mics thanks to the lower sensitivity. I found many use for them. On a live (quiet) jazz gig I mic'd the kit with just one at the kick and one overhead. Amplified without sounding amplified. EV calls it Variable D??
