Ram was not critically well recieved by the music critics but I think the public liked it. I think the problem the album faced was that Lennon was in one of his angry and he was sounding off at everything from the Beatles, Paul, the stones to Dylan. He ran the album down and Paul’s music generally. It was all down to the breakup of the Beatles and the business problem they were having were the three Beatles sided against Paul. Once Lennon came out of angry period he started to say kinder things about him. For the record Ram is a top album, 2nd only to Band on the Run in his solo releases.

Flaming Pie is also one of his best

Rolling Stone Magazine was also a big part too. To this day they hero worship John, and at the time saw him a a pied piper for the hippie movement and the real revolutionary. He was cool and Paul was not with his safe and conservative granny music. They didn't want to give Paul any breaks, but orgasmed over the Plastic Ono Band album. Of course Lennon was brought back down to Earth after the reviews for Sometime in New York City came in, with an album that just switched from one preachy cause to the next.

I mean even if Jesus himself released that album, ain’t nobody giving it a good review

The truth is that John never got his groove back after Imagine. He had brilliant moments, but he never put out a great album again after that. Ram and mcCartney are "unplugged" albums, honest. In particular they prove that Paul didn't need a producer like George Martin to make a good album. That stands in sharp contrast to George, who needed Phil Spector to make his backlog of songs sound monumental.

During 1969-71 John, George and Ringo were heavily influenced by Allen Klein in their negative opinion of Paul and his work. I strongly recommend The McCartney Legacy volume 1 1969-73 for a thorough overview of the Ram period.

I reckon they didn't sincerely hated RAM but still were pissed off over the whole break up and Alan Klein. IMO the three others could be such bastards to Paul and for so long. Paul really did a lot of forgiving over the years. Don't also forget the head of Rolling Stone had bones to pick with McCartney and would ensure all reviews would be horrid. Jann Wenner (is that his name) was and remains an utter joke. He is the one who puts country stars into the RNRHOF. I hope Paul gets fair treatment throughout future years as the genius he was and overall top fellow with ordinary flaws just like anyone else. Ringo recently acknowledge and thanked Paul for being the work acholic without whom Sgt Pepper, Let t Be and Abbey Road almost certainly would never have come into existence. Of course, Paul was not perfect, but he had an attitude ten times better than George and John who often sulked, pampered their partners (with the latter) and could be incredibly bitchy. IMO they oved Paul deep down and would later, very late on, show that but they really owed him an apology for the way they used and sometimes abused him.

John definitely had some opinions and criticism especially because of the Klein and breakup aftermath so he was very critical of Paul’s work

Ringo later clarified that he wasn't sad for Paul and his debut album, that was just the way his face *_always_* looked.

RAM is Paul's absolute best. It doesn't touch Plastic Ono Band or Imagine...but damn, it's good.

There’s a recording of John, George and Ringo singing Ram at a party. It’s pretty crazy to hear their comments on the songs and how they knew every word

Lennon loved double 8:05 extenders so I never understood why nobody ever picked up on The only thing you done was yesterday also referred to the past, not only the song and another day likewise means typical.

I loved listening to Ram and McCartney without any outside knowledge because they are absolutely fantastic. Was a big lennon and harrison head when I finished the Beatles discography (Imagine was the first solo album I bought on vinyl) but as I matured and listened more and studied music it became abundantly clear that McCartney was the most talented member of the band. Always love a good Ram video man

I think Ram is overall a good album with some weak songs ( Monkberry Moon D, Smile Away). Even the last two suite songs (Long Haired L and Back Seat of My C) while decent, pale next to his Abbey Road side two work). I do think that Too Many People is one of his best, edgy, creative solo songs on par with his Beatle material.

You do wonder if Ringo was influenced by Jann Wenner and Klein to give such a rotten opinion at the time?

I don't think Ram is Paul's "best" album but it's certainly outstanding. Seriously I'm not really fond of Smile Away and Eat at Home - and while Too Many People is fine I dislike the first 20 seconds, it doesn't start really convincing. Ram on/Reprise is a filler ...
