The word 'Beatlemania' was used by the press for the first time after The Beatles performed on the TV show "Sunday Night At The London Palladium on October 13th 1963. It was the show which introduced them to an audience outside teenage fans and was the pinnacle of the British entertainment world. A few days later week later they recorded their single "I Want To Hold Your Hand" followed by their first overseas tour to Sweden and recorded their single "I Want To Hold Your Hand". In this packed video, we look at all of those events - and more!

Upon their arrival from Sweden to Heathrow Airport, another TV impresario would come to find out who the Beatles were. Ed Sullivan used to travel around Europe looking for acts to appear on his Sunday night variety show in the U.S. Departing from Heathrow Airport, Ed noticed a large crowd of teenagers on top of the arrivals building. When Ed asked a stewardess what all the commotion was about, she told him "It's the Beatles". Ed wondered what the Beatles were, so upon arriving back in the U.S. he was able to find out that they were a pop group taking England and parts of Europe by storm. Ed hadn't seen anything like this since Elvis Presley, so he set the wheels in motion to get The Beatles to appear on the Ed Sullivan show. 73 million viewers later, Beatlemania swept across the U.S.

"I Saw Her Standing There" from the Drop In show is definitely one of their best-ever live performances and I cherish every second of it. Ringo is absolutely on fire and I just the love the looks the other 3 are giving each other throughout the song, as to say "Wow, can you believe what that guy is doing on the drums???" It's damn-near the happiest I've ever seen them on a stage, especially George. That song was an obvious choice for the Anthology and I was glad to see it in there.

The performance on the Swedish show the Drop was my favorite show of 1963. Their live performance was amazing! My favorite parts were Twist and Shout and Long Tall Sally. At the end of the show, the Beatles, the hosts, and the audience started clapping in unison. The Royal Performance was nice too.

This channel provides fascinating insights into the Beatles that go beyond their high-profile career and 1970 breakup. As a 21-year-old fan, I've discovered obscure compilation projects through the channel that have expanded my knowledge of the band's works beyond just their original albums and the compilations available in Spotify. I appreciate learning about little-known areas of Beatles history. Nice work Andrew.

The Drop In Performance is among the finest live performances, unfortunately the cameramen did not catch John’s guitar solo on Long Tall Sally, and George’s solo was omitted as though the Beatles were a single mind and knew to play a shorter version. The show had John and Paul clowning around in an intimate setting with well behaved And appreciative audience and host. The Beatles in charismatic top form just as Beatlemania was about to explode upon the England

Isn't it amazing that the Beatles were so good that 60 years on your videos are getting thousands of views. I worked with a man in 1986 who worked as a doorman at de montfort hall in Leicester in the 60's who was going to sell me all the Beatles autographs for £20 on Friday and I got the sack on the Wednesday. I missed out.😩

Bruce Forsyth was underappreciated I think. The man was hugely talented and fantastic with people. Ironically, his only real equal in terms of being a game show host, Bob Monkhouse, was one of the few people in the UK to have a video recorder and was an obsessive recorder of television shows, particularly ones that featured comedy, and a lot of old footage we see today, are from his archive, so it is possible that he captured some of those lost Beatles television appearances.

It is interesting to see that the Swedish concert arrangers weren't too sure whether the Beatles would attract a big audience in the beginning of the tour and as you noted, even printed other bands and artists they were touring with using bigger font. At their Eskilstuna concert they toured together with the Swedish pop group Trio me Bumba, who then were very popular in Sweden and there has been stories about Beatles being the supporting act to Trio me Bumba, but that wasn't true - it was rather the opposite. The group Trio me Bumba still exists today and the leader Jan-Erik "Bumba" Lindqvist seems still today very happy to talk about touring with the Beatles, and who wouldn't want to listen to such stories and memories?

The reason for this is that this is so early on in their career that most people didn't know who they were. They didn't get that wider recognition here in Scandinavia until they released "She Loves You" as a single. That was the very first song that I heard of The Beatles here in Norway. In fact the other Swedish artists such as singer Lill Babs that can be seen to the left on one of the photos taken from the TV show "Drop In" later said that she had no idea who they were - and what lay ahead of them. The small crowd of the youngsters that are sitting 2 meters away from them had no idea of how they were supposed to behave in front of The Beatles. So, here you can see the slow reaction of young people being taken by suprise for the very first time. The presenter of the show, Clas Burling, had been in England and was one of the very first outside Britain to vitnes their tremendous success there. He made intervjues with them - and was instrumental in bringing them over to Sweden for their very first trip abroad - except for their play jobs in Hamburg, Germany of coarse. This trip to Sweden was the very first beginning of their promotion of the single "She Loves You" - and their album "Please Please Me" outside Britain. Their short performance on "Drop In" can be found here on KZbin - but their opening song "She Loves You" has sadly been muted - but you can see them perform.

That show recorded for Swedish radio was indeed amazing. I remember the being startled the first time I heard it. I had not realized that they could play a live show that was that good! Maybe it was the partly due to the fact that, as stated here, the crowd was quieter than normal. Because of the screaming girls and lack of adequate on-stage monitors, I think they often were unable to hear each other playing.

I have been to Sweden and actually attended a concert at Gröna Lund It is a venue like no other. It is basically a fun fair with an auditorium smack in the middle. You literally watch a band while people are whizzing around on rides around you!! You buy a ticket for the park which has the gig ticket thrown in. You can also buy a season ticket for the park which gets you into concerts for the whole summer season. The most amazing place to watch a live gig. Amazing people, the Swedish. I studied at the secondary school they played their first Sweden gig at (and got to perform on that very stage a number of times!) and it had this lovely tapestry up in the main hall behind a small stage inspired by the band. Great video! Klas Burling - Swedish Radio journalist and local "pop oracle" - was indeed a national treasure if just only for his part in getting to know the Beatles, recommending them to the right people to organize the tour in Sweden and pushing for the Swedish Radio and Drop-In performances to be made. Coaxing two more numbers was clearly NOT planned and the show's actual hosts were visibly miffed! Just a minor nitpick: the 4-track they used for IWTHYH wasn't new - there were two giant Telefunken machines installed in separate machine rooms the late 50's. The new machines, Studer J37's, would arrive in the control rooms in time for the Help! sessions.

The Beatles' performance on Drop-In is considered almost as legendary in Sweden as their appearance on the Ed Sullivan Show. At the time Swedish television only had one channel and according to reports I've read about 3-4 million people tuned in that night to watch their performance. That correlates to around half of Sweden's population in 1963

The advent of the word "Beatlemania" is claimed by a number of people including a guy called Andi Lothian who was an associate of the Scottish promoter Albert Bonici. Bonici had booked them through Brian Epstein in October 1962 for a tour in Scotland in January 1963, and had the option / clause of all future tours in Scotland. And he did til mid 1964. The next Scottish gigs he promoted were in October 1963, and it was there that Lothian claims he coined the term chatting to a reporter. However there doesn't appear to be any use of it from reports of the gig and instead it was a headline in Daily Mirror by Don Short which appears to be the real story. Add to that Lothian has a history for building his role claiming to be the man who took The Beatles to Scotland. When in reality he was a young sideman to Bonici during those early days working for him. Lothian did become a promoter in his own right after working with Bonici.

Do you have any copy’s of now and then. I got a marble vinyl and it has label splits near the spindle hole. Like it had been played before but it was new
