Here's what a contemporary drummer of Pete's said when he was asked in an interview what he thought of Pete's drumming: *"He was a genius. You could sit Pete Best on a drum kit and ask him to play for 19 hours and he'd put his head down and do it. He'd drum like a dream with real style and stamina all night long and that really was the Beatles' sound, forget the guitars. I was amazed when they replaced him. I even thought about learning guitar so he could be the drummer in my band. The Beatles didn't hate Pete Best, but they didn't want to be outshone by their drummer. Ringo was a good drummer but he was more ordinary."* - Chris Curtis, drummer for The Searchers, a great Liverpool band who scored a 1964 Top 3 Hit in the US charts with their classic, "Love Potion # 9". Chris saw Pete Best play many times in both Hamburg and Liverpool during Pete's two years as The Beatles' drummer.
@ktcarl2 жыл бұрын
You can find many more drummers and musicians from that period in England whose opinions are quite different from Chris Curtis. In fact, there are 3 that have a differing opinion. John-Paul-George. Plus all the producers that listened to them in the studio didn't think Pete was a good drummer....including George Martin.

@@ktcarl John, Paul, and George have all said, directly or indirectly, that Pete was a great drummer. And as for producers, the only one who didn't like Pete's drumming was George Martin--specifically, Pete's version of, "Love Me Do". But when Ringo replaced Pete and did his version of the same song at EMI, George Martin rejected it the same as he had rejected Pete's a few months earlier. And Martin hired pro session drummer, Andy White, to come in the next week to do the official recording of the song.
@ktcarl2 жыл бұрын
@@Cosmo-Kramer Uhhhh, I've read that Martin hired a session drummer before Ringo joined the band because he didn't like Pete's drumming. He didn't know who Ringo was when he showed up in place of Pete. He already had White ready to go. Here are the 3 producers and 1 session engineer that didn't like Pete's drumming; Bert Kaempfert - Polydor Mike Savage - Decca Ron Richards(Martin's assistant) - EMI George Martin - EMI Check this out. kzbin.info/www/bejne/oIaWkmSams6ZY9k

@@ktcarl No, Martin didn't book the session drummer until after Ringo did his recording of, "Love Me Do", on September 4th. It's true that Martin wasn't expecting Ringo as he didn't know Pete had been replaced, but he let Ringo record the song anyway, and rejected it. He then hired the session drummer (Andy White) to come one week later, on September 11th, which he did. Ringo showed up expecting to get a second crack at the song, and was furious to find White there. -- Bert Kaempfert only disliked the loudness of Pete's drumming, as he was an "easy listening" producer, not fond of the heavier sounds of Rock 'n Roll. The sound engineer said they were completely unprepared for The Beatles and their heavy beat, having never heard anything like it before. -- Mike Savage was *not* a producer, he was the lowest-level assistant, and had no authority whatsoever to comment on what would and would not have been done with any of the band members had they been signed. The actual producer, Mike Smith, never had any problem with Pete's drumming, and indeed, signed Pete and his new band after he was sacked from The Beatles. No session drummers were required. Mike is also on record saying in an interview with Beatles fan magazine, The Beatles Book: *"Pete was a better drummer than Ringo."* -- As for Martin and Richards at EMI, Martin changed the arrangement of, "Love Me Do", with no warning, which threw Pete (and Paul, who was not happy about it) off, removing Pete's skip-beat, in the process. EMI sound engineer Norman Smith said, *"The problem wasn't with how Pete was drumming, but rather with what he was being asked to drum with the new arrangement."* -- And finally, that link you provided is a total hit job on Pete by a lying, rabid Ringo Apologist. The video is filled with lies and half-truths, all fabricated and skewed to disparage Pete and defend Ringo, and the decision to replace Pete with him. ---------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

@@Cosmo-Kramer How can that be true??? I saw and heard Martin say that he told Epstein that he could use Best on stage but that he was going to get a session drummer for recording. That was before he even knew about Ringo. There was 4 different producers that didn't like Pete Best's drumming. Pete was inadequate in the studio. Tony Sheridan's comment: "The producer didn't think Pete's drumming was good enough for recording." "Kaempfert suggested Pete not play his bass drum because he used to get too fast- The tempo was a problem." Tony went on to say, "Pete was a crap drummer. You can take my word for it. He was just not competent." Mike Savage-Session engineer: "I thought Pete was very average and didn't keep good time. You could pick up a better drummer in any pub in London." "The drummer should be the rock. If the rock isn't good, then you start thinking, no." "If DECCA was going to sign The Beatles, we wouldn't have used Pete Best on the record." Ron Richards (Martin's assistant): "Pete Best wasn't very good. It was me who later said to George Martin - He's useless. We've got to change this drummer." George Martin: "...but he couldn't play drums very well. I mean he couldn't keep in time too well and I was aware the band wasn't tight and they needed that binding force that a good drummer should give them. So I said to Brian I'll get another drummer for the recordings. You can do what you like with him on stage. But we'll have someone else on the tracks." The Pete Best Fan Club needs a big dose of reality medicine. It's silly carrying on this Pete Best love fest.

I read a biography on the Beatles back in the sixties and that's when I first heard of Pete Best and his story. I was a teenager myself at the time and thought, how sad this must have been for Pete. Then I began to contemplate what I might have done in his place and at that age. I am not physically a big guy, I was attending military school at the time I read this biography, and I am of Italian and Irish descent. Military school can be a tough place with a lot of “jocks” and I didn’t want to be in any of their cross hairs. So, without going into too much detail, I had access to the commandant’s office, paper work, information, and week end town passes. I befriended two of the larger, meaner “goons” that were football players, had girlfriends in town, and also had disciplinary issues disqualifying them from getting town passes every now and then. I demonstrated to them I could make this go away and in return I wanted them to keep everyone else off my back. It worked great! I love it when a plan comes together. So now back to Pete Best. Back in those days in Liverpool there was a type of guy described as a “Teddy Boy”, goons. I would have walked right out of Brian’s office after he given me the bad news and rounded up two “Teddy Boys”, cut a deal with them, and have them explain to Ringo why he did not want to take the job and then keep the two “Teds” on retainer for a while just in case.
