In April 1964 The Beatles held the top 5 places in the American charts in a feat which has never been and will never be broken. The record which topped that chart was their latest single, Can't Bu Me Love' and this video tells the history of that song - from its composition in a Paris hotel room to its retirement from The Beatles' live shows in August 1965.

Andrew, you raise a very interesting point about the lyrics to Can`t Buy Me Love and You Can`t do that. As early as 1964, John is exploring personal, introspective lyrics. Paul is more attracted to "generic" tin pan alley songwriting. He is not keen at this point to explore his personal world in song, but John is already wearing his heart on his sleeve to some degree.This push and pull approach to personal revelation becomes a fine dynamic by the time Rubber Soul arrives and John is thoroughly immersed in Dylan. It is not surprising that Paul`s more "universal" songs like Yesterday have found more appeal with cover artists over the decades, while John`s more deeply personal anthems like Mother and Watching the Wheels remain much harder to cover in a commercial way. One can well imagine Sinatra signing Yesterday but not Mother ! The best music they made, IMHO, was the music they made together. Yin and Yang. Thanks for your engaging videos. The Beatles at Shea Stadium film was probably the very first time I ever saw any kind of film or video of the band. The local public library showed it one afternoon in 1977. It's an important Beatles memory for me. So interesting to find out here that it was first broadcast on the BBC on March 1, 1966, the day I was born. It's the little tidbits like that that always keep me coming back.

When the single was rereleased in the USA with the original picture sleeve design in 1984, the cigarette in Paul’s right hand was airbrushed out. This left Paul’s hand looking strange, in the position of holding a cigarette, but with no visible cigarette! Another great video, thanks!

When I was a kid, my friends and I would cue up the song on the turntable, and just before it played, we'd yell, "We're out!" I actually prefer You Can't Do That over the two. The rhythm pattern was very tight and tough, and John's vocals were strong. The melody was also very unusual for its time, and George's 12-string riff was seriously cool! When he came back to the house with the record in a brown paper bag ( very 60's!) and first played the song ( and " You can't do that") that day, the occasion became indelibly printed in my memory. As teenager in 1964, I consumed (ravenously) everything from The Beatles without much thought. At the time I didn't know who was singing lead on each song. It was only later that the John/Paul dichotomy became clear to me in their earliest records. I too prefer 'You Can't Do That' to 'Can't Buy Me Love'. John's sound is the 'definitive Beatles' of that era, to my ear. As time went by you could argue that it was Paul who took over the dominant role, through his passion for experimentation and his dedication to production excellence. But at a gut level the sound that truly exploded out of AM transistor radio speakers in 1963 and 1964 was John's. For all Paul's achievements (perhaps the foremost being just keeping the group together, focused, and extraordinarily creative through the late 1960's) it is John's songs (and voice) that still, to me, contain that fundamental essence of raw energy and a unique sound that captivated the world in those early years. Paul certainly flowered later, with songs like 'Yesterday', 'Eleanor Rigby', and 'Here, There, and Everywhere' adding a completely new (and also revolutionary) dimension to who 'The Beatles' were, and were capable of. But the best of that early Beatles period, the songs that can still (60 years on...) bring back some of that original shock and euphoria/hysteria, are the ones where John's voice and musical personality are the driving force. Or so it seems to me in 2024.

Born in the USSR, and being 8 years old when the song was released, I did not have the opportunity to buy the original record and hear the Beatles on the radio, so my first acquaintance with the song was, thanks to the purchase of a pirated copy on soft plastic (imagine this sound quality) in a local sound recordings studio, in 1965-66 I don’t remember exactly. in a short time, I listened to it probably 100-200 times. After that I became and still am an absolute Beatlemaniac.

Fun fact: Contrary to what most Beatles fans think, the Cow Palace is not actually in San Francisco. It's in a separate city (Daly City) and a separate county (San Mateo). But it would only take a few minutes to walk from the Cow Palace to the city limit between Daly City and San Francisco, so it SEEMS to be in San Francisco.

Great video, Andrew. Loved it. 'You Can't Do That' is my favourite of the sides by miles. The drums in the little pause after "Because I told you before" get me playing 'air drums' every time. I used to play my mum's copy of the single (which I still have) when I was about 6 years old. And that cowbell!

I love the explanations of the little sonic artifacts, like the original solo bleeding through or the extra "sloshiness" of the hi-hats. Those little quirks we've come to expect and enjoy. Here is a suggestion: The Beatles' show in Atlantic City, New Jersey around this time. I learned only recently that they wrote "What You're Doing" and "Every Little Thing" while staying in a hotel there. As someone who spent his 20s in New Jersey and blew lots of money in Atlantic City (money I should have spent on records), it felt like an honor that those songs were written (or at least worked on) there.

You Can't Do That, for a time, was my favorite Beatles song because of its tough sound and performance, and it was the first song (before karaoke) I performed before an audience, with a live band. Thus, I had to remember the lyrics. My subsequent performances of any song were all karaoke with the lyrics on a TV screen.

Thanks Andrew, your detail is fascinating. Reminds me that in 1961 at Radio 2UE in Sydney we had our 45rpm on air turntables adjusted to run at 48rpm, so our Beatles records sounded more exciting than our competition, and it worked! AFAIK no listeners ever complained.

That single signified the beginning of loving the Lennon/McCartney writing and, of the feeling that the two brought together, as to who maybe wrote more of the tune. I loved ‘Can’t Buy Me Love’ but when I flipped to the other side I was knocked out! I’d heard nothing like it before! It was English R&B to me. Lyrics were brilliant and that cowbell was brilliant and the background vocals screamed out angst! I was 12 years old in’64 but was learning quite a lot from the Beatles lyrics. But mostly I was learning to listen to the parts of the music namely the backbeat…Ringo and Paul. Synched in they were! Once I learned Ringo’s high-hat notes on CBML I was in seventh heaven. See? The excitement never leaves! Thanks for another brilliant episode Andrew!

When they held the top five spots on the chart, I had no problem at all with that. I was already 15 at the time, and I was in awe of everything they released. And Armstrong's "Hello Dolly" had no problems on the AM radio while that was all happening. It got a lot of play, between Beatles tracks, and no one I knew ever complained. Just sayin'.

One of my favorite records is ' There i've Said it Again by Bobby Vinton , which was a wonderful number one record in the 1960s . The record rocks , with a great arrangement and beautiful harmony that stands up today as well as any other record by any other artist .

I'm always amazed by the thought of each one of those singles sold; so many millions of fans having their own individual experience of actually acquiring and playing their own copy of a new Beatles single or album on their own, sibling or parents record player. I for one, would cobble my pocket money together, have a satchel to carry it home, get on my bike and head off to the local record shop - sometimes, due their limited stock to come home empty handed! Short of breath with excitement to place that little hole on the turntable spindle! I think the joy of holding a Beatles record, whatever the format, is something truly magic - only surpassed by the magic of the music itself. I can’t say I prefer one song over the other. But the Hey Jude album was my first Beatles album so Can’t But Me Love always reminds me of listening to that album as a kid. Ella Fitzgerald covered 'Can't Buy Me Love' a few months after The Beatles' release. It's possible (though I haven't done much research on the idea) that this song was the one that might have convinced pop and jazz singers from the previous generation that The Fabs were something not to be easily dismissed.

When you analyse the song, it is a bit basic being 12 bar blues based but the chorus changes it all. The sound of the guitar solo is enhanced I think by the bleed of the previous takes. I always heard it as some sort of reverb years ago but it makes sense when you listen closely that it's previous takes. Overall the song just has huge energy and of course was in A Hard Day's Night twice in very memorable scenes.

We had all the Beatle records. The thing was they were predominantly happy and they were stretching rock and roll away from three cords. I was amazed they could come up with ever more original material. While there were other great songs, no one came close until they turned up their game. Elvis and The Beach Boys got left behind. Only Simone and Garfunkel were interesting by comparison. The supremes did very well too and we had those records .

Ironically, Louis Armstrong didn't care too much for "Hello, Dolly!" It was only while on tour in Europe, months after recording it (and forgetting about it,) that he found out through his management that it was a big hit. Much to his dismay, Kapp (his label) and Joe Glaser insisted that he program it on his subsequent concerts. He asked his band, "Anybody remember that damned tune?" (I read this in Terry Treachout's book, "Pops: a biography of Louis Armstrong.")

The record chart is interesting. Several Dave Clark Five songs are there, as well as "Hello Dolly" and "Pink Panther Theme". Even "We Love You Beatles" is there, along with Peter, Paul, and Mary plus the Beach Boys and The Searchers. I remember the Serendipity Singers from back then. That's a name that sticks in the brain. Around this time I got my first "pocket" transistor radio, so my music listening really picked up.

Great video as always Andrew. Yeah my memories of this song. I was around three years old at the time and remember hearing it on the radio along with their other hit songs that I became more familiar with when I grew older and started buying their records. Indeed those US picture sleeves of this :45 are rare and expensive. I paid $115 for mine around 10 or so years ago. Funny that you brought up the “Hey Jude” (“The Beatles Again”). I’m just starting out buying records at the time it was released and having to decide which Beatles album I wanted to buy. I only had enough bucks for one and the three choices I had were “Let it Be,” “McCartney, & “Hey Jude.” I got “Hey Jude” because it had “Can’t Buy Me Love.” In 1970 this nine year old had to try and get the best bang for his buck. I never saw the colored US vinyl copies. Would imagine they’re worth a lot.

Hi Andrew, some new things I learned here about this record which is always welcome. I am not that mad about Can't Buy Me Love, it is high energy and commercial but a long way down my list of favourites. I too much prefer the B side with that great intro played on George's 12 string Rickenbacker. The domination of the chart in April 64 was amazing but owed I think a lot to luck. JFK had been recently assassinated so the country was depressed and as the Beatles hit the USA in Feb 64 they had a nice little stockpile of great material from 63 so plenty of releases to hit the Americans with. I also think that the other labels having some of the songs meant that they competed to get records out to cash in so it all added up to a wave of Beatles material being available. Add to that the Ed Sullivan shows and the rest truly was history. Another great upload, thanks Andrew

And their next single broke that same rule. Both A Hard Day's Night and Things We Said Today (and the American B-side of I Should Have Known Better) turned up on the A Hard Day's Night album. It makes sense because you would want all of the songs from the film to appear on the soundtrack. Then in 1965 they did something similar. Both Ticket To Ride and Help! were issued as singles and both songs also appeared on the Help! soundtrack album. The difference was that this time both of the B-sides were left off the album.

It was a bit different in the USA I think and for reasons Andrew has explained before different track listings because of credits/royalties etc and let's face it the Americans liked to milk the Beatles songs for everything they could making as many albums as possible. Fascinating to hear how these all came together, I know a lot about the Beatles but every time Andrew loads up a new video I learn something new.

I have always loved this single. In the context of its time, Can't Buy Me Love is great. As the work has grown over time, I agree that You Can't Do That is the most arresting of the two. John Lennon's guitar solo is something I worked on and worked on to get. It is far more difficult than it seems.

Another great video, Andrew. Early 1964 was so exciting in terms of the Beatles. My local AM stations had their songs playing constantly. I prefer Can't Buy Me Love to You Can't Do That. The latter could have been improved with more cow bell! It took me about 15 years to finally track down a copy of the Can't Buy Me Love Picture sleeve.

I'm glad you explained the high-hat overdub on the mono mix. I always felt the stereo mix was lacking that driving force that the mono had because of that missing overdub.

This song breaks the loose "rule" that a Beatles single should not appear on one of their albums. It's also unusual that the B-side appears on a U.K. album as well. I wondered why the U.S. picture sleeve for "Can't Buy Me Love" is so expensive, and now I know, thanks to Andrew. Also, I didn't know that it was pressed on yellow vinyl in the U.S. I'm always learning interesting Beatles facts from this channel.

As Andrew stated they didn't like to repeat themselves much but they did often write using inspiration from each other . Both these songs are 12 bar blues with a bridge or chorus.It seems Lennon heard cant buy me love and then used the same idea on his you cant do that. I remember that Mc Cartney said that trying to write a memorable 12 bar was very difficult and that was one reason he was proud of I'M Down even though it deviates a little from a 12 bar. These 2 songs are outstanding songs. I remember being knocked by cant Buy Me Love.

This song is very important in my development as a guitarist. Aside from copying The Ventures, The Cure and The Smiths, I also copy George Harrison's playing. And Can't Buy Me Love was one of my first challenges. A 14 year old me was playing it on a karaoke machine back and forth just focusing on George. And it took me a few hours to get it note perfect. When I finally got it, a sense of fulfillment wrapped all over me. Then in 1994 in my first professional band. We were playing in a lounge of a 5star hotel, a customer requested for Can't Buy Me Love. In my rare performance as a lead vocalist. We played the song, I was excited as it was the very first time I played it onstage 7 years after woodshedding this song in my bedroom... MONEY CAN'T BUY ME THAT THRILL!

One thing I noticed about a lot of Beatles songs, is that they emphasize crying, especially in the early days. There were of course songs about crying by guys like cry by Johnny Ray, but they were the first group to really not be afraid to show that side of men ever.

1964 (it was 60 years ago today) was such an eventful year for the Beatles. So there is a lot more to come about it on this channel, I hope. 😉 I first listened to 'Can't buy me love' on the LP 'The Beatles' Greatest'. But since this album was loaded with their hits, this particular song didn't stand out for me at first. I still think the original stereo mix lacks the dynamic of the drums and guitars and sounds a little thin. On the recently released remix of 'The Beatles 1962 - 1966', the sound is much better. I never listened to the mono version with its stronger hi-hat , though. It's interesting that so many critics prefered 'You can't do that'. I never did. My first contact with it was either on Ringo Starr's radio show 'Ringo's Yellow Submarine' from 1983 (which aired in West-Berlin on the RIAS radio station) or on the 'A Hard Day's Night' album. It's an impressive one, no doubt. But as John Lennon once said, it became the b-side because 'Can't Buy Me Love' was so good. 😉

I was in bed ill when my mother bought this record for me. Can't buy me love and You can't do that sounded so great on my new Dansette record player. Well from a 7 inch speaker, I thought was great anyway. It lifted my spirits no end. I will always love these songs. I can't stand these Beatle bashers. As i remember there were loads back then.. Great channel Andrew keep up the good work.

Andrew, "Can't Buy Me Love" is a quality single, no doubt about that. But i always felt that it wasn't as good as "Please Please Me", "She Loves You" or "I Want To Hold Your Hand". Also as a combined A & B side it doesn't reach the heights of the previous single "Hand/This Boy". Just my opinion.

I, too, prefer You Can't Do That. Love the grinding guitar and John's rough voice. In fact, it's one of my favorites. In 1964 I started my first job and finally had money to buy records, both 45s and albums. My purchases weren't confined to Beatles, or even rock 'n roll. I deliberately bought things to expand my musical experiences, including Armstrong's Hello Dolly. Still have most of these records, except, in the case of the 45s, I no longer have the jacket covers. I attended both August 31st shows at the Cow Palace, which as someone pointed out, is actually in Daly City, across the county line from San Francisco.

We had Love Me Do first which charted a meagre 17th place, then Please Please Me (GM commenting 'you just recorded your first no 1'), then From Me To You which was so-so but still no1, then of course She Loves You which kickstarted Beatlemania followed by I Want To Hold Your Hand... That's already 5 noteworthy singles before Can't Buy Me Love, not to mention there were the Polydor singles released as well (from the Hamburg recordings).
