This red and the blue plus the Hey Jude album were my gateway to the Beatles. All of them I got on 8 track tape first. Played them every day. I also have several copies of each album. Can't get enough.

The only small gripe I had with the red album was that there were no George Harrison songs on it. Perhaps Allen Klein preferred Lennon and McCartney songs only. I realise the red like the blue album is not a greatest hits album. "Twist and shout" and the "Long Tall Sally" EP for example did chart for the Beatles plus some of their B side singles not included here.

A few notes for those who might not know: The Red album did not make it to #1 in the US, it made it to number 3, as well as in the UK. The US version presented in this video is not the 1973 version. The US 1973 version was on Apple Records with the Apple labels. That version does not have the "whisper" but it does have the barking (albeit less pronounced) the 1976 red labels Capitol pressing has the barking as well. As mentioned in the video, different mixes of several songs were used but one to have mentioned should be "Day Tripper". The stereo version of Day Tripper used for this compilation was the US stereo version used for "Yesterday And Today" and it can only be found on that album and this compilation. This version of the intro is to me, the better one because it starts with just one guitar rather than with 2, making it a bit more impactful when the second guitar and bass come in.

The Blue Album went to No. 1 and The Red Album went to No. 3. The album you mentioned that was selling on TV was called "Alpha Omega" Album (4 record set) with a couple of solo Beatles songs included for some reason. It's really hard to find now.

wow lots of cool info but I have to say the clear USA red and blue vinyl sound louder and more dynamic compared to the German or UK pressings. the clear USA discs used virgin vinyl for the color and are one solid clear red or blue for example

I do like those clear pressings. I have both, but I have to say that the German and UK pressings still beat them (just in my opinion of course). Glad you brought the clear vinyl up. Thanks for the comment

90% of most imports are truly better but it all depends on if the disc is NM and fully cleaned. most of the imports are not the cut at same volume of some USA LP's (compared) so some imports that are softer cuts dont sound that good when played loud IMHO. regardless I REALLY like your channel, thanks

Same here. Though raised with a '60s UK childhood peppered by Beatle songs, as familiar as nursery rhymes, only in 1979 did I buy any Beatle albums, starting with that one. Plenty of familiar sounds there, but the overriding impression was, Wait, they did that one? Many songs were a Sixties background for kids who didn't necessarily know the source. What, they did that one too? Wait, they did that one? It was the range that was the revelation.

9:03 - The red album was originally issued (in summer 1973) on the same apple label as the German release seen earlier. What Brian is showing here is a post-1975 re-issue, when Apple's distribution rights with EMI/Capitol expired; No more Apple labels, hello once again Capitol label!) Red-colored vinyl issues were in 1978 - the year of the colored vinyl fad. I bought both the red and blue albums in 1973 (I was 19) on their first day in the record store, and still have them in pristine mint condition. Shrinkwrap still on them. They've been carefully stored away (along with all my other records) to preserve them. I listen now to CDs when I want to hear these recordings, and prefer digital over analog.

I scored this very same pressing for $20 from my record shop! I was floored when I first heard it! I’m pretty sure Day Tripper also has a different mix. The guitar at the beginning sounds way different! Paperback Writer is also a joy to listen to, this copy really brings out that beautiful bass!

Wine chest open for business? Are the schnapps for sale on needlemeetsvinyl.com? In all seriousness, Red/Blue are absolute gems. You are correct, Brian there was a compilation that began to make the rounds in early 1973 entitled "Alpha Omega" that was produced by a company I believe out of Yonkers, NY maybe? Not sure. Anyhow as with anything else pertaining to The Beatles post mortem, the only way to get them to move their feet was to hold those feet to the fire. I think a lot of fans back in '73 assumed that "Alpha Omega" was legitimate product (which it certainly was not) and it sold like hotcakes. In fact, there were several variations of the "Alpha Omega" with the collection being sold as a complete 4-LP set and then there were two separate addendum to the set both containing four records but with different track lists. Then to further confuse the issue due to high demand the set was re-pressed and the jackets now bore the title "Beatles Volume 1" and "Beatles Volume 2". All very confusing. So Allen Klein was brought in to sort the mess out and he did so in twofold manner. First he instructed his lawyers to sue the creators of "Alpha Omega" effectively removing it from the market. Then in order to satiate the demand of the public for a similar product, as you mentioned he curated Red/Blue for that purpose. Interestingly, he did initially consider including Beatles solo tracks on the Red/Blue, much the same way they were curated alongside The Beatles' hits on "Alpha Omega". However, that idea never made it to wax and thus it would not be until 2017, with SiriusXM's "The Beatles Channel" that solo Beatles work would be allowed to sit beside group efforts in a major campaign. Interestingly, Beatlesvinyl85 (Marv) showed some unique foreign pressings of Red/Blue, perhaps from Korea that have different tracklistings than their standard counterparts. From memory the controversial tracks ("Norwegian Wood (This Bird Has Flown)", "The Ballad Of John And Yoko", "Lucy In The Sky With Diamonds", "A Day In The Life") are deleted and are replaced with "She's Leaving Home", "When I'm Sixty-Four" and "Oh! Darling". Worth seeking out! But yeah the Red album has always a grab bag of unique mixes, going back to the 1973 vinyl to the 1993 compact issue (which itself contains some unique mixes) and then the current 2010 issue which makes use of the 2009 stereo remasters.

Allen Klein compiled the albums, while he was still managing John Lennon, George Harrison and Ringo Starr. However by the time of its release in April 1973 they decided they didn’t want Klein representing them as solo artists or representing them as Beatles. The three of them must have decided this during the session for “I’m The Greatest” the previous month which does appear on the Ringo album. John was interviewed about this and stated that in an interview that was broadcast in the UK kzbin.info/www/bejne/f3yld52JesqbqM0&ab_channel=hahameatball Klein releasing it in April was probably his last act of vengeance at Apple towards Paul as Red Rose Speedway was released the same month. Possibly little noticed at the time, and more than likely would have been unknown for years afterwards that Neil Aspinall took over at Apple Corps representing The Beatles only, and would remain so until April 2007.

I bought both at the time (early/mid 70s). The Blue album is just PERFECT. But the Red album is a lot shorter time wise - & has 2 less tracks on it. Apparently a lot less thought was given to the Red album. Another 8 or 9 tracks could have been chosen to bring it up to the same total time as the Blue album. Another 2 tracks each from "Please Please Me", "With The Beatles" & "Beatles For Sale"?. And 3 more tracks from "Revolver"?. Maybe a couple of good "B" sides?. Maybe a couple of Harrison songs?. Then this could have been a DYNAMIC album!!!!

I've been going crazy trying to find this random backwards clip that I remember as a kid. It was in-between tracks, I think it was all vocals, and I think John is saying "hello" in it. Definitely US cassette, but not sure if red or blue. I want to say that it preceded Help! or maybe was around Strawberry Fields? It phonetically sounded like "meh bay feeling banna hop on nanny", and it just repeated until fade out.
@aureliande2659
@aureliande2659 3 жыл бұрын
If you still get this ... What you describe sounds suspiciously like the runout groove of Sgt. Pepper's LHCB. It repeats endlessly on UK (and some other countries') original copies of the album (in the locked groove) if you can bring your record player NOT to lift off at the end of the album. It's also on some other issues, even the British/German picture disc, but was not included on the US version. On some later versions of SP it's faded out (because it was very difficult to cut as intended). You also find it on the US Rarities album. Its original position was after the final chord of A Day in the Life.

Ben Hartzberg yes, and I’m so glad you mentioned this as I totally forgot. The Japanese pressings are very good, but don’t have the clarity of the German pressings. In fact the Japanese pressing I have is from the flag series and while it’s nice, it has a bit of distortion in the low and high end. Still a pressing worth owning, just not quite as pristine as the German.
