@MaestroPrep I'm talking about the song. At the time, abortion was illegal here in the UK. But sexual mores were changing and teenage pregnancy was on the rise. At the same time, attitudes to birth outside wedlock did not keep pace. It was a very big social issue, because of what was known as "backstreet abortion" (ie, unsafe interventions by unqualified people), to which girls were turning to avoid the stigma (and costs) of a fatherless child. There were calls, eventually successful, to change the law in order to preserve women's health. The song was certainly *seen* as a contribution to the debate - we assumed that's why she's leaving for an appointment, and the "man from the motor trade" was interpreted as a euphemism for an abortionist. I've just checked with modern internet help, and seen that McCartney didn't claim this (though he doesn't seem to have denied it), but it was certainly about an actual runaway who'd been in the papers, and she did indeed have an abortion, though it was after she came back home. An interesting history to the song!
