@aBeatleFan4ever3 күн бұрын
"The Ballad of John and Yoko" was recorded on April 14th, 1969 (two and a half months after the rooftop performance on January 30th). John was so eager to record his new song that he didn't want to wait for George & Ringo to be back. George was out of the country and Ringo was filming "The Magic Christian" movie. So it was just John & Paul in the recording studio. They recorded the basic rhythm track first with John singing and playing acoustic guitar and Paul playing drums. Just before a take John said to Paul, "Go a bit faster, Ringo." and Paul replied back, "OK, George.". They continued to call each other Ringo & George occasionally during the session. They did 11 takes of the rhythm track with take ten being deemed the best. Next they added overdubs to take 10 with Paul on bass and John on lead guitar. Then John added a second lead guitar and Paul added piano. Paul then added maracas and then his backing vocal. The song was released on May 30th... while their "Get Back" single was still #1 on the charts. This idea that the members of The Beatles were always fighting in 1969 has been shown to be bogus. There is a ton of footage of them from January and they got along fine almost all the time. John and Paul worked together side by side on this day - and had a great time. On April 30th of 1969... it was just John and Paul in the recording studio again - this time to record all the crazy, funny vocals for "You Know My Name". Again they had a great time making what ended up being one of their weirdest tracks on a single. Paul said years later that this was his favorite recording session ever - because of all the great fun he and John had that day.

Maybe not *always* fighting, but enough that the ship was sinking with no hope of recovery. But it's nice to have the record corrected that when they officially split they were on reasonably good terms. It wasn't until Paul sued the others that things got really ugly.

Especially during this rocky final year! But they both had those early years experience of living in each other's head and going through the "FAME" experience together. That was what you saw on the 'Rooftop', when they would glance at each other with knowing looks, like they were teenagers for life! Again! And for our benefit, they gave so much...

Just John & Paul because Ringo & George were out of town. When George returned, they recorded his 'Old Brown Shoe' as the B-side. The little riff at the end of this song is lifted from Johnny Burnette's "Lonesome Tears In My Eyes", which you can hear The Beatles perfom from the Live At The BBC album.
@clayanthony79893 күн бұрын
Good job James! I was wondering if anyone had noticed "Lonesome Tears". The Beatles never actually stole from other writers, but they sometimes borrowed (except 'Come Together', of course). I love those BBC Sessions albums and was listening to that track last night! I was planning on requesting a few for the December reactions thread, but went with Brian Eno & David Byrne at the last minute, as my November request didn't fall until today, December 1st. But I did make a suggestion for the Beatles Fan Club Christmas singles as a nod toward the holiday spirit. They always lift my spirit, and my arm lifts those other "spirits" in response!

BAGISM: The bag thing was in Vienna - it's in the lyrics. They were there 'eating chocolate cake in a bag' It was another of Yoko's conceptual/ performance art ideas. Added to 'Bed Peace' (which IIRC correctly they 'performed' in Amsterdam and Montreal and 'Hair Peace' (joke, I think - hairpiece?) getting in a large black bag so they couldn't be seen except for the moving lumps and bumps was meant to bring peace to the world... Or at least, attention to John and Yoko, so they could talk about peace. And complain about not being left in peace. Which is bit odd when they were actively campaigning for world peace, deliberately using John's fame (and Yoko's growing notoriety) to draw the attention of the world's media to get them to focus on the need for an end to the Vietnam War. Oh, yes, and you're right, they did do the bag thing at the RSRnRC too, IIRC. And Yoko did another performance piece there, IIRC while John and the DM were doing Yer Blues. That was the one where she wore a sanitary napkin over her eyes like a blindfold, and sat knitting/ crocheting while the menfolk played. I think it was a comment on feminism, suggesting women are hampered by their menstrual cycles/ reproductive functions and this leads to them reverting to unskilled or lower status forms of labour. But don't quote me on that - I'm no expert on the subject and could've completely misunderstood. I don't think anyone was quite sure what her art pieces were meant to mean, and this helped build the media frenzy around her and John in those early years of their relationship. Love it or hate it, these strange 'happenings' proved irresistible as a media story, with photographs and quotes from interviews (some with J and Y inside the bag, some in bed, wearing pyjamas) making front page news.

Now, Take 7 isn't the single that hit #1, and it's a much angrier Lennon vocal + a lot more guitar. It's also on the US LP "Hey Jude". John was probably joking when he called out Ringo, then he calls out George. Always start with the original, and if you're curious about alternative takes do them later.

Why take 7? The fully produced version went to #1.

He called Paul "Ringo", and didn't Paul then call John "George"?

This is quite different to the released single which incidentally only featured 2 of the 4.. John and Paul

It's Paul. It's not Ringo. They jokingly called each other Ringo and George. Only Paul and John played on this song. The others were unavailable. John called Paul on short notice and didn't want to wait fir the others.

Paul McCartney on drums-John on rhythm guitar. They would overdub lead guitar, piano and bass on the final version. They're kidding each other in this take calling Paul ringo then Paul calls John George. Post below goes in better detail.
