After the basic song recordings were done, Paul and John worked closely together to plan the album's sequencing. They came up with ideas to blend each track into the next, sometimes fitting in some random piece of music or sound to make it all work. Anyway, I'm so glad you let yourself listen to each side uninterrupted, so you can appreciate the amazing artistic flow.

When it came out, Side 1 was played completely on radio. I managed to record it with a simple cassette recorder. The Walrus WAS John; you can see it on the "Magical Mystery Tour" cover (and in the film?). But because of this ... "The walrus refers to Lewis Carroll's poem "The Walrus and the Carpenter" (from the book Through the Looking-Glass). Lennon later expressed dismay upon belatedly realising that the walrus was a villain in the poem." (Wikipedia) ... I guess John rather have Paul taking that role. 😄

Bungalow Bill was based on a real dude who killed a tiger in India. Lennon was pissed. The dude looked to the teacher, his mother said “it was us or him”. Their guru was not happy either and said “senseless death is senseless death”. The guy said the tiger was never a threat and never hunted again.

Dear Prudence was the first Beatle song I learned to play on guitar so it always has a special place for me. That is John's song about Mia Farrow's (married to Woody Allen for a while later) sister was hiding in her room, avoiding the Maharishi, whose preaching about avoiding the temptations of the flesh, while also being very creepy towards some of the women, causing John, and Paul, and Ringo to realize he was just a horny, giggling little man.

I'm glad I got to see this on KZbin, I enjoyed it a lot. The White Album is actually my favorite Beatles album - so special. Recently, I stumbled across a a video on KZbin telling the story behind the song 'The continuing Story of Bungalow Bill', which I found very interesting, I had never heard that in so much detail. I think the song has several layers to it though, I have always felt one layer of it was being an anti-war song reflecting about the Vietnam war going on at the time this album was released. I hope I get to watch the other 3 sides as well.

'Dear Prudence' is one of my all-time favorite songs. I was eight when I was listening to this all the time - thank you, older siblings! I started listening to them right from the beginning (the beginning here in the US). So many great memories listening back then. The diversity on this album is ridiculous, they're all over the place without disappointing - well, there's a couple of songs I could live without, but hey, as Paul once said, 'it's the f-ing Beatles!'. As a kid I only listened to sides 1 and 2, then when I was about 14 I 'discovered' the other album.

I know that there is just a huge amount of praise for Prince's solo on this song but for me, it still pales compared to Clapton's work on this version. His guitar truly weeps. Prince's is electrifying but doesn't serve the song the way Clapton's does. Sometimes tone and texture means much more than speed and showmanship.
