Do you prefer Help! or A Hard Day's Night better? (Movie, not album)
@johnbyrnes791213 сағат бұрын
Tough call Lee - I'd say Help! Because of the maturing with the dylanesque You've Got To Hide Your Love Away , folk I've Just Seen A Face , preheavy rock Ticket To Ride and of course the gorgeous amazing Yesterday ! Though I must say that there's a few special tracks on A Hard Day's Night such as the future nostalgic dream like Things We Said Today , the wonderful And I Love Her and beautiful I'll Be Back ! 🤡
@genegarrett33729 сағат бұрын
As just a movie, Hard Days Night was better; However HELP! was a satire of the James Bond Films and also was full of John's sarcastic humor. Example: in the studio recording scene when they recorded You're Gonna lose that Girl, the "baddies" are trying to capture Ringo to extract the sacrificial ring off his hand by using a saw to cut a hole around Ringo's drum kit from below so he'd fall through. At the end of recording, the engineer asks, "Boys are you buzzing (the saw noise)? John replies "No thanks, I got me car." (a drug reference, Buzzing!)

They're both very tongue and cheek anyway. But hard days night was about BeatleMania Both were very funny and silly.

I preferred Help, possibly because I was a bit older when I first saw it (8 years old) and it was silly and colourful. I loved the music from both films, but I think that Hard Day’s Night went over my head! I’ve watched it since and loved it, but still prefer Help.
@JaySpangler6 сағат бұрын
Hard days night is considered the five star movie, because it’s a fictional, black and white, cinéma vérité of a day in their life. I always thought Help was an even more entertaining movie for me. The humor is a lot more Monty Python-esque, way before Monty Python. Criticisms of Help are that while it’s fun, the plot is more like a premise than a plot. Both movies are great watches though if you’re into the fabs. Hard days night was the Rum and Coke movie where Help was weed.

Anyone who questions Ringo's drumming ability only needs to listen to "Ticket to Ride." His steady beat and terrific fills really stand out. "You've Got to Hide Your Love Away" was John's attempt at a Bob Dylan folk-style song. He definitely made it work. The movie "Help!" rode the James Bond trend at the time.. It was colorful (literally) and featured some good songs (and performance segments) but it was nowhere near as good or important a film as the earlier documentary-style "A Hard Day's Night."

Plus which Beates do they "hate"? Early cutsy Beatles? Or the more evolved maturing more intense Beatles? I was 14 when they arrived in '64. Even though I "liked" them initially but when your parents liked them as much as you it got boring for a while. Plus we had Motown, the Beach Boys, and the growing folk to Rock scene that was starting to reflect the turbulence of the 60s change. RUBBER SOUL brought me back to the Beatles in '66. I was a junior in high school. The Beatles were now cool, deep and caught up with the HUGE events of the later 60s.

John's voice in YOU'VE GOT TO HIDE YOUR LOVE AWAY was the most perfect I'd ever heard in any song, up to this point, in any of his songs! I know I was only 15 when this album came out but by then, they'd already had plenty of songs we'd sampled and this song just resonated with me so bad! I hadn't even yet met my 1st girlfriend but I did have a crush on someone! Looking back, John Lennon & the group were with me as I experienced stuff thru my 20th year and their music carried me thru so much! I'm thankful for them and I'm not sorry to say no other future music EVER supplanted Beatles' music! I'm 74, and, guess what, I still listen to them! RUBBER SOUL is in my car's CD player rn as a matter of fact and it'll most probably play rather than the radio on my next errand! Why not? 😂

Help was kind of a bridge between the earlier Beatles and the later, more 'progressive' Beatles. Rubber Soul was next, which was a definite change but not real drastic. Then Revolver, which was where they really moved forward. And yes, their voices are just special. The cool thing is that John and Paul had completely different voices, and they blended together so well. When they're singing solo they sound incredible, and when they join together its something special.

The video for "You've Got To Hide Your Love Away" was a random assortment of scenes, but for "Ticket to Ride" that was the actual full clip from the movie. Both songs are amazing and showcase John's growing maturity as a songwriter... the film of them in the Alps for "Ticket to Ride" is one of my favourite things of all time... it is sublime!.. and it was widely influential... this was before Rock videos were a thing.. and this clip, and the clip from A Hard Day's Night for the song "Can't Buy Me Love" where they are playing in a field, were the prototype of future rock videos, and also a huge inspiration for the TV show The Monkees that came out a year after the movie Help!.... as for the movie Help!, it sometimes gets a bad rap because people love A Hard Day's Night so much, but the sniping at Help! are ridiculous because it is also an amazing movie... very few things about the Beatles can be said to be underrated, but the movie Help! is actually underrated and it is a must watch movie

I think of the B&W film "A Hard Day's Night" to be the 1962 (conquered Europe), 1963-1964 (conquered the world) Beatlemania movie. The movie and albums "Help" and "Rubber Soul" were the 1965 color bridges that linked the old Beatlemania to the new start of psychedelia, "Revolver" in 1966 thru 1968.

Their lives are coming to an end. It is like remembering Tommy Dorsey and the big band era. I didn't appreciate them until my musicianship evolved. It is good to see you as part of the younger generation appreciate what I grew up with from the beginning. Most young people can't get it. The leap from Taylor Swift to the Beatles is a huge challenge that will require them being exposed to them by young people like yourselves. You cannot appreciate them without musical evolution. The Beatles evolved by exploring everything before them and allowing their art into their consciousness. Big band influences abound in the Beatles music. Thank you for bringing the 4 lads into a modern context. All are better for it. It gives me a warn feeling.

"You've Got to Hide Your Love Away" was basically Lennon trying to write a Bob Dylan song. When he first heard Dylan, he was jealous of the wordplay and style and thought he should have come up with that, as he'd already written a book of surrealist/Lewis Carroll-inspired poetry. So "...HIde Your Love Away" is very much Lennon's "Dylan" song, as its construction and "Hey!" are all Dylan'isms. Lennon admitted as such in an interview once.

Help’s revolves around that giant Ruby looking ring that Ringo is wearing. Wherein some evil James Bond like villains are trying to steal it. The plot is absurd, and fun loving as the Beatles were in that particular time. They built a movie around them, which at the time a movie of them taking a 2 hour nap would have been #1 at the box office. Side note .. the movie was originally going to be called Eight Arms to Hold You With, until John was tasked to come up with a song, which he wrote that night, called, you guessed it Help.

the basic plot of help! was ringo had a ring that belonged to a cult who used it in sacrificial ceremonies. whoever wears the ring must be sacrificed to their god. how ringo got it isn't explained, but because he is wearing it (and can't get it off) he becomes the target of the cultists,. meanwhile the beatles are trying to record new songs, but keep having to fight off the cultists. as some have said the tone of the movie resembled the james bond films of the day.

'Help!' is one of the best examples of a band recovering from a relatively weak album. John also turned what was a personal low point into some great songs (courtesy of Bob Dylan's influence). This album also served as a blueprint for much of the American folk rock scene (the Byrds, the Mamas and the Papas, The Lovin' Spoonful, etc.) The movie is unfortunately not great. It's mainly a disconnected batch of music videos with a thin plot (cashing in on the James Bond craze) tying them together. Also, be aware that the US release is nothing like the UK version. Capitol Records stripped out half the songs and replaced them with orchestral pieces, and then re-used those songs (plus others still in the vaults) to fill out an additional two albums! As greedy as they were, you sort of have to hand it to Capitol for how they fleeced fans in the USA.
