wow ... from 1963! You've also heard "Let It Be" (1970). You notice that the Beatles have developed significantly over time. Two very well-known Beatles songs from the early days (1965) are "Help" and "Yesterday". "A Day In The Life" (1967) and "Here Comes The Sun" (1969) are a little newer then ... but there are so many remarkable Beatles songs and each has its own magic.

"Twist and Shout" is a 1961 song written by Phil Medley and Bert Berns (later credited as "Bert Russell"). It was originally recorded by the Top Notes, but it did not become a hit in the record charts until it was reworked by the Isley Brothers in 1962.

Those girls are screaming because no one had ever seen anything like this before. The Beatles already had enough practice to be as great as they were before arriving in America. They were just too different, cute and talented. They were a mixture of charisma, humor, fantastic live playing, top notch album production, matching suits, long hair, something foreign, they really knew how to write music, etc etc. All of their music had already been heard by all these ladies for a while now, So when the Beatles finally arrived here in America, it was like a cork being released. The girls were already absolutely in love with this band.

With such old Beatles songs I always get a little sentimental ;-) (when the song came out, I was 4; but at least, I was already there). A little later my parents also had a couple of Beatles singles in the music chest. "Nowhere Man", "What Goes On", "Help", "Day Tripper", "Yesterday" ... Nice transition to YES ;-) A super nice old song by Yes is "Survival" (1969). Nobody on the channels has ever heard that before. Don't you want to be the first?

Twist and Shout was originally released by the Isley Brothers, and the Beatles covered it. This performance is from February, 1964, when the Beatles first came to the USA and performed on the Ed Sullivan Show and conquered America... the start of what was called Beatlemania! Right after this show they performed in Washington, DC, and you can find amazing stuff on youtube from the Beatles performing at the Washington Coliseum in 1964
@nthdegree12693 жыл бұрын
Actually The Isley Brothers reworked it. The original release was by the Top Notes. The Isley Brothers version was so much better than the Top Notes version. The song was written by Phil Medley and Bert Berns, sometimes know as Bert Russell. Interestingly Russell co wrote Piece of My Heart which became a hit for Janis Joplin. The Beatles took the Isley Brothers approach. Both are great versions

In February 1964 The Beatles made a series of live American TV appearances for the first time. I watched all of them with my Mom and Dad, brother and sister. The Beatles created a bit of mass hysteria at the time. Their hair was thought to be "girlishly" long by most people back then. One of the reasons the girls scream is when Beatles shake their heads and their hair shakes too. American men typically wore their hair too short to comb, or just barely long enough to comb. When girls started screaming partly due to the Beatles' hair, American boys began growing their hair out. Long hair on men quickly became accepted and has been ever since. Thanks Cynthia for the great reaction. It was as much a joy as the Beatles performance itself.

The Beatles always great this was during their pop music era. That audience reaction was called Beatlemania (yes it is a a real word). And Beatlemania was global. Those girls screaming are now in their 70's or 80's! Can you believe that? Wonder what they think now? The Beatles were a great band they changed their style as they evolved with different instruments and influences. You should review their work from beginning to end then you can understand those styles and impact they had on the whole rock and roll scene. According to Ringo Starr, John Lennon and Paul McCartney could two songs a day from start to finish on vinyl. During the 60's there were always multiple Beatles songs in the top 40 they were massive. You are right you could have heard several Beatles songs when very young. It's great to see the surprise on your face when this song triggered early memories. Always love your reactions and many thanks. Keep exploring and having fun.

The album version, John’s voice was shot and that is what makes the song! He was sucking lozenges and drinking milk. Knowing the demand on his voice, they recorded it last. It was recorded in one take. They tried a second, but John’s voice was gone and for some months after, he felt the effects.

This was the "Third" Version of This Song, The "Original" was done by The Top Notes, then The Isley Brothers, but it was The Beatles Version that was the most successful. This was the Second time the fellows covered an Isley Brothers Song, the first was Shout which has also been covered by The Ronettes, Shangri-Las, Otis Day & The Nights From Animal House and British Pop Singer Lulu. What made The Beatles so popular with The African American Community, was they unlike Elvis Presley in the early days of his Career acknowledged they were heavily influenced by R & B whehter it was Chuck Berry, Little Richard or even Motown. In fact in the early days of their Career with their Album "Meet The Beatles" they cvoered alot of songs by Motown Artists, Money, You Really Got A Hold On Me and Please Mr. Postman. Motown returned the favor when they did an Album called Motown Sings The Beatles where they did their versions of Eleanor Rigby, Yesterday and Let It Be.

The Beatles didn't actually record this first. The top note in 61 and then The Isley Bros. made more famous but for most of us it is a Beatles song. There was Beatlemania when they arrived in the US in 64 and carried over to the rest of their live performances which were very few. The screaming was so loud they couldn't hear themselves while performing so they decided to just create music from their studio and what a great decision that was! Watch their concert at Shea Stadium in 65 and you see what I mean. You know many songs that the Beatles recorded, you just don't realize they made the songs. Over 200 great songs spanning only 7 years. At one time they had the top 5 songs on the charts at the same time in 1964. Over 35 top ten hits and 20 #1 hits. Top selling band of all time. They have been one of the top selling bands since they broke up in 1970 even today!
@nthdegree12693 жыл бұрын
The Top Notes didn't write it though. It was Phil Medley and Burt Berns. The Isley Brothers fixed it so that it had that familiar sound, they made it their own, as the Top Notes version wasn't that great.

Growing up, the young eventual Beatles had access to Black American R&B, Soul & early R&R. This was a huge influence on them & they translated the glorious styles from the records they studied & of course made them into Beatles songs. Roll Over Beethoven & Long Tall Sally are another pair of great covers by the Beatles of great American talents (Chuck Berry & co-writer Little Richard respectively). There was a colour barrier in America then so that it was difficult for white kids to listen to rock & roll and other "race music." The Beatles wanted all styles - just so it was great! They also spent months at a time as a house band for clubs in Hamburg, Germany, which made the Beatles probably the best combo in Britain. The Beatles, by the way, did what they could to break the so-called colour barrier. Their first big tour of America & Canada included playing in cities that would only allow white audiences. The Beatles flat out refused to play at any racist venue. Needless to say, the Beatles won. Thoughtful young men.

The Beatles weren't really all that original in their early years. But, they were in the right place, at the right time. Don't get me wrong, I've always loved these guys. But they did 'borrow' quite a bit from others. But like I said right place, right time. That said. Their impact, and try to imagine, there was no internet, nor cable TV at this time. so if something showed, like The Ed Sullivan show, which was at the time the biggest show on earth. This impact was far beyond anything before it at the time. Peeps lost their minds on this at the time. But they also wrote tons after this that imho was a lot of gold there. But their first intro to America, was something special. I honestly don't think it could be duplicated. If you get the chance, react to 'Help" IMHO one of their best ever.

Many people think The Beatles wrote their early hit, “Twist and Shout.” But in fact, Bert Berns wrote the song, which was based on “La Bamba,” a Mexican folk tune. Even The Beatles thought that The Isley Brothers (who recorded it before them) had written it.

It’s hard to believe in today’s context but you have no idea how captivating these guys were for girls back then, the sexual component especially. The US was a country still reeling from the assassination of JFK 3 months earlier and gone was the promise of a bright, young, vibrant president and the golden age the world believed he would bring us. Then come these 4 good-looking boys with long hair, wearing rather tight suits with skinny ties and Cuban boots, playing raunchy rock that hadn’t been heard on the radio for several years. It gave America’s youth hope and energy again. Seeing The Beatles provoked an animalistic, sexualized response, hence the screaming.
