@@jamesbrice6619 No, it isn't unless you want to run with the pack of Beatles memes, blogs, etc. for the past 30 years, all declaring Revolver their best album. It just isn't, not technically, not artistically, not even aesthetically. Revolver has only a couple of truly high points (She Said, She Said, and Got To Get You Into My Life) and even then only in the original mono on vinyl.

Definitely good choices as far as the list goes. For me it's; 1.) Revolver - first Beatles album i ever listened to when i was 10, found it in a bunch of my uncle's old CD's in my grandparent's basement along with a lot of other stuff I listen to to this day. 2/3.) White Album/Rubber Soul - Can't really decide, here lately i've really been getting into the heavy/raw aspects of the White Album but at the same time Rubber Soul was basically the playlist to like my first 10 times getting stoned so it means a lot to me as well. Love both though, my preference between the two varies damn near day by day depending on my mood, what I'm doing, etc.In My Life will always be my favorite Beatles song/song in general though because that's mine and my wife's song and the one we chose to play at our wedding. 4/5) Sgt Pepper/Magical Mystery Tour - Hands down prefer Pepper over MMT but the songs on MMT that were recorded/released as singles during the Pepper era/sessions (Strawberry Fields, Penny Lane, I am The Walrus, even Blue Jay Way even tho most people tend to not like it). Basically I feel like Pepper should've been released with Strawberry Fields Forever on it plus maybe Penny Lane (not saying its a bad song, just never been a huge fan of that one - definitely prefer more Lennon/Harrison stuff that i do McCartney although he's got a lot of songs i love as well), I am The Walrus, possibly Blue Jay Way. Pepper could've made a nice double album with those songs plus what's already on it with the addition of maybe 1-2 more songs (possibly a George song?) if it were sequenced the right way, even if the songs didn't "fit together" (only like 4 songs on Pepper do anyways, the first 2 and last 2), of course still ending with A Day in The Life because that's hands down the best album closer I can think of, I think it'd be even more perfect than it already is. Would've loved it if the Beatles just kinda kept doing mostly psychedelic stuff for a few years longer than they did

i love your comment , very insightful anecdotes into your personal experience with the Beatle's discography. Sgt Pepper definitely should have been released with Strawberry Fields Forever and Penny Lane, they fit extremely thematically well with the theme of the record. MMT is still a fantastic record, but I find their first three albums so so so charming that I had to put them above MMT.

Ya did good with ending on Rubber Soul ... You didn't mention Nowhere Man and the 45 between Rubber Soul and Revolver - Rain, that are underrated songs, along with Hey Bulldog the only real gem off of Yellow Submarine. Magical Mystery tour is not a real album but an EP for the movie that Capital beefed up with 3 great 45's of that time ... maybe to make up for how they (Capital Records) butchered all the previous albums ... making it difficult to experience their musical development through their albums. - Matt

Okay if Yellow Submarine was only an EP with its 4 original songs, it'd STILL be above their first two albums and Beatles For Sale. Skimming over It's All Too Much & It's Only A Northern Song and just calling them "two George Harrison songs" like they aren't MASTERPIECE magnum opuses deserving of hours of venerative reflection is CRIMINAL.

“Beatles For Sale” … a skip in the record? It's easy to put “Beatles for Sale” routinely as the second worst album … It was certainly a marked departure from the upbeat tone that had characterized the Beatles' previous work. And yes it is so that every ones taste is different. Yet, a little context here wouldn't hurt. The band was exhausted after a series of world tours that had established them as a worldwide phenomenon in 1964. And speaking of exhaustion, the songs for “A Hard Days Night” album (which it was) were going to be all 14 tracks written by them during their French and American tours … so they could do the movie. In this time period they also did 4 American covers, two in March and two in June. Now, they are going back into the studio two months after finishing “A Hard Day's Night” to make “Beatles For Sale.” Yikes!! They got to be feeling pretty bankrupt. With their backs to the wall, The Beatles tapped into their Hamburg and Liverpool repertoires to complete “Beatles For Sale. 6 of the 14 tracks were covers. Yes, John is dark on No Reply, I'm A Loser, Baby's In Black and I Don't Want To Spoil The Party. With “No Reply,” John's recorded voice is a dramatic and intense melody line. With “I'm A Loser,” John is certainly a good rhymer. His alternating up and down melody on the verses becomes a bit much after a while. Like always, his chorus line with Paul harmonizing above and the rolling bass below, is a blow away WOW! By the time of making album #4, “Beatles for Sale,” the Beatles had a lot of nice songs to pick from, on a 45 minute 11-12 songs performance tour. It is interesting to note that after Baby's In Black recording (August 11, 1964, the first one for the Album), every Beatles tour from Christmas of 1964 up until their last world tour in the summer of 1966, had Baby's in Black on the list of songs to perform. Don't ask why, cause I don't really know. But John and Paul did a nice job with the melody and harmony. Paul up on top during the chorus is like he does in I'll Get You ...”I've imagined I'm In love with you” puts me in heaven, while John sounds like “I'm So Tired” yet to be recorded 4 years later. “I Don't Want To Spoil The Party” is a nice folk rocker with a nice lead by George, and Ringo on the bottom during the chorus beating out a low syncopation beat. “I'll follow The Sun” is a melancholy beautiful tune by Paul. It's what Paul does best over and over again. Don't forget “I Will” to be 4 years later. On the bright side, I wonder how many times John did that opening on “Mr Moon Light” until he got it to his satisfaction? “Eight Day's A Week;” I'm biased here. This song was the hand clapping hook that brought my attention to them. “Every Little Thing” is a light rocker that can hold you all the way through. Look “What You're Doing;” again, Paul has a great full melody sound with that voice that rises … to the occasion! It's not for sure if the piano is Paul or George Martin. But it is simple enough to be Paul's at that time of his piano skills and reminiscent enough of “Good Day Sunshine,” yet to be two years later. The 45 recorded at that time was I Feel Fine / She's A Woman. A double A 45. The EMI listing of songs released the album on December 4, 1964. This is how amazing these guys are ... up against the wall … Is this album a skip in the record? A little short on original material, but not a skip. - Matt

Abbey Road is my number 1, and basically flawless in my eyes. Come Together and Something have to be the best opening 2 songs on an album ever. I think I’m in the minority that loves Maxwell’s Silver Hammer. And I mean LOVE love it. If you could consider it a guilty pleasure song, then it’s my number 1 guilty pleasure. It just works perfectly for me. And the great songs never stop coming. The only song I’m kinda meh on is Mean Mr Mustard, but who cares. Perfect album.

Let it Be is underrated. And all the pieces were there for it to be an all timer. Cut off the fat, add Don’t Let Me Down (had no good reason not to be on the album), and if they could’ve finished their own version of All Things Must Pass this would’ve been one of their best albums. Yeah the producing has an identity crisis but it doesn’t stop me from liking the songs. And despite what some people say, I still think the album version of the long and winding road is the best. Btw there is an awesome fairly high quality Beatles version of All Things Must Pass here: kzbin.info/www/bejne/rnirnZ1mftCpebssi=EogW78UjZJX_VZza

I've been collecting Beatles albums since the 80's. Rubber Soul was my first album - purchased on a family vacation, in London, at Tower Records (I think we went there from the Picadilly Circus train stop). Rubber Soul is a reasonable number 1. White Album is a compilation, as you say - but it's beautiful and sad because it marks the first album where the Beatles mostly didn't work together at all - they went off to visit the Maharishi and each did their own thing, and the crazy breadth of styles is a result of... no collaboration or synergy. Instead they showcased their own strengths. Again, beautiful and sad. I'd have ranked Revolver higher - I really think it's the #1 on my list, but could see it as #2 or 3 on other lists. I agree with your choices generally. Other video ideas... you mention 'canon' - a term I find very frustrating. The Beatles albums, generally in the UK formats, and generally in Stereo today, are basically canon, I guess. But they were a product of their times. Parlophone and VeeJay and Capitol did not have agreements to make make albums with the same songs, resulting in some 'different' album choices that were the known standard until the 80's when the CD's reissued the songs in the UK (stereo) formats. There's a couple problems with that - what about the US albums? They were not all just diminutives of the UK albums - sometimes they included singles that were never on any UK album. The Beatles albums come from an era where singles did not have to be on albums, and could instead stand on their own. In some countries there were further alternate takes on albums - even different language recordings. So... what about those singles? What about those other takes? Also - what about the stereo vs mono mixes? Some are quite different - even coming from different takes of the same songs? And what about bootlegs? There are some very good ones. The Beatles recorded a lot of good material - not just canon.

white album does indeed start the branch into individualized paul john george and ringo moreso than “the Beatles,” but this is also partly the reason why i put abbey road so high; their genuine final effort was a coming together (hahaha) before their agreeable end. revolver is fantastic, but i personally cant see myself putting it over sgt pepper or self titled, the latter i see as a more realized version of itself. i was thinking of talking about american releases of the albums as well, but i feel that would have convoluted my initial talking points of each album, and made the video much more confusingly hard to follow, hence the omition

Ranking Beatles albums is not as straightforward as it seems. I understand your choices, but I would put MMT higher and White album lower with Rev at 1. Abbey Road is a bit over-rated imho - side 2, although very well executed, sounds like a buch of incomplete tunes thrown together because the show was over. The biggest problem with album ranking is that it ignores the singles - and the Beatles had lots of awesome non-album songs. Today of course we can 'tweak' the albums to suit our own preferences with playlists. I generally take out the few songs I don't like (Mr Moonlight, Rev 9, etc) and add singles from the relevant era (Day Tripper to R Soul, Rain to Rev, I'm Down to Help, etc). The biggest change I make is to the 67-69 era. Penny Lane and Strawberry Fields get added to Pepper where they were originally meant to be, Y Sub album gets junked and the 'new' tracks added to MMT, along with the WWF version of Across The Universe. White album I get rid of the stuff I don't like and add Hey Jude etc. The Get Back / Let It Be album becomes a blend of Spector/Giles Martin/Glyn Johns/Naked mixes according to which one I prefer of each song.
@MrMcDudeSir
@MrMcDudeSir 4 ай бұрын
These edits to their discography all make sense; the Beatles had amazing singles that were omitted from their albums for a reason I'm not sure of. There are even American versions of their albums that change songs and their placement, which can ultimately change their placement in the ranking. Side 2 of Abbey Road is incredibly well executed, and it is indeed a bunch of incomplete songs thrown together, but its an absolutely epic rhapsody that is extremely strong; the "weakest" songs on the medley (Mean Mr. Mustard, Polythene Pam) are less than 2 minutes long anyway.
@AshleyReynolds-vc6ly
@AshleyReynolds-vc6ly 4 ай бұрын
@@MrMcDudeSirDon't get me wrong, I like the medley and Abby Rd is still a good album, but bc the medley was leftovers swept up from the floor it reduces the albums overall status imho. Mustard and Pam were easy to edit out of my playlist (had to create a new digital file to do it though, but that's ok, streaming sucks, I'd rather own the tracks than rent them). Singles were generally left off the albums, esp if they were released in advance of the album, bc the Beatles didn't want their fans to buy a song twice. There were exceptions to that practice however. The US albums were a mess, designed to make money. By having 11 tracks per album instead of 14 and adding singles they could get 3 albums out of 2 and get more sales. But the songs were all over the place, a US album could have tracks from 3 different UK albums. Interestingly, it was the US corruption of Rubber Soul that inspired Brian Wilson to create Pet Sounds.

@@jamesbrice6619 James, there is "best," and then there is _favorite._ Revolver may well be.your favorite Beatles album, and who would I be to dispute you? But "best" is a more objective term that, for the sake of comparison to other Beatles albums, requires some clear definitions. I look at several criteria for an album: quality of recording, quality of performance, consistent quality of material, quality of editing & production continuity, and quality of packaging. To me, Revolver scores quite low on most of these points, especially quality of material: I just don't like most of the songs on this album. Leaves me cold, and always did. It doesn't even sound like an album, more like a compilation of disparate tracks. No continuity; in that regard, a precursor to the white album.

@BigBri550 It is rare but I see Revolver as both my favorite and their best. It is an album of transition, with McCartney, strongly using Martin's guidance, to pioneer into new techniques and sounds. John was progressing, but still mainly stuck to the old 4 man rock band format. I also think it contains an equal amount of melodic input from both John and Paul, with George coming into his own and misfiring only with I Want to Tell You. Melody wise, i dont think it can be beat. The way you describe Revolver is the way I feel about Rubber Soul...left me cold.
