The famous abbey of Chiaravalle has two bell towers, one of which is the famous tower at the centre of the church, while in this video the five bells that ring for celebrations with the faithful are the protagonists. The tower built by architect Francesco Pecorari in 1330 houses the oldest bell in Milan, cast by a craftsman in 1453, while the bell tower on the façade has five of the most beautiful bells in Italy. The five bells still ring using the ropes that reach the base and announce the celebrations, as in this video. The five bells are tuned in the diatonic scale of D major and were cast in 1907 by Giorgio Pruneri, replacing three bells from the 1700s.
The monastery was created on 22 January 1135 at the express wish of St Bernard, who had recently refused an invitation to remain as archbishop of Milan. The famous Grana Padano cheese was born in this abbey in 1135. The first temporary buildings were replaced by the central church, completed in 1221. Among the many works of art, the walnut choir in the nave, carved by Carlo Garavaglia in 1645, stands out. The history of the abbey continued quietly until the invasion of the French, who drove the monks out of the complex in 1798 and demolished a large part of the monastery, which had a cloister made by Bramante himself. The monks did not return until 1952, thanks to the intervention of Cardinal Alfredo Ildefonso Schuster.
