Slight shame she sung the radio lyrics ("have me" rather than "fuck me" and "Sandra Bullocks" rather than "hairy bollocks") despite this going out after 9pm.

You really notice what a key part he is to this group in this special. I used to think that Paul just brought him along from the Housemartins out of friendship or something. Now you see that he has an important place in the South.

I took the wawa in her voice for a soundcard-malfunction - until Dave started singing and sounded normal. She might fit into a country band but not here.

She was too prudish to sing the proper lyric (the band themselves state that in the behind the scenes footage on the VHS tape release of this concert), thus changing the whole meaning of the song.

I kind of get the references people are making to Iris DeMent sounding a bit goatish, but instead of hating it like others do I'm wondering how that unique sound is happening. It sounds like there might be some echo on her microphone to create the effect, but if that's her natural voice it's one I want to hear more of. I've never heard a voice like it
@desperatemohammedantheworl58334 жыл бұрын
It's the fact she changed the words, those missing the whole point of the lyric, that pisses me off.
@hankyknot12 жыл бұрын
Iris Dement, this was not your finest hour, reminded me of Madonna at Live Aid, the phrase "couldn't carry a tune in a bucket" leaps to mind. I don't know her but I'm guessing she either A never heard the song before, or B this is way off her usual style

Unbelievers/sceptics/fence-sitters - please please listen to Iris D's repertoire - Sing The Delta is strongest album in terms of consistency and sincerity since Dylan's masterpiece Blood On The Tracks, and lovely to see the mutual respect between Iris and The Beautiful South

Wow, what an ill-informed bunch of so-called music fans on here....I kinda wonder if many of them had never even heard of Iris DeMent before this performance. Catch her rendition of Everlasting Arms, an 1867-written hymnal, used in the closing credits of the True Grit remake a few years back...."haunting and lyrical" doesn't come close. This song was perfect for her unique style.....using the argument made on here by a few people, one assumes they think Amy Winehouse 'killed' a few classic tracks too.....
@eekowarrior10 жыл бұрын
Hi Lee - just caught your defence of Iris D singing with Beautiful South. Great comparison with Winehouse. 2 colossal interpretative vocalists, who mean every note and give something with every breath and vocal nuance. So what if it's not X factor auto tuned bland smoothness ?
@MegaVector201110 жыл бұрын
eekowarrior No. I'm really sorry, and I know music is subjective....but she does sound like a goat. And you can't get away from that reference, terrible...and a taint on this performance.
@desperatemohammedantheworl58334 жыл бұрын
Yes Lee, how dare people comment on the terrible performance at hand without already having a working knowledge of the last 30 years of americana/folk/country music. Tool.
